First Time Hearing The Smashing pumpkins - 1979
Today, we dive into something truly special. For the very first time, I’m experiencing The Smashing Pumpkins’ iconic track “1979” and I’m inviting you to join me on this journey. As someone who’s always been captivated by the transformative power of music, this moment feels like a trip back in time, yet it’s entirely new to me.
Throughout the video, I share my raw, unfiltered reactions to the song’s mesmerizing melodies, thought-provoking lyrics, and the unique atmosphere that only The Smashing Pumpkins can create. Billy Corgan’s voice and artistic vision truly stand out, and I couldn’t help but notice a resemblance to Gerard Way in both looks and vocal intensity. This connection adds an extra layer of intrigue as we explore the depth of the song and its impact.
Join me as I dissect the elements that make “1979” a timeless piece, from its lyrical depth to its captivating soundscapes. Whether you’re a long-time fan of The Smashing Pumpkins or, like me, discovering their genius for the first time, this video promises an authentic and engaging exploration of music’s ability to connect us across time and space.
Don’t forget to hit like, subscribe, and share this video if you enjoy my journey into the heart of ‘90s alternative rock. Your support means the world to me and fuels my passion for discovering and sharing music’s most impactful moments. Let’s keep the conversation going in the comments below - I’d love to hear your thoughts and experiences with The Smashing Pumpkins and any other music recommendations you have!

Smashing Pumpkins were my Mom's favorite band (tied with Green Day) and they were absolutely a formative band for me and my pre-adolescence. At the time of this song, they were wrapped in with a bunch of other post-grunge bands. But this album (Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness) was an absolute MONSTER and remains arguably the defining album of their career. I got to take my Mom to see SP in concert a few years before she passed (as well as Green Day) and she says it was one of the greatest musical moments of her whole life. So yeah, I have a lot of emotions tied up in this band and seeing you enjoy it makes my heart happy!

The car in the video was a 1972 Dodge Charger. It was a muscle car, with a huge engine and a lot of power. It probably wasn't worth a lot in 1979 (when the video was set), but would have been collectible in 1995. A 1972 Charger in good condition would be worth a lot today. Kids really loved the muscle cars of the late 60s and early 70s. Other musical groups from Chicago: Styx The Chi-Lites The Paul Butterfield Blues Band The Buckinghams Rufus (featuring Chaka Khan) Chicago (of course!)

Billy Corgan went to my high school (about 15 years before I did). Very proud of that. 😁 I remember looking up his yearbook pictures in the school library with my friends and we all were floored that he had hair back then! I love this song. The whole album makes me really nostalgic, and this is my favorite song from it.

@@nigelchaos Yeah Corgan's fascinating guy. He admitted a few years ago Today and Disarm were written on the same day presumably after seeing his estranged parents. Disarm is about child abuse he suffered and Today was about him thinking about doing himself in. Paradoxically the tone of Today is up beat and Disarm is ballad to his abusers sang without a hint of anger.

In 1979, most of Chicago 7-11’s and White Hen Pantry’s had rules posted limiting the number of kids under 12 to coming into the store more than 3 at a time. This might have added to the feeling of waiting at that age because if you were anywhere near 12 you were often forced to wait even if you were actually 12.

We were already married with a grade school child when this group came out with their first hit album. Despite that, me and my wife actually liked this group. Their album was sort of bipolar, gentle and melodic like the song 1979, then switching to some screaming fast beat song, all the way through the album. While we appreciated all their songs, 1979 remained our favorite.

It's been that long... I remember getting my learner's permit at 14 ¾, you were supposed to get 3 months to learn to drive before you could get your license at 15 years old - which really didn't do much good, because you needed an adult with you to be able to drive until you reached 16 years-old only after turning 16 were you granted the right to drive by yourself. Of course that was right around that time, and it's changed a bit since then. Also back then, the legal drinking age was *only* 18! That changed by the mid-80s though. I thought it was so weird to hear a song about the late 70s in the mid 90s and get such a sense of nostalgia out of it. And that it really resonated with me, sort of mirrored my experiences in 1979! BTW, I wasn't the cool kid(s), but happened to sometimes get to hang out with them. Good times... as the 90s SNL bit went.

The Smashing Pumpkins made a sequel to this. It's the music vid called "Perfect." Basically, the characters in 1979 but a bit older, leading different lives. Also, Emo arose in the late 90s and early 2000s, bands that formed before then aren't Emo bands. Pumpkins is a 90s alternative band.

Yes, finally you got right the Alt Emo moniker, Irish Girl. I never really watched many MTV videos back in the day, so I always am fascinated by your take. Although these guys are often heard on the radio stations I listen to, I've never seen them live. The only thing I recall about the band back in the day, was that a young girl was trampled to death in the moshpit at the Point Theatre in Dublin. Better to be crowd averse and live to listen another day.

I drove a '71 New Yorker to and from school every weekend. The Charger in this video reminds me of that land yacht. 5000 pound car with a massive engine. It would seat 8 if you were cozy. Besides that, their album Siamese Dream is pretty much one great track after another. Music videos from that album are Cherub Rock, Today, Rocket (my favourite video of the album), and Disarm. Wow. Okay Diane, I have seen them in concert twice. Once at the Tibetan freedom concert in San Francisco in 1997. However I got this “double CD” right when it came out in 1995. Billy is ridiculous. This song has so much significance in my life, it’s not even funny. Listen to “Soma” I’m sure you’ll love it!!!!!!

Yet another song I know, but didn't know the name of. My carefree years were a little after 1979, but the hanging out with friends without a care in the world times were the best.

I can't believe it. I've thought since the 90s that the drummer died of a heroin overdose. He's one of my favorite drummers, and I'm so glad he's alive!

I've heard of these guys, but not heard them. The 90's were not a decade I listened to music in. We all have gaps in our life that need filling. Thank god for Diane's reactions!

When I hear smashing pumpkins I'm always reminded of the classic line from the Simpsons" Billy Corgan, smashing pumpkins. Homer Simpson, smiling politely. 🤣x

This is such an iconic 90s song. I feel like it's one of those songs everyone knew, even if they didn't listen to rock.

Thanks Diane! I was never a huge fan of the Smashing Pumpkins, but I always liked this song. The rhythm and beat seems to bring me a burst of energy. Hypothetically, listening to this song while walking and carrying a backpack may help. Hypothetically, of course. 😉

They were labeled Alternative, and it fits their eclectic sound: a little bit of this, a little of that and a lot of angst.

Fun fact: Billy Corgan and I went to the same junior high school in Glendale Heights, Illinois. He was two years ahead of me. I didn't know him. Maybe if i had, junior high wouldn't have sucked as hard as it did.
