You guessed it! This took place at Kenny Rogers' Hollywood recording studio. On the front door there was a written sign that said, "Check your egos at the door". The song was written on the spot by Michael Jackson and Lionel Ritchie and Quincy Jones arranged the music. Harry Belafonte was the one who thought of this and had his agent contact the agents of the other artists. Michael was the first call they made and the others jumped on board. Kenny Rogers was the only one who had a studio big enough to fit everyone. They stayed up until about 3am recording the song.

I not only have found a lot, and I mean a LOT, of people who have done reactions to this song, here in the U.S, no matter the age, race, sex, etc..., and each time they loved it but I have also found that a lot of other people and places that have redone this song, some with just kids from a different country singing at a community get together, another with young posable up and coming singers, and because of covid-19 I saw one that had singers and instrument players all from NY while in lockdown that put a video together by videoing themselves, sending that video to the editor, and the editor putting the videos together into one video, and those are just a few of them. So even though this song came out in 85 and at the time its purpose was to help with what was going on in Africa. It has not fallen off of getting the word out, that we as humans need to help each other, no matter who we are, and no matter who needs the help at their time of despair. After all "We Are The World".

Back than there still was that feeling of "togetherness"! To do something for others without earning a cent, because everything they earned with that song got into a fond for helping the people in Africa back than. Nowerdays the Artists really want to help, they want to change the world, but it's not going to work... because they are trying on theire own! For the record: USA vor Africa doesn't stand for the United States but for "United Support of Artists“! And back in the 80th they raised about $63 Million for humanitarian causes in Africa.

Famine in Ethiopia at this time was in the news constantly. A decade later it was Somalia, and three decades after that it's still Somalia and Ethiopia. Really it's just the entire region. The strange and frustrating thing is that the only real change in all that time is that it has gotten worse.

This was one of my favorite reactions. You don't need to know everyone to appreciate the quality. Kudos for knowing several of them, especially Hall and Oates. Not common for your age.

I was 9 when this came out in 1985. It was written by Micheal Jackson and Lionel Richie, who gathered famous musicians (and others) to record the song as a benefit for Africa, particularly Ethiopia, which was experiencing a severe famine at the time. (I will never forget the pictures of the starving skeletonlike kids with flies crawling on them. The phrase "Stop wasting food. There are children starving in Africa," which parents often use to git their children to clean their plates, took on an entirely new meaning )..Through the sale of the album, I think they raised about 65 million dollars, which they then donated to various charities that could provide relief. They didn't get any proceeds from it. I used to know all the lyrics, because our music teacher would always have us sing it in class. It always felt special to hear it played.

Yes Haze, a huge fundraiser/charity and awareness about the starving people in Ethiopia, Africa. 1985. The song was written by MJ and Lionel Richie, the guy you asked about. Quincy Jones directed, produced it. Unbelievable project, iconic. At the time it was the biggest thing and later that year there was also Live Aid for Africa. You know the concert where Queen performs? I know you've done a few reactors to that

This was written by Lionel Richie and Michael Jackson. They recorded it the evening of the Grammys in 1985, and many were irritated with Cyndi Lauper's bangles. During 1984-1985, many countries gathered groups of singers to record a song for African fundraisers. Amazing time! Next was Live Aid!! Go down the rabbit hole!

Haze, This was, I believe, 1985 and it was an EVENT! MTV promoted this for several days prior to it's airing. Almost every TV set in America was tuned in to MTV for this. That was when MTV was young and only did music videos 24/7. It was to help the people in Africa who were starving from drought. The video proved to be very successful as people from around the world contributed to USA for Africa. It would take you months just to listen to all the hit songs in that room. Almost everyone here are ICONS and made some of the best music in the last half of last century. There is a video showing the making of the video. All of the performers were at the Grammy's and came together afterward to record this in one night.
