A little about me and this channel:
My name is James Aubrey IV and I just recently graduated college from Iowa State University. After college I decided to take a leap of faith. So I moved to San Diego California to pursue my passion for videography/ KZfaq. Overall I'm a pretty chill person, outside of KZfaq I like to longboard, dance, play video games, lift weights and hangout with my friends. I know that success on KZfaq won't happen overnight but I'm willing to stay patient and put in the work to try to prefect my craft daily. This KZfaq channel will be centered around my life after college. You will be able to see all of the ups and downs on my journey to success. So if you like the content make sure you subscribe so you can be apart of the Rome Life Family. (Let's build our own personal Rome's together.)
What is the Rome Life ? And What does it mean to be apart of it?
Rome Life is something I started during my Sophomore year of high school (one of the worst times in my life) it started off as me documenting my journey to recovery from my shoulder surgery but eventually it turned into a platform that I could use to encourage myself as well as others to chase our dreams.
Rome Life isn't just a saying it's a way of life and for the people who want to be apart of it have to realize that. Rome wasn't built in a day it took a lot of handwork time and most importantly patience. So you can't expect your dreams to be any different
This is a reaction video used to educated and give my feedback on the song and artist

I don't know if someone mentioned it before, but Neil Diamond tells the story that at the premiere of "Shrek", all the Hollywood kids came out singing this song in the lobby so he joined in. They all gave him funny looks about this old guy knowing and singing the song with them without realizing that he originally wrote the song.

The Monkees style is usually described as Bubblegum Pop. You should listen to their debut single "Last Train to Clarksville." Another bubblegum or teen pop group you should check out is Herman's Hermits. I'm particularly fond of both "Mrs. Brown You've Got a Lovely Daughter" and "This Door Swings Both Ways."

Totally in love with them as a pre-teen girl in the 60's, had all their albums & never missed the T.V. show. (I was their demographic, after all) These guys answered a casting call for the T.V. show & then became a product of the industry. In spite of the fact that each one had musical abilities, they actually had to become a band & tour, playing music they had no part of making. Very unique situation for the time, and kudos to them all for what they went through!

This was called Bubblegum music--very popular on Am radio from 1968-1973. Very neglected here on KZfaq. Thanks so much for acknowledging it. Other hits in this genre: "Mary Mary" by the Monkees, "1-2-3 Red Light" and "Goody Goody Gumdrops" by the 1910 Fruitgum Company, "Yummy Yummy Yummy" by the Ohio Express, "Jam Up Jelly Tight" by Tommy Roe, "The Grooviest Girl in the World" by the Fun and Games, "Candida" by Dawn, "Every Beat of My Heart" by Josie and the Pussycats, "I Think We're Alone Now" by Tommy James, "Finders Keepers" by Salt Water Taffy, "Alice Long" by Boyce & Hart, "Lay a Little Lovin' On Me" by Robin McNamara, "Tracy" by the Cuff Links, many more!

The Monkees where a made for TV sitcom band to capitalize off the Beatles success. The Beatles where flattered and loved it even inviting the band to Abbey Roads studios for the recording of Sgt. Peppers. With the sucesses of the show and yours the band wanted more control including playing originals. (They weren't even alllwed to play instruments on their 1st album) the studio responded by canceling the show. Fun Trivia. The Monkees had Jimi Hendrix open up for them on their first tour. He was booed off the stage.

My parents and I are HUGE Monkee fans. My first concert was them in St. Louis of '86. I got to meet Davy. I was 6 at the time. There are some concert videos out in KZfaq Land of Mickey talking about this song (I'm a Believer) and mentions that he's been singing it long before Shrek. It's sad that we've already lost Davy and Peter, but I'm glad Mike and Mickey still tour to this day (once this pandemic is over). They have so many great hits, you won't believe how many platinum records they have. There are too many songs to list on which ones to react to. All of them is my answer. Another artist to react to that has a similar feel is Herman's Hermits with Peter Noone.

For many of us, _The Monkees_ TV show was our first exposure to what would later be known as music videos. The show was a musical comedy, and each episode had a new song they had not done before. The episodes had plots, but certainly nothing deep. The show sort of had two parents. The _Batman_ show attracted kids and many adults with its light-hearted, campy approach. So take the general vibe of that and combine it with that of the Beatles movies' _Help!_ and _It's Been a Hard Day's Night_ (Okay, I guess the Beatles' movies were our first exposure. But still.)

The Monkees were speedily created as an American version of the Beatles. The catchy pop songs and the cheeky humour were seen as money spinners. They had their own 1/2 kids show on TV each week. Think the song was penned by Neil Diamond. Think it was chosen for Shrek because it was thought of as a little bit cheesy, but also fun.

Mike Nesmith and Peter Tork were already accomplished musicians, and Micky Dolenz was a guitarist before the producers of the show put him on the drums.Davy Jones actually wanted to be the drummer, and was in fact a better drummer than Dolenz, but again, the producers wanted him up front, mostly due to his lack of height.Jones could also play guitar as well.

In the 60's record producers in LA used the Wrecking Crew for everything: Monkees, Sinatra, Beach Boys, Mommas and Papas, TV, Movies,. They were extremely skilled studio musicians who could play any style and record quickly. They were on the Monkees first two albums (the ones with all the hits). By the third album Monkee-mania had pretty much ended.

@@stephenhanson3647 yep,I was around then, and was fully aware of all those brilliant studio musicians that played on nearly all the "big name" acts of the day. If it wasnt for studio musos like The Wrecking Crew and Funk Brothers, imagine how some of those records would've have turned out. But I was only pointing out the fact that the guys in The Monkees were actually quite capable of playing themselves, but the producers obviously made the right call by utilising studio musos to play on their records.

If you grew up with The Monkees, nobody will ever top it. Mickey Dolenz had one of the great pop music voices in history. He STILL sounds great. Neil Diamond was and is a fabulous songwriter. You should investigate his catalog. "Holly Holy," "Sweet Caroline," "Brother Loves Traveling Salvation Show," "Cracklin' Rosie." Another good (tough) Monkees song is "Steppin' Stone," also covered by Paul Revere and the Raiders. The Raiders were another sixties group with endless great songs. Neat that you are listening to the original versions of the songs you love. The reason these songs were covered later is because the songs were so originally brilliant. Don't apologize for liking the version you like (unless you're wrong!). LOL!

You could make a case that The Monkees were the first ‘boy band.’ They came together through auditions for a television sitcom. The premise was the antics of bandmates who live and work together so the audition called for actors who also had musician skills. When their first few songs became hits on radio they started performing concerts and focusing on their unexpected music career.

The monkeys were a created band for a television show of the same name, originally. They were supposed to be a somewhat comical version of the Beatles and the singing was going to be dubbed until they realized they really could sing. They became a real band very quickly.

Let's Dance On, Cuddly Toy, Shades of Gray, I Wanna Be Free, A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You, Randy Scouse Git, Words, Daydream Believer, What Am I Doing Hangin' Round, She Hangs Out, Door Into Summer, When Love Comes Knockin' At Your Door, Tomorrow's Gonna Be Another Day, Zilch, Sunny Girlfriend, Listen To the Band, You Just May Be the One... The list goes on and on. The Monkees may be THE most underrated band ever. They were all 4 extremely talented singers, actors, songwriters, and musicians. They were NOT no-talent idiots playing pop stars on tv. The truth is out there. Actually, the truth is in here, on KZfaq-- a number of videos that tell the truth about who The Monkees were as a band, as musicians, and as human beings. Check 'em out. Loved your reaction to this one!

Thanks for appreciating music from that era. Your mind is open, and it shows you just like good music because it sounds good. I was 8 to 11 years old and loved the Monkees. Davy Jones lived a mile from me, and we were all pretty poor in those days. A great Manchester lad.

OMG grew up listening to the Monkees and watching their Saturday morning show, along with Scooby Doo, the Jetsons, Wacky Racers, Banana Rama, Loony Tunes, Bugs Bunny, on and on. When Saturday mornings were especially for kids after a long week of school. The good ole days.....

I see what you're saying. I'm 61 years old, so I've heard most of the original versions of many tunes. The first version someone hears, the original or not, will be the favorite. I prefer the Monkee's, but I heard that as a child. You do a great job with your revues, keep on keeping on👍

I grew up listening to my older brothers' and sisters' Monkees albums so all their songs have a big place in my heart. They started out strictly on vocals backed by session musicians but eventually, after their TV contract was done, started playing their own instruments (they already had some instrument training). I would add "Sweet Young Thing" to the Monkees songs that have already been recommended. It's one of my favorites. Also, if you want to see some cheesy old school comedy TV, you can probably see all of their TV episodes on KZfaq.

Glad to see you enjoy The Monkees :D. They gave us a lot of fun music during our childhoods. They had some phenomenal industry talent behind them (Boyce and Hart, The Wrecking Crew, Joan Baez, Stephen Stills, Neil Diamond, Frank Zappa, Bob Dylan among many others) and a vast range of songs. They had upbeat Beatle-esque tunes like Star Collector, anti-war songs like Last Train to Clarksville, Zor and Zam and Randy Scouse Git, anti-conformity songs like Pleasant Valley Sunday, love songs like Sometime in the Morning or Door into Summer, Country-folk rock tunes like Sweet Young Thing (with almost a cajun/bluegrass feel), pure dance songs like I'm Not Your Steppin' Stone, Psychedelic songs such as Daily Nightly and Porpoise Song and, my absolute favorites, quirky songs like P.O.Box 9847 and Auntie Grizelda. We've lost Davy and Peter but Mickey and Mike still perform together from time to time.

They had a tv show from 1966-1968 titled The Monkees (Micky Dolenz - Lead singer/Drums, Michael Nesmith - Guitar/Bass, Peter Tork (RIP) - Guitar/Piano/Organ, Davy Jones (RIP) - Tamborine/Maracas. They had many hits during that time and each of the 4 singers took turns on lead vocals. They started off a manufactured tv band but they all were accomplished musicians and performers. They eventually won out the right to play their own instruments. They even toured and in 1968 made a movie (Like their contemporaries The Beatles) that was called Head directed by Bob Rafelson (Five Easy Pieces) and co-wrote and co-produced it with little known actor Jack Nicholson.

This was so fun. The Monkees are interesting. They started off just a group of boys on a Saturday morning sitcom for the very young. They were not even an intentional band. Just a band made up to do the show. But they quickly became a hit with their music and next thing ya know, they are all over the radio and recording their music to please their fans. The kids loved them as well as the teens and into the young adults.
