U2 is one of the greatest bands to ever grace our collective ears. Amazing. And in my humble opinion, Bono never gets the credit for being a great lyricist. He is an incredible songwriter. Not to mention one of the best voices of any generation. We are not worthy, Bono, Edge, Adam, and Larry.

The live version of "Bullet the Blue Sky" from their from Rattle & Hum album stays true to the original while surpassing it, but this version has it's appeal. It's great to see mature artists engage in self-reflection rather than self-indulgence.

During the monologue in the middle of the song Bono referred to himself as a "boy of nineteen, na-na-na-na nineteen." For kids that grew up in the 80s that was a reference to the song "19" by Paul Hardcastle. It was an anti-war song where the title was the average of U.S. soldiers who were drafted for the Vietnam War.

U2 is like Pink Floyd, Roger Waters, Peter Gabriel or how David Bowie was. Every single tour features genius musicians and compositions, delivered through a complete theatrical experience, with themes and motifs and participation. It's rock at its best. That said, these guys make me realize how informed about current events and history a person needs to be to really fully 'follow' some U2 songs or visuals.

U2 is my favorite band. They have a catalogue of songs spanning over 40 years, the same 4 guys as when they started. They have never been shy about making political statements and their lyrics are very powerful. There are usually biblical references in many songs too. They are an amazing live band, their concerts are more than a bunch of songs, they take you on a journey with their show. Thanks for putting a spotlight on them. BTW, the band name U2 was partly inspired by an American spy plane, the U2. One was famously shot down over the Soviet union during the cold war.

When he mentioned "where you came from" in the middle monologue, he's referring to the fact that this band was essentially born out of "the Troubles" in Ireland in the mid to late 70's. That was during the time of the IRA which had actual car bombs that eventually started to see schoolchildren becoming targets. It was rough and unfortunately it's hard to find many in the US that know about it even though they were my age, 10 or so when it was happening, and was constantly in the news. Thank you for this version and your on point reaction. Take care!

Furthermore, to get a better reference about The Troubles in Ireland, check out a movie called Elephant. Not the Gus Van Sant version, albeit a great film, it's not about the Troubles in Ireland.

The band lived in Dublin and didn't ever experience the Troubles first hand. I married into a Northern Irish family and life there was totally different than that in the Irish Republic. The Troubles have never totally died and there are still things happening in Northern Ireland that don't get reported by the US news.

@@the_proteus_void I'm an American who moved to the UK 9 years ago and I was shocked about the news coming out of Northern Ireland because a lot of it isn't even reported in the right wing UK media that is very pro-Union and anti-Catholic. My husband's family is from the Omagh area, where that bombing happened in 98 that killed 29 people. I've walked down that street and have been to the memorial. I don't think the Troubles are ever going to fully die until the UK government pulls out of Northern Ireland. It is one of their last colonial possessions and they would rather send soldiers there to die than getting the hell out of there.

The best live band. Just epic live. And their staging & production innovations across the decades changed how tours are done. E.g. the heavy use of huge video screens on a tour…the B stage. We take such things for granted nowadays because they’re everywhere, but U2 basically invented & popularized them.

U2 is such a powerful band... and even more powerful live. Take a look at any of their available live performances, always great. A big suggestion to understand how potent they can be: Watch their performance at the 2002 Super Bowl Halftime show. It was the first Super Bowl after 9/11. The way these 4 guys from Dublin, Ireland captured the moment, understood how solemn it was, and honored America all at the same time... legendary.

The song Bullet the Blue sky was written about the war in El Salvador. Bono had visited the region and written the song about the civil war there. Now in this performance he changes a lot of the lyrics. This performance was just done on this tour. The conversation he is having with the boy is with himself. Bono at 19 is having a conversation with Bono aged 55 ( think he was 55 when they did this tour ) what would a 19 year old Bono think of himself at the age of 55. Bono obviously is very famous for his charity work and being a global activist. Which puts him in a position to be criticised it’s a fascinating performance. Great review .

They’ve been political since day one. This song was written after Bono’s time in El Salvador and seeing the destruction of the US engagement their. But over the years to talk about The Troubles in Ireland, Police violence, refugees, etc…. This a cool live version. I would suggest reacting anything from their ZooTV Live from Sydney show, or Slane Castle. 41 years and 14 albums of greatness. Every “era” of the band bringing something different. Achtung Baby is their crowning achievement as was the accompanying greatest tour of all time, ZooTV. Enjoy reacting to more. As many others have said, review their live performances, and Until the End of The World from Sydney is a must.

Sept 8, 2015 U2 was scheduled to play in Paris. Before they got on stage terrorists attacked different locations around the city of Paris killing up to 130 people. Obviously they had to cancel. Most died in a concert hall. The band playing when the attack happened in that concert hall was an American band called Eagle of Death Metal. I believe one member was killed by terrorist as well as 88 other concert goers. Months later U2 returned nd played Paris to help the city heal. They released a full concert video of that night. Even brought out the lead singer of that band from that tragic night and let him sing.

Great choice for a reaction. This performance comes from the Songs of Innocence and Experience, which was a relatively introspective tour, based on exploring lyrically and musically how they started out as a band and how their 'experience' has affected them politically, spiritually, and musically. This song is usually a pointed criticism 'outward', but I think this version matches the tour's theme.

Especially for this song, I love how they made the stage runway look like a military runway, with a helipad at the end. The theatricality, and the quintessential rock beat and guitar sounds, make this 100% rock star. If people wanted one example of one rock concert, to help them understand all rock concerts, this one isn't a bad choice. If you guys really like this, then you'd very likely also like how they set it up, with a song called 'October.' There are links to versions that show them attached. Live it was super cool. Also, if you like this you'll likely like Pink Floyd's Pulse live version of 'Sorrow.'

The bridge and the outro have taken a new form every year since.

Protest rock at its best. (Civil War from Guns and Roses is also brilliant.) I love the Slane Castle version of this when Edges guitar really screams on the solo and Bono names around 20 people who died in the IRA wars. Their Joshua Tree album is one of the greatest ever. Plenty other great stuff. Biggest rock band since the 80s.

The original inspiration for Bullet was the US involvement in the El Salvador civil war during the 80s. Those US fighter planes were the target for Bono’s anger, pelting the women and children who were that face of fear, running scared in the valley below.

Epic song. That bass line could go on forever without ever losing its smoothness. I never cared for much of their music after the "Joshua Tree" album, they kinda went mainstream commercial for my taste. I'd suggest "Pride", "Sunday Bloody Sunday", and "All I Want Is You".

I listen to their studio albums all the time, too, but their live versions are the best. U2 are, at heart & by their own admission, a live band. Their songs get “completed” when played live. Often I split the difference & just listen to their live albums & extended records with the live tracks.

While this song (written in the mid-late 80s) was about the wars and effect the US was having on places like El Salvador (the guitar sounds the way it does because Bono asked the guitarist to make it sound like bombs and turmoil in El Salvador) while getting rich and growing the divide of the rich and poor through capitalism, there is definitely a piece in almost all they write that is because of their childhoods. The middle talking part of this live version has evolved from American excess and greed in the original song to focusing on pain, war and protests to now a much more reflective look at where they are from where they came. U2 grew up on the north side of Dublin (the poorer side) during the height of The Troubles (the fight between the IRA and British/Protestant) in the 1970s. They witnessed bombings and fighting and violence growing up. They have been adamantly for neither side and have written songs about the British Army murdering protestors (Sunday Bloody Sunday) and the aftermath of bombing from the IRA (Raised by Wolves) both noting the pain of the people effected by a stupid war, not taking a side.

The original version was a commentary on the proxy wars between the US and the then USSR. It was originally written during the 80’s when the Cold War was still going on.
