This was recorded in January of 1985 right after the American Music Awards since all these recording artists were in town for that show. All artists were required to check their egos at the door and none of their entourage was allowed into the studio. Lionel Richey, Michael Jackson and Quincy Jones took the Billboard 100 chart and went right on down from 1 and asked all those artists to be a part of this recording to benefit the drought and starvation going on in Africa at the time. No one was paid for this song. They didn't have long to put this together. Something like 2 weeks or so. But this was all recorded in one night. The movement was started in October 1984 with Sir Bob Geldof saw a documentary of the starvation in Africa and wanted to do something. So Band Aide was formed and they sang "Do They Know It's Christmas" again with all the top British and European recording artists. There is a documentary on how that came about as well as the one for USA for Africa. Then in Summer of 1985 there was Live Aid. Again first ever concert that no one was paid as all monies went to Africa relief.

Harry Belafonte (he's in the chorus) spearheaded the project and Lionel Richie and Michael Jackson wrote the song. It was recorded in one night after the American Music Awards, which simplified matters since all the artists were already gathered. Most of the biggest names in music at the time participated, Prince declined and Linda Ronstadt who had accepted had to withdraw due to illness, so producer Quincy Jones posted a sign at the entrance to the studio that read "Check you ego at the door!" knowing with how tight the schedule was there was no time for diva antics.

That's why it always bothered me that MJ wasn't part of the group. Quincy was conducting, so why did MJ need his own space to record while all these other megastars checked their egos at the door? I didn't watch the documentary, but it rubbed me wrong as a kid, and watching the video now, it still does. That's DIANA ROSS you're dueting with and you can't share a mic?

Bruce Springsteen was the guy with the raspy voice. He was one one the most famous musicians of the 1980's, won a lot of Grammy's in his time, and he had many great songs. Born In The USA, The River, Born to Run are a few of his many great songs.

It was so smart to pair him with Stevie Wonder. The power of Springsteen, the thing that makes his voice emotionally powerful, ias that you can feel he's putting 110% into everything he does. You can feel the extreme effort and strain at his best. The thing that makes Stevie so emotionally powerful is exactly the reverse: that he makes every single thing sound completely effortless and easy. They both take completely opposite approaches in a way that suits their natural voice, and it pays off for both. This is why I honestly don't feel you can ever have a "best" musician once you cross a certain line of mastery. Everyone becomes a master of their own sound in different ways.

Harry Belafonte is the one who got the ball rolling on this project. All Michael Jackson did was help co write the song with Lionel Ritchie because Stevie Wonder could not commit at the time. Quincy Jones stepped in and was able to get all the people you see in that room together at one time. But everyone helped in their own way. I believe the studio they used was owned by Kenny Rogers, he let them use it for this project.

The great Harry Belafonte got this thing together. Lionel Richie and MJ wrote a lot of the song, produced by Quincy Jones
@sopdox

Bob Geldof, a British musician (his band was called. Boomtown Rats) saw news footage of drought and famine stricken Ethiopia. He was moved to do something to help the people of Ethiopia. He got together with Midge Ure of the band Ultravox and in the space of less than two months they coordinated musicians, got a song written and recorded it in time for Christmas. The song was called “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” The song was a massive hit and proceeds went to help Ethiopia. Watch that video. They grabbed anyone that was in London at the time to sing and record the video. Kool & The Gang happened to be in London and even they are in the video. After seeing what the Brits pulled off, Harry Belafonte decided that the Americans needed to help as well. Collaborating with Quincy Jones, Lionel Richie and MJ, they got to writing. They decided the only way to get all those famous people together was after the American Music Awards show. After the awards they all filed into the music studio to record. The one artist who refused to participate was Prince (but he contributed a song to the album). Other reactors have asked why wasn’t Whitney Houston there. She isn’t in this because nobody knew who she was yet. Her first hit came a few months later (although her auntie, Dionne Warwick, is singing in the video.) Famously, there was a sign put on the entrance saying “check your egos at the door.” We Are The World was a massive hit. The heavy metal community felt slighted because they weren’t asked to participate. Ronnie James Dio (one of the best voices to ever exist in any genre), put together a heavy metal version called Stars (also worth watching). The union of massive stars to support a cause set the ball rolling for Live Aid, a massive one day music festival on 2 continents. London and Philadelphia were the stages. Live Aid was simulcast on MTV, ABC, and radio stations and other outlets across the globe. This concert paved the way for Farm Aid, which was a gathering of mostly country artists to raise money to help America’s farmers, most of whom live in poverty. There have been updated versions of We Are The World for different causes over the years.

Cyndi Lauper is the woman with wild hair, and Bruce Springsteen is the man that was singing w Stevie Wonder. There are too many legends on this track to list here, but there is a video on YT that has the times tagged for each artist and lists them in the description. Ray Charles is the older man sitting at the piano toward the end. His music is amazing, and there is a great movie made about his life called "Ray" that stars Jamie Foxx as Ray Charles.

Since I'm an old boomer and was already graduated high school when this was released in 1985 I can give you some background from a lived experience. There was a famine in Africa at the time due to drought and hundreds of thousands of children were dying. No government stepped in so Quincy Jones and Lionel Richie came up with this idea and MJ helped write the words so he wasn't as involved as the history has rewritten to make it his baby. QJ and LR were the masterminds of this . QJ was conducting. It was after the American Music Awards that they all attended and the studio was in Hollywood so they all went after the show. They all skipped the parties and the festivities afterwards to get this done and it went on till the sun came up the next day. When you guys didn't even notice Stevie until the second time he was singing I sort of knew you just didn't know who the white people were but the black people too. It all about your age so don't take that as an insult. When you see the people on the list I'm about to put on here you will be surprised that you know most of them but they were so young you don't recognize them. Here they are when they sang their solos and the rest of the group who didn't sing a solo. You will be really surprised when at 8:32 the dorky looking white guy next to Harry Belafonte is Dan Aykroyd from SNL he was doing the Blues Brothers with John Belushi at the time and they performed at the AMA I'm pretty sure. Here is the list: Lionel Richie - 0:26 Stevie Wonder - 0:39 Paul Simon - 0:43 The 1960's duo Simon and Garfunkel Bridge over Troubled Water protest song for the Vietnam War Kenny Rogers - 0:53 James Ingram - 0:59 Tina Turner - 1:06 Billy Joel - 1:13 Michael Jackson - 1:19 Diana Ross - 1:32 Dionne Warwick - 1:48 Willie Nelson - 2:02 Al Jarreau - 2:09 Bruce Springsteen - 2:15 Kenny Loggins - 2:21 King of the Movie tracks Footloose, Top Gun, Caddyshack He was also in the Bitty Gritty Band and did a Duet with Stevie Nicks from Fleetwood Mac Steve Perry - 2:28 The band Journey Daryl Hall - 2:36 Hall and Oates Huey Lewis - 2:48 Cyndi Lauper - 2:54 Kim Carnes - 3:02 Bob Dylan - 3:48 Ray Charles - 4:27 “We Are the World” Chorus (alphabetically) Dan Aykroyd Harry Belafonte Lindsey Buckingham Mario Cipollina Johnny Colla Sheila E. Please consider having a Gen-X participant when you review 80s music. The popularity of people like Bruce Springsteen (raspy white dude) and Cyndi Lauper (girl with the hair) were huge at the time. Prince wasn't there because of being too demanding and such. Having a person there who actually experienced this moment and the way MTV had such an impact on those audiences would really bring a fresh perspective to the discussion. I enjoyed your reaction and appreciation for that effort at the time. Take care!

You guys made past several legendary artists with no reaction at all. It's like you just watched this video for Michael Jackson. Every artist that participated and especially those that have solo parts are legendary and were super popular at the time this song was recorded. Many are still household names today.

I wouldn't catagirize this as a "Michael" song. Defeatsxthe purpose of the song.

I heard that MJ actually wanted to bow out because he was afraid that people would pay more attention to him instead of the message.

I loved and still love Michael Jackson BUT back in that time the other artist in the video were just as big if not bigger than Michael (again at the time the video was made) so it wasnt all about Michael

When music was real timeless talented music.....Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey etc....legends. All before internet, social media with all platforms these days cant sing anymore so they rap (cheap music to me) with empty lyrics, blabla money, material things, hate, negativity, violent etc.....sad where music is now From love and respect and fun to the modern clowns now Michael Jackson has the total package, style, music, dance, clothes etc.....global Star. Nowadays you dont have that and even a Beyonce, Usher, Chris Brown, Justin Bieber or Timberlake cant in his shadow.......all ALIEXPRESS VERSIONS
