Exactly right, it's "Sympathy for the Devil" because it's humanity that is responsible, not the Devil. So the answer to the question, "Can you guess my name" is "humanity" not Satan. One of the last lines, "I'll tell you one time, you're to blame"

When this song first came out, they had been concerned about this reaction, and changed the song to the more "mamba/samba beat" so it wouldn't be viewed as threatening. It turned out this song didn't get a huge amount of public heat, though it did get some - another song from Beggar's Banquet was the one that was publicly brutalized, "Street Fighting Man", because it dealt with the issues of the black man in America, which called people out far more than a simple devil song with a happy beat. (Of course, other people can interpret these events in other ways, but this was my view of things.)

Your spot on with the meaning, and well done at a young age for seeing that, there are not many Christian groups that do not believe in the ‘personification of a Devil’ most mainstream churches believe the Devil is a man, but when you study Bible truth it becomes clear that the word Devil derives from ‘diablos’ just meaning adversary (mans adverse and sinful thoughts), so yes, what lots of people see as the work of ‘the Devil’ is really just ‘you and me’ as the clever lyrics in this great song allude to. Believing In a Devil is really no different to blame shifting.

Clifton The greatest trick the Devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist. The song is a history lesson about just that. The Devil is always close by. Look at racism, hate, war, injustice, fear of what you don't know or understand. Look out of the corner of you eye, the Devil is there. We gotta care and love each other as people. Listen to CAN'T YOU HEAR ME KNOCKIN', GIMME SHELTER, MONKEY MAN, MOONLIGHT MILE.

Sympathy for the Devil" is credited to Jagger and Richards, though the song was largely a Jagger composition. Jagger stated in an interview that his influence for the song came from Baudelaire a french poet and from the Russian author Mikhail Bulgakov's novel The Master and Margarita (which had just appeared in English translation in 1967). Jagger is singing in first person like he is the devil character in the song.

Welcome to one of the greatest “rabbit holes” in Rock & Roll. The Rolling Stones were, are and always will be one of the most amazing and influential bands in history. They have been the cause of much controversy over the decades, often because of the style and content of their music or the message contained within their lyrics. Even today the intended message of some songs can be misinterpreted, “Brown Sugar” being one that comes to mind. Just remember that they were invariably coming from a position of respect, admiration and love, and were simply trying to bring focus upon that which they felt was unseen and that society needed to acknowledge.

I think you're spot on with your interpretation of this song. 'Sympathy' for the Devil as 'he' is blamed for most if not all evil when we and we alone as humans are responsible for our actions, our atrocities, our self and planetary destruction. We are thrown into this world without explanation and are abandoned as a species to determine our own morality.

I think y'all are now hooked on the Stones. This was the 1st time I've heard Ms Recklezz say out loud, "I want to hear more. Also, @Lifewithrecklezz said at time stamp 3:55, "I don't want to sound dumb." .... don't worry about it. Whether you get what the song is talking about or not, your observations and interpretations are always thoughtful. (By the way, I do think you got it, and at the end of the song it was clear to me that both of you understood what the Stones were alluding to.) As I've watched your reactions the past several months what I've notice is that you have a couple strong traits that will carry you well in life - your thirst for searching out different music you've not listened to (and I suspect in other areas of life as well) is a good thing. Combine that with how you try to pay attention and try to understand the point of view of the musician is wonderful to see .... and will translate into other areas of life. Good on you. Great song and a great reaction once again.

Still one of my favourite bands. The early Rolling Stones where such a rebels. What The Beatles are for Pop music, well The Rolling Stones are for Rock music.

The distinction pop and rock didn't really exist then. It was all pop music as distinct from classical music. Classical music had disappeared up its own backside in a philosophy of silence, random noise, and navel gazing. Pop music maintained tuneful emotion, fun, sadness and, first worth Beatles and Dylan, then with many others including Stones, it became far more than just lightweight fun to be deep, meaningful, and still danceable. Stones would reject the description 'rock'. They were a rock and roll group. As Richards said, when rock became a thing, something like "A lot of people playing rock have forgotten to roll". Rock can be mainly for teen and 20s men expressing hopes, fears, etc. The Who are my favourite group but that fits them and Townshend has said as much. The rolling appealed to girls - girls loved the Stones and their guys benefited from Stones warming up their girls!

They played this song at the end of “Fallen” starring Denzel Washington. If you’ve never seen it, you should definitely watch it. It’s creepy as hell and one of my favorite Denzel movies

My absolute fave Stones song. Thank you for reviewing it. Loved that you effortlessly picked up what it was about. It's such a joy to watch you go through what I went through 40+ years ago (I caught up to the Stones in the late 70's when I was a teenager). In a similar vein check out You Can't Always Get What You Want and Gimme Shelter. Dumb story, but I'll tell it anyhow. I was renting a room in a house in Liverpool in 1982, and a friend of my landlord dropped by and said she was looking for someone to drive down to Bristol with, 'cos a friend of hers was having a house party right by the football stadium where the stones were playing. We drove down, listened to Black Uhuru's set and some bloke pulls out a bunch of tix and says "who wants one?" Walked right down to the stage as the Stones started their set. I was so stoked because I thought I might never have another chance to see them again (because they were so old) - little did I know, 40 freaking years later, they would still be playing live gigs! Whodathunk it? Here's a picture from the concert: i.pinimg.com/originals/b5/b7/0f/b5b70fe2e75bc6317605ac875757ce17.jpg

Sympathy For The Devil was the best history lesson I learned as a kid. And the dysfunctional ills of society blamed on one entity instead of the freewill to live to destroy to exist to enjoy.

Being hispanic, i've always referred to this as some "white boy salsa" because it sounds like what some white dudes would play after having heard some latin music and getting inspired by it lmao i love it

actually white people invented the instruments that are played by virtually every musician of every genre of music in the world including rock, pop, country jazz folk classical and yes gospel. (understood only if your a fan of truth and truism.)..... like the bible says "seek the truth and the truth shall set you free", but people of the lie love their lies. It's the fashionable thing today among a certain percentage of population to negatize white people. That is to be expected... They negatized Jesus also. and HE said "When people lie and hate and say all manner of evil things against you, remember........THEY HATED ME FIRST" . The white people of Europe were what the name "slave" came from. ~Slavics".

Here's one: 'VENTILATOR BLUES'. Bet nobody else requests it. From Exil on Main Street double LP. Written nearly 50 years before Covid ventilators. Stones have almost never played it live - they could never recapture the groove they found when recording it. Early Covid, they had a hit song, Ghost Town. They wrote it before Covid hit but, because it was suddenly so relevant, they slightly modified it
