My father has NO requests for when he dies about his funeral. 40 years ago, he agreed to donate his body to science for study. The only thing he asked me, as a child, was to learn this song and remember it for him. When he's gone, this song will be where I go to visit him. He's kind of a genius.

This is consistently voted the Greatest song of all time. It's beautifully melancholic. How a 25 year old can write a song like that, is beyond me.

As an old person, I'm gratified that you appreciate The Beatles music. I was 14 when they hit it big in the U.S. One of the secrets that I never heard them speak about was that they didn't have a formula - i.e. almost every song they recorded was different from every other. Great acts are like that. In my opinion, their producer George Martin was a big part of the reason their music was so different. The four of them, mostly John Lennon and Paul McCartney though, wrote the songs. George Martin made sure the arrangements were as good as they are. The four sometimes gave Martin their ideas, and he did as much as he could to accomodate them. I'm glad to see you recognize their greatness.

This is my favorite Beatles song. The Beatles is my favorite band. Next month they will have been my favorite for 57 years, since seeing them on Ed Sullivan at age 5. 'Rubber Soul' is the first album I ever bought. Paul McCartney is the best concert I've ever seen. This song gets better every time I hear it. The Beatles changed the music landscape. No one, no one group will ever match their genius. In My Life is a masterpiece.

Virtually every band was inspired or influenced by the Beatles, and to a lesser but significant extent the Rolling Stones. Not only in the UK but worldwide. I doubt there would be a Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath and so on without them. Long haired men should thank them for bringing this trend and freedom back to Europe and America.

I could name numerous groups that impacted my life but no one did so much to impact my life and the 60's era more than the Beatles...when it came their songs and having waited for their albums to come out to see what other gems they created was like opening a treasure chest and finding all these colorful eggs. I am so thankful having lived that era and literally having ridden on the magical mystery tour bus.. thank you Beatles for making those memories that will be with me till my last days....

This song is played very often at Funerals, because it expresses what we mean to one another. I'm old enough now (64) to really appreciate what John Lennon was trying to say in this song. So many different people pass through, or come into our life. Read the lyrics. They are so Beautiful. Ironic, that John was shot to death in front of his New York apartment Building about 15 years later. Watching Monday Night Football, when the announcers read the news bulletin during the game. It sort of shocked everyone. This is a truly beautiful and heartfelt song from John Lennon.

This is a very smart man; he knows exactly how to play to the old school Beatles fans. "Nothing but greatness.", "genius", "amazing", "Have to read the lyrics because I don't want to butcher anything." That's exactly what they want to hear, and as long as he says it about every single Beatles song he reacts to, he'll get a giant spike in subs and views. One of the reasons the Beatles were so great is that they were one of those bands that changed the conversation. If you look at their first hits, I Want to Hold Your Hand, and Please Please Me, they are simple, rough, fun rock-n-roll songs. But they rocked harder by far than what had come before. It was mind blowing at the time. And as they grew they got experimental and led the music revolution of the 60s. Picking songs from early, mid, and late sixties will give you a different band.

Please remember that we oldies soaked these singles up aurally, in the car, at parties, in our rooms staring at the ceiling... There were no visuals. Our imaginations were free to fill in the blanks and make these songs our own. Freddie sang that radio would still be around “when we grow tired of all these visuals.”

You have to remember that these guys grew up in working class Liverpool, got popular there, went over to Germany for a while to do some gigs, and then came back and became world famous! I mean, what a rags to riches story. I think that's what captivated a lot of us in those early years. That along with that neverending stream of music that kept up for the next 10 years all the way through the '60s. I was 13 when the Beatles hit big in the States and I saw the girls my age and their reaction to the Beatles. First thing I wanted to was learn how to play a guitar! And I did. But I was 21 the year they broke up.

The Beatles are well known for their harmonies, as you have noticed. If you want to hear a magnificent example of that, listen to IF I FELL. About this song, what I admire most and find almost unbelievable, is how, at 24 - 25, they could write a song like this, looking back at things that usually happen during our lives. They have taken the viewpoint of someone much older, who has lived long and has seen how places change and some people we once knew have moved away (or we've moved away) and some friends or loved ones have died. I heard this song when it came out and I was in my teens (in 1965 I was 17) and it didnt have the impact it has now, at 73, when Ive seen how places change so much and even disappear, places that were important parts of my life. Ive also lost the friends I had way back when, as I grew up and moved away, and ive also had a friend of more than 30 years die. Love has also taken a long path and there was always that one that stands out above all the others. But for a kid (believe me, at 25 we're kids) to think like this is amazing to me. Yes, the Beatles are very special, not only in how good their music is, but in how it evolved so much in the space of the very few years they were together.(only 6 or 7 years). But even though their songs are so different, you can always say "THAT is a Beatles song". Oh, and a little "tidbit" of info about John Lennon : He made it cool for guys to wear glasses . Up to that point, it was considered uncool and unsexy to wear them. Even John himself hardly ever wore his old black plastic ones, certainly never on stage. With the advance of psychedelic culture, young people tried all different styles. John came out on the cover of the SARGENT PEPPER album wearing his now iconic round wire rim glasses. Immediately we all went and got wires, which could be bought in antique shops and never again felt goofy about wearing glasses. I even had a friend who bought a pair and had plain glass lenses put in, because he had perfect vision !

You are correct when you say it's a poem set to music. One thing you should always remember about the Beatles is, nothing is simple or just repetitive. If they repeat a chorus, they always add another harmony part, a dynamic, an instrument, or some other interesting sound, even handclapping. Their music always sets a mood, and includes many different genres and themes. Creativity is key when you're listening to them. Each song is so different from another. I grew up listening to them. I was age 10 when they came to America. And all I can say is, WOW!

What made the BEATLES significant is ...... that kind of music did not exist before. That's why the stadiums sold out. That's why woman went nuts. There were only a few artists before them like Chuck Berry and Jerry Lee Lewis but there music was more rock oriented none of the other music was as smooth or POP teenage love/relationship music. One of the members of the Beatles wrote a song when they were 20, George Harrison. He wrote Don't Bother Me in 1963, when he was 20. But, before the Beatles came together, Paul McCartney was only 14 when he wrote the Beatles first hit, Love Me Do, which was recorded and released in 1963, but written in 1956.

Both my parents are from Liverpool & went to school with the Beatles.. John liked my Mum & if not for my Dads persistence i could have been a little Beatle, but dad won Mums heart.. Mum now has Alzheimer's & Dad is looking after her like the true gentleman that my Mum fell in love with.. My parents were also at the gig with Ringo's band (i forget the name) when Ringo got the call that he was to join the Beatles.. Dad claims to have skiffled with John back in the day.. Then they moved to Australia & had me & it all went down hill from there hahaha.. Good review mate, i like how you researched the lyrics.. There will never be another band like the Beatles..

Very well-written song. Lennon & McCartney are 2 of the most gifted song writers ever & the fact that they both ended up in the same band, makes me believe in fate. Some highly recommended Beatles songs: "Help", "Happiness is a Warm Gun", "Eleanor Rigby", "Here comes the Sun", "Something", "You never give me your money", "Got to get you into my life", "I've just seen a face", "Strawberry fields Forever" & obviously "Yesterday". In 1995 a special about the Beatles came out, it was called "The Beatles Anthology'. This was the opening song to that show.

You should also try "Ticket to Ride", "Help" and "Hey Jude".

As far as the Beatles go you cant go wrong, but their true masterpiece is the entire Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band album, every song, possibly the greatest album ever. I could go on for pages about it.

Two years late to the party, i know. I was ten years old when the Beatles had their first hit, and i can't even begin to tell you what it was like here in the UK back then, you could see from the video, girls were going nuts over them. They were brilliant. then along come the Rolling Stones, and many other groups, with lots of Motown thrown in too, the 60s, was a wonderful, magical time here in London.
