The most famous vocal "crack" in music history. Today they would have autotuned and pitch corrected the sh!t out of it removing all the emotions. I still get a kick out of Mick's "Woo" after that note! Good on you for hearing and appreciating that part! So many reactors either miss it or don't care about it. Keep it up!

The highly underrated Ms. Merry Clayton. She did background vocals for everyone at that time yet sadly never got the honors she deserved

The female singer is Merry Clayton who is an American soul and gospel singer and an actress. When in the studio recording the song Mick (lead singer for the band) wondered if it needed a female voice. At almost midnight, one of the producer called his friend Merry to see if she'd come over to the studio to sing. He woke her up but she came over and surprised them all that she was very much pregnant. Sadly she had a miscarriage the next day that some have attributed to the strain of her late-night singing. While Gimme Shelter is perhaps her best known collaboration, she also sang backup vocals on Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Sweet Home Alabama". She was given the unique name "Merry" because she was born on Christmas Day 1948.

This song and "Paint It Black" are my two favorite songs by them. The guitar work in both is just brilliant.

Oh and the female is Merry Clayton. She is fantastic and sang on many great bands/artists songs

Fun Fact: The "rape, murder" line is sung by Mary Clayton, a well known back up singer at the time. She was in her night clothes & hair in curlers. The recording session was late at night and she was called in at the last minute. She nailed it in one take. I saw one comment one time that said "this song is the best example of Mick Jagger singing back up on his own song." 🤣 Mary can SANG.

This was a huge song during the Vietnam War. One of many anti-war songs. Buffalo Springfield - For What It's Worth, Edwin Starr - War to name a couple of others.

Story goes the female vocalist was brought in the middle of the night to sing vocals. You can hear Mick scream "WOOO" as they were in the control room and knew she killed the vocals.

There’s a documentary called 20 Feet from Stardom that talks about the black woman who sang on this. She got awakened in the middle of the night and had no idea who The Rolling Stones were. She just killed it. Fascinating movie. You should check it out.

When Merry hits those voice breaks , they travel so deep inside me that I don't only get goosebumps, but it makes cry . Just travels to your soul , you can feel the pain in her voice.

I just saw the Rolling Stones for the 2nd time this past Oct. and they are still awesome, energetic and rocking like the old days. Mind you these guys are in their late 70’s now. Check them out on KZfaq live in 2021 and you’ll see what I mean. I love the Stones🥰🥰🥰🥰 I go to a lot of concerts it’s been my thing since I was old enough to go. I started in the mid 70’s. I have been to at least 200-300+ concerts in my 60yrs😉😎 Stones have backup singers and she was one of them. I can’t remember her name off hand.

You won't regret hearing more songs from the Rolling Stones they have an incredible catalog going back close to 60 years and they're still going strong. Too many great to list them all but some of my favorites are "Angie", "Wild Horses", "Moonlight Mile" and the one that put them on the map in 1965, "Satisfaction" (do the studio version first).

One of their most famous songs is Satisfaction. I always joke that we will all be sitting in the nursing home when that riff comes on bopping our heads up and down. One of the most recognizable guitar riffs in rock.

The backing singer singing "Rape, Murder" etc gives me goosebumps every time I hear it! The singer on the original recording was Merry Clayton. She was just a hired backing singer. Her story is actually very interesting and is told in the documentary "20 Feet From Stardom" which talks about four different black backing singers, and the structural racism in the music business that they experienced.

The Stones have a long history and a variety of music to explore ... this track was written in the late 60s when the Vietnam War and race relations were threatening to tear the country apart, so the track itself has that built in menace to it. They decided that a pleading female voice was needed to really convey the message, so they brought in their friend Mary Clayton to provide the haunting vocals with Stones singer Mick Jagger. The story goes that they called her in the middle of the night to come in and record her part, so she drove herself to the studio and laid out that amazing counterpoint vocal WHILE SHE WAS PREGNANT! crazy

The Rolling Stones have been a rock group since 1962 and are still performing. After 60 years, these guys are pretty old, but you would never know it if you see how Mick Jagger (lead singer) can still move. My friend Kerry put it best, I think, when we were still in high school, when he said, "Mick dances like a rooster on acid." It's very unique and pretty incredible.

Merry Clayton was just sitting at home one late night and said there was this young rock band that were cutting an album and could she come down and lend back-up vocals. Legend has it that she showed up with curlers in her hair. Nobody at the time knew this song and her performance would become rock legend!

What I liked about the Stones is they had a rawness to their music that you don't get from others from that era. It's not just bluesy sound, it's a ragged sound.

Mick brought the back up singer into the studio in the middle of the night. She was tired and pregnant at the time. PERFECTION 🥰

I LOVE THE STONES!!!!! This has been my fav band since I can remember. Top 3 albums for me are Let it Bleed. That is the album Gimmie Shelter was on. Sticky Fingers with Can't you hear me knocking. Sister Morophine. Dead Flowers. Brown Sugar and Wild Horses ( my least favorite song). The third album is Some Girls. That has Beast of Burden. Shattered. Some Girs. Missing you. My gosh dude. I saw the stones in late 80s in St Louis MO at Busch Stadium, awesome show. ' Jumpin Jack Flash... satisfaction... brown sugar, a few of their biggest hits.

Merry Clayton did the amazing backing vocals; according to my memory of what I read, she was several months pregnant when she recorded this track. Her incredible voice and soul really carries this song to the top of the Rolling Stones’ hit list.

If you check out the Stones live then I would recommend a performance from between 1969 and 1972. If you want to watch a more recent gig then go for 1995 to 1998. In terms of studio recordings, I recommend 'Miss You', 'Jumpin' Jack Flash', 'Paint It Black', 'Sympathy for the Devil', 'Tumbling Dice', 'Bitch' and 'Can't You hear Me Knocking' to start off with. Also, the Stones actually released a brand new single a couple years ago called 'Living In a Ghost Town' which is pretty sweet.

They started as a blues band that played some rock and roll, became a pop band, had an experimental, psychedelic year or two while harassed by the police, courts, etc., then came out of that playing rocking blues again their way, being called “the greatest rock & roll band in the world”, and playing music more powerful and creative than they’d ever done before. “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction”, and “Little Red Rooster” are early; “Paint It Black”, “Ruby Tuesday”, and “She’s a Rainbow” are middle, and they burst out with “Sympathy For the Devil”, “Stray Cat Blues”, “Jumping Jack Flash”, “Monkey Man”, “Honky Tonk Women”, “Bitch”, “Can’t You Hear Me Knocking”, ….. and it goes on… still! They released an excellent blues album in 2016, ‘Blue and Lonesome’. Live I’d check out ‘The Rolling Stones’ Rock & Roll Circus’, ‘Ladies and Gentlemen,…the Rolling Stones!’, ‘Cocksucker Blues’, if you can find it’, ‘Gimme Shelter’, which is also a brilliant documentary about the end of the hippie dream at Altamont Speedway, with Jefferson Airplane, The Grateful Dead, and some Hell’s Angels, or ‘“Some Girls” Live In Texas ‘78’. when you hear Merry Clayton's voice crack it is heart wrenching. She miscarried shortly after. I was born in 1954 and played in loads of bands including with my mate Pete Shelley of Buzzcocks. It was a fantastic time to be alive.

The Stones are great live. I remember they actually released a live film that I went to see in the theaters when I was a like 13. It felt like we were actually at the show. I can't remember what it was called, but I'll try to find out if it's on YT. There's another lyric video for one of my other favorite songs called Sympathy for the Devil. Highly recommend that one as well. This is another one of those bands that will have you scratching your head from one song to the next. They are all over the place, and yet always distinctively The Rolling Stones.

The name of the powerful backing singer is Merry Clayton. She was called into the studio early hours in the morning and arrived in her pyjamas and rollers in her hair whilst being heavily pregnant. And sang with that outstanding voice. ( Sadly,the next day she miscarried her baby). No one ever knows if it was the stress of the recording studio.

I saw them live last October. It was great show for a bunch of older guys. Seeing Mick, Ronnie, and Keith was awesome. Mick wore 5 different fancy looking jackets during the show.

The female voice was Mary Clayton. The Stones were in NYC recording this song at midnight or later. They got to this part and knew they needed her. So, they got her out of bed. She came to the studio in her bathcoat and recorded her part of the song. I think she toured with them for a few years. She's amazing.

Were responsible for providing backing vocals to many groups. Her name was Merry Clayton. Her only job was backing other artists. Mick ( lead singer ) Called her in the middle of the night. The Stones came to play for us at our university in 1971. I paid £1 and thought that was a LOT, So glad I did go, how were we to know they would be iconic? How could they? We were all young. Ok , story behind the girl singing high notes! They were in L A. Manager called her at 2 in the morning to go record with these guys! She’s 8 month pregnant , her husband says go! So she goes and sings but at the moment in the highest note, her voice cracked! Unfortunately she miscarried the next day! She still travels with the stones.
