Tool meets you where you are... Maynard's lyrics are almost like blank canvases; they are open to nearly infinite interpretation, and almost anyone can find deeply personal meaning and associations within their songs. Maynard certainly has specific meaning in mind when he writes lyrics , but he writes them in such a way that they are a "reflection" of the listener...it's just beautiful.

Tool's drummer, Danny Carey, is arguable one of the best drummers in music history. If you like his work on this song I'd highly recommend the "drum-cam" video of Tool performing one of their newer songs "Pneuma." Listen to the songs in order. Each is like chapters over a six book series. There are so many layers and each album could be interpretated as one story. Becoming aware (Opiate EP) falling into depravity (Undertow) the efforts to overcome one's past (AEnima where this song is from) to sidestepping human nature through thoughts (Lateralus) ect... it's crazy cool. Keep Going. SPIRAL OUT!

@@rosalieelliottofficial you should totally do a separate reaction of the studio version! It's a lot darker, it sounds as if the emotions are still very raw. This live version, on the other hand, sounds like it's taking place some time after, since it has a more distant and serene, but also more melancholic approach.
@floorsbychrisable

I would disagree on the subject matter/music alignment. I actually think that is the reason for the rearrangement of the song and the comments he makes about seeing the song in a new light before the Salival version. The sparse, hollow sound feels less angry/aggressive and more emotionally distraught to me. BUT i will agree the album verison is my favorite, for me because of the power of Maynards full throated mixed voice and the clean production.

Great reaction! I was hoping with your physiology background you would do this song. My take on the song for about 20 years was that it was about an abusive relationship. BUT, now the last few years I have a different view, and you touched on it a little… Personal reflection is what I believe this song is about. My reasoning: at the beginning he says, let’s go to a vulnerable place, then I’ll meet you on the other side. A lot of Tools songs is about self betterment. Another reason, this song is on the same album as the song “jimmy” (a song I hope you react to) just shortly after it. A song where he is talking to his 11 year old self about the time in his life that his childhood was lost due to the traumatic event that happened to his mother. So, I believe “Pushit” is him struggling the that person he became after this event. He is not happy with what he became after that “kill this infant here before me”…”what is this but a reflection.” I could go on with a lot more points in the lyrics but this is enough to get the wheels turning . But I believe he is battling his younger self, that is who is pushing him into the gap…the deep down places where we bury things that we don’t want to face. Please do all the songs where Maynard is dealing with his mother, I would love to see your reaction do to your background. Also check out their song “right in two” I thing you would enjoy the religious perspective of that song.

"Choke this infant here before me." Is a reference to destroying innocence and/or naivety that everyone is faced with in order to move on a grow as a person. The lines about seeing his reflection is looking deeply into oneself and maybe not being so pleased with what it is you see, but making the choice to destroy and move forward and grow. But all in all the most beautiful point of Tool lyrics in particular is what meaning the listener gets from it at the time, this is one of them many reasons that I really enjoy bands that do this. Hope you continue to enjoy your musical journey within the realm of rock and heavy metal. \m/(^_^)

From personal experience. Coming from using LSD as a teen to escape brutal bullying you start to question which is the better reality. Sober or in my mind's eye. I chose to quit. Maynard, like most poets, will never tell you what a song is about. He might mention what inspired it, but it's intentionally written to allow you to develop your own interpretation. So, asking for us to tell you what the song is about is guaranteed to get you 1.5K (as of this writing) interpretations, all equally valid and none more valid than your own.

In trying not to be one of these blowhard, biased fans touting how this band or that band is "the best band of all time" type of person; I'll simply say that if you do decide to check more of their songs out, I think you'll find that "unique" is probably an accurate way of describing Tool. Their sound has changed so much from their beginnings which is why I think so many people love them...we feel like we kinda grew up WITH them. The majority of their fanbase is in the 35-55 range (mainly basing this off of people I know and people I've seen at concerts throughout the years). Early Tool (Opiate and Undertow) was angry and aggressive; just what most teenage and early twenty-something rock fans liked, but then they released Aenima. That album shifted their sound so much. It still had some aggression but it had this undertone of maturity about it. The Lateralus album that followed was very mature, very progressive and felt like a spiritual journey; very introspective. The 10,000 Days album was less spiritual but still proggy and mature. It dealt with more real world elements and influences. Their latest album, Fear Inoculum, is proggy and very retrospective - all in my opinion, anyway. LOL!

Given the kind of band they are and the music they make there is something beautiful about them being passed between generations in this way and it gives hope that this awesome band will survive through time as indeed their music deserves too.

He had a lot to say He had a lot of nothing to say We'll miss him We'll miss him While Tool doesn't have a "bad" song, I like Pushit, but I'd guess not too many fans have it in their top 5 either. For me the last 2 years of been away from my, shall we say not too nice EX, Salivial version as been incredibly theraputic, and maybe that is what Maynard means looking from a new perspective, looking back after it is over. Sorry, I get really excited when I find someone about to be initiated into the TOOL Army. If leaving multiple comments is bad edict, let me know. But I want to get your attention. TOOL'S music isn't like music. I've honestly stopped typing for like 15 min trying to figure out how to say how much variety of music I've heard with out dropping names for paragraphs. But TOOL is really something more. I wish I could twist your arm, because I'm not pulling you leg. I'll just subscribe and see where you go. I wish for you to listen to Sweat, the first song in the TOOL discography. OR the most popular TOOL reactions are The Pot and Pnuema drum cam. I can't recommend more than that because listening to any other would contains spoilers. There is an evolution from album to album. I know ppl want you to hear next : 46 and 2, Schism, Right in Two, vicarious, invincible, H, the Grudge, (I've seen those last two songs break men into tears) or Lateralus the spiritually mind blowing masterpiece. I mean, the song and the album won awards! Okay I'll stop. Nice to meat you. Spiral Out!

No need to say sorry. Comment as much as you like. I’m more concerned with quality of comments than quantity. :) thank you for sharing your thoughts. And for the suggestions. Sounds like there’s quite a few special pieces (as in masterpieces) I need to be listening to.

Tool is notorious for using unconventional time signatures. They're compete wizards with it! You should do a reaction to Tool's "Lateralus". And if you do, you should immediately do another reaction (or just watch it on your own time- but I'd love to see your reaction to the explanation of Lateralus via this video kzfaq.info/get/bejne/q7V4nsh5l7zFdWQ.html ). It will break down the reasoning behind the entire song by explaining it's all based on the fibonacci sequence. I think you'll really enjoy it.

So in simple form...lol.. The first time I heard Lateralus when it came out, I was really attracted to the rhythm woven into the odd time signature. After I watched the explanation vid (in the post I'm replying to), no words can explain. Just... 😳🤯

Oh ffs with the "Disturbed's Sound of Silence", its NOT Disturbed's song. They did a great cover, but its Simon & Garfunkel's song.

As a reactor Do yourself a favor. GO TO THE BEGINNING. Lots of Reactors jump around to most requested songs. Please don't. They go from angry to this over six albums. I know 1 reactor to take the journey. He's starting Fear Inoculum Album next TOOL Tuesday. I learn more about tools story from him then I did loving them the last 20 years.
