It’s a very wise comment. People need to chill. Why spend life angry and worrying about what others are doing that doesn’t affect you? Of course, some people are filling their pockets by making people angry.

Plenty to be angry about. Anxieties from Climate Change and how fucked we are. The fact that the working class is struggling. Over 60% of Americans live pay check to pay check. Everything goes up in price besides are wages and salaries. Predatory private healthcare and the State actively passing hostile legislation against trans people. The SC controlling women's bodies. It just keeps getting worse for soooo many people. Besides the rich, they've never been richer...

It's a party house. They were kind of a staple in the 80s-90s especially in GA where the band is from. The "tin roof rusted" thing some people say means pregnant. But in band interviews they say: "It was just part of a description of the vision in my head of what the love shack looked like. There's a place outside of Athens, Georgia that closed. It was an old building with a metal roof that had aged and was rusted. I was using that image when we were jamming. All of a sudden we're singing to the tape and it ran out. I just kept going because I was so into it and said "tin roof, rusted" and they thought it was funny and a good way to end it. It was just a vision in my head of my love shack."

I always thought the "tin roof rusted" meant you had achieved the perfect peak of your buzz for the evening, but I have had people tell me it does indeed mean an unplanned pregnancy in Georgia. I have read that the "love shack" that specifically inspired this song was decorated liberally with glitter, and that people had actually gone to the trouble to paint "glitter on the highway" so people driving in wouldn't miss the exit, as the turnoff was from some little farm to market road onto a dirt road...

@@jonathanlocke6404 Oh there were 'love shacks' all over GA during that time. I remember partying at a house way back on Christmas tree farm, another was barn, another was an abandoned house down a gravel road...Anywhere you could escape the adults to party & not risk drawing the cops, basically 😂

Yep pretty sure that’s spot on! Have also been told that tin roof rusted is in reference to pregnancy. Think it was way back in the day when I was a kid and the song came out that I pondered the same meaning and asked my parents or something haha.

"Division"'s not the problem. Bigotry is. And if you're not divided from bigots and morons, you should be real fuckin' worried about why. Love is great. But love starts with respect. And respect starts with respecting people's right to exist. It's really not a lot to ask. The B-52s were always an overtly political group, especially around AIDS, environmental, and animal-rights causes. Ricky Wilson, Cindy's older brother and the source of the unique guitar stylings of the band, was gay in the American South in a time when even "tolerance" was a long way off. He died of AIDS in 1985 at age 32, when Ronald Reagan and American conservatives were refusing to even acknowledge the epidemic, let alone do anything to assist (or even simply stop abusing) the people suffering from it, because conservatives felt those people deserved death and suffering for daring to defy what conservatives felt entitled to order them to do (sound familiar?). The B-52s are about love. But not comfortable, "don't offend anyone" faux "love". Instead, it's "be yourself, let your freak flag fly, and anyone who can't fucking deal with that is not welcome" love. Love is, first and foremost, a dedication to defend what you hold dear. It is never a passive act, and it cannot and should not co-exist with stupid hate.

@@michaelccozens - regarding bigotry I agree there is only right and wrong. No space for devision. I would however warn against making blanket statements regarding Regan and conservatives. That can breed devision. My dad always used the quote “the broader the statement the narrower the mind.” If you do a little research on Regan’s reaction to the aid’s epidemic, you’ll find much of it to be untrue and fanatical. The whole “Regan refused to commit resources” to helping aids victims loses a lot of steam when you look at the actual records. They say Regan never mentioned aids for the first seven years of his presidency. While it’s is easy to disprove, the narrative finds a foothold and grows from there. Regan, in working with democrats agreed when they asked for more money to go towards fighting aids. He increased the funding trifold in ‘83 and the number doubled every year of his presidency. In 1978, two years before he became president he publicly opposed Proposition 6 which was policy aimed at barring gays and lesbians (which Regan had many friends who were gay that he made when he was in Hollywood) from teaching. The bill was gaining serious traction until he spoke out against it at which point it lost handily. He listened to his republican friends that were gay and friends who were gay that were democrats. He never spoke with disdain about people with aids. But it’s easy to believe he was a horrible person when you only listen to those who paint that picture. And I didn’t even vote for him! I was a democrat then and eventually an independent. Of course he could’ve done more, perhaps much more, but sometimes it’s like damn, this isn’t right.

@@michaelccozens the AIDS epidemic when Fraudci said people could get it from cereal boxes and Neil Young said he didn’t want f*got grocery clerks to handle his groceries? Should we say ALL Democrats are bigots and homophobes bc those two liberals/Democrats made those homophobic comments during that time? We can play this game ALLLLLL day. You’re the one causing division. You are the part of the problem when you demonize and generalize about a group of people.

Love Shack is off of one of the B-52s most commercially successful albums called Cosmic Thing. I'm not sure why it was saying 79. The album was released in 89. The band has been around since the late 70s tho. Their earlier stuff is much more quirky, some would say weird, but the Bs have always been just a happy go lucky bunch. Excellent musicians disguised as one of the greatest party bands that ever existed. Not only were people getting down to this in the clubs (it was a massive hit) but a B-52s concert felt like thousands of people showing up at the love shack for a party. I lost count how many times I've seen these guys live and you always leave a show sweaty, exhausted and smiling. You can't help but smile when you listen to them. Also, those girls can sang. They have got some of the most beautiful and unique harmonies in their songs. Long list if hits and deep cuts to check out with these guys. Roam, Channel Z, Give Me Back My Man, Legal Tender, Private Idaho just to name a few.

Work during the week! When I was young it was all about going to the Drive In as a family with your friends neighbors all meeting up sitting in the back of my Dad's truck at a Drive-In Movie! into my teens going with my besties and low key following the cute boys and giggling! Playing Arcade Games in the mall! But when I got older in the 80's it was party party party to Ac/Dc Led Zep Motley Poison Van Halen Metallica -------- Going to all the the concerts! The band is from Athens, GA, home to the University of Georgia where they were students when the band was formed. Also from this little college town: R.E.M., Widespread Panic, Drive-by Truckers, of Montreal, Neutral Milk Hotel, Azure Ray, Pylon, the Glands, Vigilantes of Love, Vic Chesnutt, Reptar, Apples in Stereo, Olivia Tremor Control, Dead Confederate, John Barry, Ravenstone, Danger Mouse, Love Tractor, and so many more. Just an amazing little town that The NY Times said is the birthplace of indie music.

She said there were all types of people there, black, white, Asian, Hispanic, gay, kids her age, older folks. Everybody dancing, socializing and just having fun. This song was a late 80's song. I remember it well, and it went with the times of partying with the friends group. It was a MEGA hit song. The 80's were such a better time. For two hours every Friday night and Saturday about dinner time your phone rang off the hook--everyone making plans and where the party is. If you were hungover and slept through your calls you were screwed and had to drive the normal spots and hope to run into people. Word of mouth was EVERYTHING. No internet and no cell phones and yet we all managed to find each other every weekend. Good times.

And from what I understand of the story, she had once been in a bar somewhere in Hawaii, that had a rusty tin room, so she just shouted that out loud in the song..

Hell yeah, the parties were a blast! Having fun, getting along. But it’s not like everyone was welcome at every party. We all partied with our own crowds (as people have always done). I was young and enjoying life. But that doesn’t mean the 80s were a decade of peace, love and understanding. Things are bad out there right now. But we’re really being unfair to today’s young people when we act like life was idyllic when we were young. As I recall, our parents and grandparents told us in the 80s that the world had gone to hell in a hand basket since they were young. 🤔 In the words of Billy Joel: Begin, Reagan, Palestine, terror on the airline Ayatollah's in Iran, Russians in Afghanistan "Wheel of Fortune", Sally Ride, heavy metal suicide Foreign debts, homeless vets, AIDS, crack, Bernie Goetz Hypodermics on the shore, China's under martial law Rock and roller, cola wars, I can't take it anymore.

@@vaskylark Clearly you didn't suffer anything in the 80's as a straight white person so please...The only people you should feel sorry for are the ones who you called disgusting names at & put others down for what they couldn't change and let others do the same. The 80's weren't as special as you like to claim with some of you other rose colored eye glass wearing fools. The 80's were literally about excess and ME ME ME and plagued with homophobia and racism ESPECIALLY with AIDS being a plague and the cold war feeling never ending.. Of course you wouldn't know that and everyone else who thinks the same. You all also think like every other generation that your generation is better than the newer ones. It wasn't and isn't unless you were a straight white male / female in your case so don't dare push any of that aside. I and many others lived through it too. Many people had it good & easy, just as many didn't. Like in Sydney, Australia, gay men were thrown off of cliffs by gangs and so called "straight" men because they thought it was fun and was "doing everyone a favour by getting rid of those Fags". Every day people on TV would admit to happily kill a gay man if they found one and were called pedophiles in the process. That is just ONE example of your "better in the 80's than now" preciousness. There are many many more examples we can give of the not-so-better decade called the 80's. The only bright spot? Music. A safe space for many people.

I dunno why the video you selected of this said '79,but in reality this song 100% dropped in 1989. 1979 I was still in HS (sophomore year) and their hit at that time would have been Rock Lobster. Me and my GF at the time in '89 and a couple friends were together when the Cosmic Thing album dropped and I bought the cassette and we went out for a cruise in the country with some good bud. The first single,Channel Z we had already heard. But when this song came on,we all looked at each other and were in agreement...this is gonna be a MASSIVE hit. And it was, elevated the B-52's into a whole new stratosphere. Was a monster song that was everywhere that year. Crossed all lines by race, gender and genre, everyone was digging it.

I'm 70 now, still want to get up and dance when I hear this. Wish my body could still move like back then. I often thought when all the riots were going on that someone should start playing music really really loud, drown out all that anger, get people moving to a different happier vibe.

It was released on June 20, 1989 - not in 1979. It was a song that seemed to bridge the end of the 80’s with the beginning of the 90’s - similarly to the Knack’s “My Sharona” bridged the late 70’s and the early 80’s, having been released in the summer of 1979.

I'm Australian, so I'm not 100% sure. From what I have read, and it was an improvised line from the female. "But Tin Roof Rusted" comes from the Texas area of the USA, meaning the condom has broken(I could be pregnant). Saw them live a few times, such a great band. I'm not the best dancer in the world, but when this came on. I got up and danced my ass off(and didn't care what anyone thought)
