Their best song IMO: Hazy Shade of Winter. And no way they are one hit wonders. There's also In Your Room, Manic Monday (written by Prince), Eternal Flame, and lots more.

"she do kinda look good..." is the understatement of the century. that's Susanna Hoffs, kid. She's one of pop music's goddesses. The Bangles have a very deep catalogue of "bangers." one of the biggest bands of the 80s. sold millions of albums back when that meant something.

Loved when the DJ played this song and the whole party would wind around from room to room and through the bar in a line doing the Egyptian dance. Got really fun and crazy! The Bangles emerged from Cali in the early 80's, wanting to be the female version of The Beatles, where every member sang lead. The classic line-up was Susannah Hoffs (guitar/ vocals), sisters Vicki (guitar/ vocals) and Debbi Peterson (drums/ vocals) and Michael Steele (bass/ vocals) ... One of their first hits was a song written by Prince - 'Manic Monday'. The Bangles broke big in the 80's, but were derailed by jealousies and petty issues as Susannah Hoffs became the famous face and the other members felt slighted. They broke up in 1989 after only 3 albums. They reunited in 1998 to tour once again and released 2 more albums, but bassist Michael Steele left The Bangles, replaced by Anette Zilinskas (bass) . Other Bangles hits - 'Hazy shade of winter'... 'Eternal flame'... 'If she knew what she wants'... 'Going down to Liverpool'... 🔥🔥

The Bangles were formed in 1981 by sisters Vicki and Debbi Peterson (lead guitar and drums respectively), Susanna Hoffs (vocals and rhythm guitar) was a childhood friend of theirs who had some Hollywood connections that helped them get in the door. Michael Steele (bass guitar and vocals) was originally a part of The Runaways in the 70s, that band had Joan Jett and Lita Ford, but she left that band before they got famous, and The Bangles were truly her redemption. This was just one of 4 top 10 hits off of their 2nd album "Different Light" Before they were signed with Columbia Records, they had an interview with IRS Records, but they didn't sign them out of fear that they would outshine the other all girl rock band on that label, The Go-Go's (another awesome band) Next check out Hero Takes A Fall Going Down to Liverpool Manic Monday Walking Down Your Street If She Knew What She Wants Hazy Shade of Winter In Your Room Get The Girl (they recorded this song when they reunited in 1997 as the husband of Susanna Hoffs was the director of the Austin Powers movies and was a big fan of the band. He asked Susanna if it was possible to get the band back together to record this song) Due to inner turmoil and problems with their label, Columbia Records, they split up in 1989, but have since reunited and have been recording new music, sadly without Michael Steele as she didn't want to tour, so they reached out to their original bass player from when they were originally known as The Bangs, and have been performing, recording and touring ever since.

" Susanna Hoffs (vocals and rhythm guitar) was a childhood friend of theirs" ... This isn't true. They shared many of the same influences, but didn't know one another. "Upon her graduation from UC Berkeley in 1980, she set out to find a new band. How did she do this? By making a flyer, as was the style at the time. ... Sue went on to place an ad in The Recycler, a weekly classified newspaper, with her dream band freshly formed in her mind, but only one other girl ever responded to her ad; Annette Zilinskas. It would be in yet another ad placed in The Recycler that Hoffs would find her band. This classified ad had been placed by Lynn Elkind, the recently departed guitarist of Those Girls who remained a roommate of the Peterson sisters, but it would be with a strange twist of fate that Vicki would be the one to pick up the phone at the other end of the line on 9 December 1980 (Lynn was out). There was an immediate connection, a sense of familiarity as they spoke about their mutual love for John Lennon. The murder of the Beatle just a day earlier had sent shock waves throughout the world and was a central catalyst in propelling the future bandmates deeper into music. Sue and Vicki shared the same emotions as they spoke on the phone at length, consoling one another over the shock loss and many other things. There was an immediate connection, a sync, but ultimately, Vicki felt that ethically she couldn’t steal a possible bandmate from Lynn. Sue was, after all, responding to the Recycler ad placed by Lynn. Lynn soon contacted Sue but it was clear that the vital spark of chemistry required just wasn’t there. Weeks later and now guilt free of commitments, Vicki reconnected with Sue. The remaining members of Those Girls now had a possible bandmate. Meeting for the first time at Susanna’s house in her parent’s converted garage in Brentwood in January 1981, the Petersons named the bands that influenced them. They shared knowledge of The Hollies, Arthur Lee and Love, they knew who The Grass Roots were, an essential ingredient as Sue later noted, and the chemistry was instantaneous. It clicked. They held an intense love for The Beatles, another long standing influence, their own fixation mirroring Hoffs. The Petersons listened to demo tapes from Sue’s Unconscious era with David Roback and exchanged their own. Sue’s cassettes featured The Velvet Underground’s ‘I’ll Be Your Mirror’ and some originals including a surf instrumental entitled ‘Speedway’. They then played together for the first time. Harmonies came easy for the trio. The Petersons taught Sue the two-chord progression of Jefferson Airplane’s ‘White Rabbit’ and everything else came together. The Colours were born virtually overnight. ...The name change from The Colours to The Bangs was gutsy and short with recognisable linkage to the sixties, and unfolded in August 1981. ...Debbi worked in retail, Sue in a ceramics factory and Vicki at Laird International Studios - they recorded their two-track debut for $35 at Radio Tokyo, a ten dollar an hour studio in November 1981. ...The success of the debut single sparked a demand for live shows and subsequently meant that the band had to evolve into a quartet. With Susanna’s ad still running in The Recycler, she was reconnected with Annette Zilinskas. As a rhythm guitarist and singer, Annette agreed to hone her skills on bass when asked. The Bangs now had their fourth member. ...The Bangs’ slowly simmering popularity captured the attention of another band and another Bangs. This New Jersey band were all-male and they wanted to retain their name after releasing an EP on East West Records. The New Wave band desired $40,000 for rights to the name. This served the band with a dilemma of a forced and sudden name change... which delayed the release of the EP until 25 January 1983 as the release artwork had to be amended. The Bangs couldn’t, however, completely erase the roots of what they had solidified across the local music scene during the past year so they retained the ‘Bang’ and added a few letters. They were now Bangles."

When I was a kid, not a single male alive wasnt madly in love with Susanna Hoffs, the lead singer... the tiny brunette just to be clear. And no... they werent remotely close to a One Hit Wonder. They got some amazing songs.
