My opinion, but this is one of the best musical performances of the rock era.

Levon Helm of The Band sang the first verse. Mavis Staples sang the second verse. Pops Staples sang the third verse. Rick Danko of The Band sang the fourth verse. Everybody sang the fifth verse. This was just a live performance of the song when The Band invited The Staples to join this. The Band had three lead singers -- Danko, Helm, and Richard Manuel. Next should be Makes No Difference, also The Last Waltz version.

The Band started out backing Ronnie Hawkins and then Bob Dylan. They had a successful career on their own. All the members take turns singing lead vocals and sometimes swap instruments. The drummer is the great Levon Helm. The Staple Singers are a gospel group. It is Pops Staples and his daughters. That was Mavis Staples singing the lead vocals. She also has a solo career. Two other great songs from The Band to check out are The night they drove ol' dixie down and Up on cripple creek.

The Last Waltz was a concert by the Canadian-American rock group The Band, held on American Thanksgiving Day, November 25, 1976, at Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco. The Last Waltz was advertised as The Band's "farewell concert appearance", and the concert had The Band joined by more than a dozen special guests. The concert was produced and managed by Bill Graham and was filmed by director Martin Scorsese, who made it into a documentary of the same title, released in 1978. The Last Waltz is hailed as one of the greatest documentary concert films ever made. In 2019, the film was selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the United States National Film Registry for being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".

That is Mavis Staple - probably the most underrated female artist ever!!! She is amazing!!!

This performance is very emotional because I can sense that every member put their heart into this performance. This song is just oozing with "heart". The Staple Singers are R&B royalty and Mavis Staples is a Soul queen. Pops, who sang here along with her sisters Cleotha and Yvonne, is her father. I have loved Mavis Staples since I was around 6 years old. I grew up in an R&B environment and remember "I'll Take You There" as one of my favorite songs. I didn't really know what the song was about at that age but it was her voice that grabbed my attention. I distinctly remember the way I would run to the radio when I heard the opening riff to that song and to turn the volume up so I could dance with it. Mavis' voice was incredibly soothing and, even at 6 years old, took hold of my imagination. Gladys Knight was the only other singer whose voice electrified me in the same way when I was young. "I'll Take You There" is on my Soundtrack of my Life playlist (along w Gladys Knight & The Pips 'I've Got To Use My Imagination') as a song that indelibly marked my life and has not lost its potency over time.

You should also listen to the "Playing for Change" version of the song - celebrating the 50th anniversary of the song.

If this song does not affect you, you have no soul. One of the best performances ever. It's over 40 years old, and if we haven't learned anything since, that's on us. It is truly a blessing.

Her name is Mavis Staples. She, her dad Roebuck (Pops), and her two sisters were a gospel group known as The Staple Singers. They were the electric band who played behind Bob Dylan when he almost set off a riot playing "folk music" in such a manner. Dylan and they parted company and they decided to go on to see what happens. They were simply referred to as Dylan and the band while backing him and it kind of stuck so they decided, with a collective shrug of their shoulders, to run with it and were known as The Band until the end of their run

This is The Band and The Staple Singers. The drummer is the great, late Levon Helm.

The drummer's name is Levon Helm. I never saw The Band live but I did see Levon Helm and The RCO All-Stars in 1977. The other musicians in the band were Fred Carter Jr., Steve Cropper, Dr. John and Donald Duck Dunn. All excellent in their own right. I am disappointed I never saw The Staples Singers. Mavis has an incredible voice in the midst of other great voices. So many great bands from that era and by the miracle of film and video we can all see them today. It's definitely something to celebrate!

I'm in my 70's. What a lot of people don't factor in with this collaboration is the time it was produced. In the middle of the hippie revolution. Where we wanted to do exactly what we wanted, to love and include everyone. Music was a very innocuous way to make a LOUD political statement. I marched with my black brothers and sisters, I marched and participated in sit in's, chaining ourselves to statues and buildings to protest our involvement in Vietnam. This was a beautiful song, expertly performed and a huge FU to all the racists. I never changed, the world changed around me. New subscriber here..

I was watching this on my big screen Tv, which does not allow for comments, so I got on my computer so that I could react. Thanks for this reaction to one of my favorite songs by one of my favorite bands. In this performance during the film "The Last Waltz", The Band was joined on stage by The Staples (or The Staples Singers). The lead singer and drummer for The Band is the late great Levon Helms and the other member who sang is Rick Danko. Mavis Staples is that phenomenal voice on the second verse and "Pa" Staples on the third. I saw this film when it came out in 1978 and then I had to go buy the album. This celebration of their final concert had so many guest performers that it would be hard to list them all, but it contained Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, and Dr. John. If you want to react to another of their songs, might I suggest "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down?" For The Staples, try "I'll Take You There." Oh, the original of the song did feature both Levon and Rick singing. Keep it up friend.

I wasn’t at the actual concert but did see it at the movie theater, geez, probably 1978. I was young then! Phenomenal. The Last Waltz is a must see.

The singing drummer is Levon Helm from Turkey Scratch, Arkansas. He played with Ronnie Hawkins. Listen to his album Arkansas Rock Pile. He was an early Rockabilly proponent. Helm was also an actor. He played the old guy the movie Shootee that Mark Wahlburg goes to see for information. He led quite a life.

Robbie got inspiration from "The Staple Singers" for the Harmony singing arrangement they the Negro singers, that's a rabbit hole within itself,& all the Artists that appear on the stage are friends of the Band & showed up with less than 8 weeks notice & was vidiographed by a man named Laslo among others & he was the only one capture the majority of Muddy's performance( others were on a bathroom/food break,he went on to work with Director Walter Hill on " The Warriors" yet another rabbit hole, the 'Waltz was directed by Martin Scorsese

Yes, the original recording did alternate vocals between Levon Helm, the drummer with one verse taken by Rick Danko, the base player. They all came together on the last verse. From the same concert The Last Waltz, please check out “It Makes No Difference” and Ophelia to see them in action.

Levon Helms is the singing drummer from The Band. The Staples Singers in this performance are sisters and their father, "Pops" Staples on guitar and vocals, and three of his daughters. Mavis Staples who sang her solo part so powerfully is alive and still performing and even making albums. I think she is in her eighties now. She is greatly admired by many other singers from all different genres. Check out their group's music and her solo work. I won't go into The Band's history here, but it's worth checking out. Some of my favorites from them are "It Makes No Difference" , "I Shall Be Released", " The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" and of course "The Weight". Besides the original version of " The Weight" and this amazing collaboration, you should definitely watch the version by an organization called Playing For Change. They piece together singers and instrumentalists from all over country and all over the world. It blows me away. On this song, Robbie Robertson from The Band starts out and Ringo Starr is on drums, then you start your musical journey. Amazingly beautiful. One of the singers is a son of Willie Nelson. The organization has many more songs they cover. It's so cool to hear all the different instruments and voices.

What makes this performance enjoyable is that it's faithful to the original while adding The Staples vocals. The original was recorded in the basement of their pink house in Woodstock, New York...A year before the festival. Connection??? The album is Music From Big Pink, a fantastic album

I got to see Mavis Staples live about five years ago. Bucket list show. She's still touring, so if you get a chance to see her take it. She's about 85 years old, so there won't be many more chances.

The Band had 3 strong lead singers: Richard Manuel, Levon Helms, and Rick Danko. In the original recording of The Weight, Helms (drums) sang the lead in all verses except verse 4 (Crazy Chester...) where Danko (bass) sang lead. Another person who often sang lead was Richard Manuel (piano). Listen to his singing in "I Shall be Released" or "Whispering Pines"

Levon Helm the Band’s drummer and one of their lead singers was also an actor and all around really interesting man. He released some solo albums late in his career and passed away in 2012. He played the back woods firearms expert in the Mark Wahlberg movie Shooter. He was in The Right Stuff and Coal Miners Daughter among other films and TV shows.

Just about any version of this song is great, but this is definitely one of the best. Another favorite version of mine that you might want to check is 2012 Playing for Change. Look for Robbie Robertson & Ringo Starr, The Weight. You definitely WON'T be disappointed with that one either. Great reaction by the way. I love seeing people discovering the music of my time.

The Last Waltz was the final concert performance and celebration of The Band in 1976 at the Winterland Auditorium, San Francisco, the place where they first performed as The Band. It was filmed by Martin Scorsese and the concert feature Many guest artists that inspired The Band during their career. This one with The Staple Singers was filmed in a sound studio as were a couple other guest features in the film but most were actual concert footage. The Band is a true Americana icon all from Canada except for the drummer who is from the US south, their history is worth diving into and the film The Last Waltz is a must for any American music historian/lover. I saw the, live in 1993. I’ve seen hundreds of concert, and this one is in my top 5 shows I attended along with Stevie Ray Vaughan in 1989 and 1983.

The Staples are a legendary gospel-singing family, the Band a legendary group of multi-instrumentalists that, yes, can all sing. Well, except for Garth Hudson. Read up on them and listen to more!

Craziest thing may be that the best singer in The Band (subject to argument!) didn't even sing a verse in this. Richard Manuel, the piano player, is one of the most soulful singers to me. he's been called the "white Ray Charles" for reason. But the Band had three absolutely incredible singers: drummer Levon Helm, bassist Rick Danko and Manuel. In the original recording, drummer Levin Helm sang the first three verses, bassist Rick Danko sang the fourth verse, and they both sang the final verse. Oddly, the member considered by the Band themselves to be the lead singer didn't sing lead on "the weight". Richard Manuel, normally the Band's pianist, can be seen in this video playing organ.

Martin Scorsese, Director of the Godfather movies, is the genius behind this film.

Incredible video!! I guess everyone can sing! You should che k out "Rare Earth" the song is "Get Ready" drummer lead singer too! I'm a singing drummer myself. It was purely accidental. On our very first gig, the lead singer was a no-show, so the show must go on, right? I fixed up an extension for the mike stand and history was made! Come to find out i was a much better singer than Greg our former lead singer. Thank God he didn't play bass or lead guitar. React to "Rare Earth" the song " Get Ready" the drummer is the singer! The Band had three lead singers, the guy playing the double neck guitar is Robbie Robertson, he wrote most of the songs for the Band, he had a nice voice, but nothing compared to Levon, (the drummer) or Rick Danko (the guy singing the Chester verse). Robbie often wrote songs with a certain singer in mind, many think Richard Manuel had the best voice, and he was great, check out "The Shape I'm in" also from The Last Waltz. However, my favorite is Rick. Except for Levon they were all Canadians, Robbie was born in Toronto, his mother was Mohawk and Cayuga, his father, who died before Robbie was born was a Jewish gangster. Robbie grew up with an abusive stepfather, music became his escape. He wrote his first songs when he was 15.
