"The Band" was a Canadian-American rock band formed in 1967. They started out as the "Hawks", the backing group for singer Ronnie Hawkins & later they were the back up band for Bob Dylan. Their most popular songs included "The Weight" & "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down". But they had a lot of other great songs such as "King Harvest (Has Surely Come)", "The Shape I'm In", "Ophelia", "It Makes No Difference" etc.

My dad went to college/law school at Fayetteville, Arkansas and graduated in 1969. He said he used to see the Band on Dickson Street (our bourbon street) about once a month when they played for Ronnie Hawkins and the Hawks. I got to see them once in the 80s at Ft. Smith, Arkansas. Absolutely fantastic. I also got to see BB King at the same club about the same time. There was a 92 yr old woman in the audience that it was her birthday. He called her up to the stage, congratulated her, and took a big ring off his finger and put it on hers and said happy birthday. Coolest move ever.

It's a Clavinet with a wah wah pedal creating the sound you were wondering about, great reaction

Weird, I always assumed it was a mouth harp growing up.

". . a drunkard's dream if I ever did see one." If you get a chance, check out ANY of the tunes from their last concert, "The Last Waltz" It had some of the biggest names in Rock, Folk, Blues at the time. Thanks, Ace! Glad to see you're getting into some of the best music there is!

The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down is a fantastic storytelling song and I can't tell you how often it pops up when you are jamming around a bonfire or at a party or between working on original songs during band practice or if it comes on the jukebox at a bar and everybody starts singing along.

The older cool kids and some of my cousins all liked sitting in the back of the school bus. When they were there I was in elementary school mid 70's. They would sing that song a lot and I always wanted to know who did it. Once I found out it was The Band and heard more of their songs I was hooked!

The weird-sounding noise between singing lines is a clavinet (a keyboard instrument) being played through a wah-wah pedal.

They called themselves The Hawks when backing up Ronnie Hawkins in the mid-sixties. They hung around the house in Woodstock, NY while Bob Dylan was there writing. He would holler out: Go get the band in here! And these guys came inside, so they backed up Dylan for a while and called themselves "The Band." Then they were out on their own.

Love your reactions. Back in the day, with all the turmoil that was going on, musicians and songwriters were trying to change the world. I believe their music has, and with the help of you and other reactors, will continue to do so. Thank you.

Spike Jones, in the 1940's to the 1950's, did many humorous songs. If you want to hear comedy songs. Check out Spike Jones and Ray Stevens, Ray was the replacement for Spike Jones in 1960's and 1970's for funny/comedy songs.

Quite often trying to figure out if a song is blues, country, rock, jazz, or whatever is a waste of time. Many times the music is a mix of different genres. If it's good music just kick back and enjoy, and don't worry about which box to put it in. Have a merry Christmas!

The Band were unusual when they released their first album. Although they have an Americana/roots rock sound, they are all Canadians except their drummer, who was from Arkansas. The Staple Singers, a great gospel group, joined them for the version of The Weight you reacted to earlier. I'd suggest next, King Harvest (Has Surely Come), their funkiest song. Also Chest Fever, I Shall Be Released, We Can Talk About It, Jemima Surrender, The Shape I'm In and The Night They Drove Ole Dixie Down. These are superb musicians who perform with truth.

That was a jaw harp, not a guitar. It is a look with a strip of metal in the middle you pluck with your finger, as you hold it in your mouth. look it up on the internet, it is a cool simple instrument.

The sound your are pondering is a Clavinette played by Garth Hudson, I believe. The Band is an American Treasure.....

Actually they are a Canadian treasure. All but Levon Helm ( Arkansas. ) are Canadian. Robbie Robertson, Rick Danko, Richard Manuel, and Garth Hudson ( the only living member left )
