The drummer, Levon Helm was from Arkansas, hence the accent ~ the rest of the guys in the band are from Canada. Their style of music was referred to as "Americana". I love this version of "The Weight" as the Staples bring the song to another level. Mavis' voice is amazing. "Respect Yourself" is a great song if you'd like to hear more of the Staple Singers.

Robbie Robertson wrote this, great Canadian musician. He last stuff was writing the score for the movie 'Killers of the Flower Moon' (2023) which earned him a him a posthumous nomination for Best Original Score at the Academy Awards this year. RIP. Check out 'Up On Cripple Creek' or 'The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down' with the Band. 'Somewhere Down The Crazy River' was his biggest solo hit and also well worth your time. Cheers.

Except without Robbie. He was very determined to not go back on the road. Robbie went on to write scores for several Martin Scorsese's movies. The remaining of The Band continue to tour, they were still good, but without Robbie to write songs they did not have any new material.@@cablebrain9691

The Staple Singers were a family gospel group who first recorded in the 50s, only Mavis survives today. they had two big hits in the 70s, "Respect Yourself" and "I'll Take You There". The Band were one of the best groups and were Bob Dylans' backing band and released a famous album in 1968 called "Music From Big Pink". Only Garth Hudson, the organ player, survives today. This could have been recorded last week but it is nearly 50 years old, time waits for no man, get a Squier Telecaster and start picking!!!

The Staples actually recorded their own version of “The Weight” (which is a great one!) so obviously they knew the song cold. And of course they and the Band were all top-notch musicians. But weirdly, my first time hearing the song with both ears was in the documentary film It Might Get Loud, where Jimmy Page, Jack White and The Edge play it on acoustic guitars over the end credits.😊

This is from a documentary - The Last Waltz. This was The Band's last appearance together with their original line-up. It was filmed at the famous Winterland Ballroom here in San Francisco, which closed a month later for good. The show lasted for many hours and included many stellar guests besides The Staples: Bob Dylan (The Band started as his backing band), Eric Clapton, Ringo Starr, Joni Mitchell, Neil Diamond, Bruce Springsteen, Emmylou Harris, Dr. John, Van Morrison, Ronnie Wood, Neil Young and others. Check the whole movie sometime. It's well worth a watch. It was directed by Martin Scorsese. Thanks for watching and sharing! Peace from SF

You need to know: the Band was/always were as soulful as it gets (best concert I have ever seen, back in the day!). So, yeah, here are the Staples Singers, full to the brim with soul too = but the Band didn't catch it from them; they had it. Hall of Famers and well-deserved. Watch one of the live cuts of the Band doing "It Makes No Difference". One of dozens. Have you caught any of the "Playing For Change" videos? AMAZING, and just a year or two ago, they used this song: people from all over the world doing pieces.

This version is one of my all time favorite songs. The harmonies of both groups add a dimension the original album version doesn't have. I've watched many of these "reaction" videos to this song it a shame that more don't know The Staple Singers. It also surprises me that people don't know how the violin is used as a fiddle to create a distinct country sound.

I think the sound that your trying to explain is called gospel. The Staple singers put the cherry on top with Mavis' wonderfull voice but the song always had that feel even at any of the shows with The Band! They played the music that moved them and never worried about the pigeon hole that others tried to squeeze them into. This was a farewell performance by The Band and they invited all their friends! This wasnt put on by a corporate anybody. This was friends playing together for the love and enjoyment of each other!

Has to be one of the best, definitely the best "heartbreak" song of all times, and Rick knows how to sing it, so it tears your heart out. Robbie said of the lyric's "supposedly time heal all wounds, except sometimes it doesn't this is one of those times". He wrote it with Rick in mind, felt Rick could sing it without it coming off as self pity.
