The version of this on the "Rattle and Hum" album/videomovie is phenomenal. The song title/refrain speaks of the journey of life, a seeking that doesn't end. Even with Jesus, he's not finished. Life continues. Beautiful song.

You should check out the version with U2 and the Harlem gospel choir. The gospel choir version from Rattle and Hum is also beautiful.

Song is about finding faith and the challenges that provides in life . 3 of the members of u2 are famously born again Christian and have been the whole time they have been in the band. They found religion at a young age. This was from Glastonbury, a festival in England . The abbey is the church at the top of the hill looking over the festival site . A lot of religious history there The song at the end was moving on up by primal scream . Bono always throws snippets of other songs into u2 songs live . Primal scream we’re playing another stage at the same time u2 we’re playing , so it was just a nod to them .

They said from the beginning that this was a gospel song, even though it didn’t really sound like one the way they did it originally. You should see the version they did in Harlem with the mostly black church choir. It’s on Rattle and Hum. Amazing. 😎👍

This was U2‘s 2nd straight #1 single in 1987. Absolutely a gospel tune, not only about finding faith, but also recognizing that the faith that you found this far hasn’t been enough. U2 plays a lot with religious themes, positive and negative. as for the crowd singing the first verse and chorus, it’s something common at U2 gigs. It’s more or less the only song the band lets the crowd sing for them. So the while that might seem strange watching the performance isolated, as part of the entire show it fits and seems less abrupt

The part of the song that doesn't belong there is from "Come Together" by the band Primal Scream. The original song appears on the album "Screamadelica" and some would consider the album one of the all-time greats.

Many years ago, I read tge lyrical inspiration for this song was Saul's conversion to Paul on the roadvto Damascus and the events that followed- "I have scaled these city walls". You're right in the 3rd verse- you carried the cross..." is referencing Jesus. But the preceeding line- "you broke the bonds..." I believe he's referring to the Holly Ghost releasing Paul's chains and opening the jail cell. Thanks for the review. Very thoughtful.

Deep down he knows the truth and that he has always known the truth of the cross and that is why he feels shame. Rebellion, pride whatever preventing him from acceptance and peace. This life truly is a battle for our souls.

A very sub par video and performance, of a great song. Bono trying the old Queen trick of having the crowd sing the chorus completely bombed. Great song, a terrible visual image is burned in my brain of Bono standing there holding a mic and it's quieter than the intermission in the middle of the Godfather. Take this image away Mr.Lboyd!

@@ronyrontana9735 From what I've heard from Achtung Baby, Zooropa(?), it felt like they embraced the rock star life and tried to social commentary it versus pre-Achtung baby where it came off as much more heartfelt and soulful. Now, I am willing to admit I am wrong based on tunes sent my way...but from what I heard it sure sounded like the were heading opposite where they started....

This is a song about him losing his car keys....nah only joking, think you needed to listen to another one first, "where the streets have no name" is powerful song about the war in Ireland or maybe "New years day" both of these are ranked in the so called top 10 of U2 songs . There are a lot of their songs about topics close to Bono's heart this song can be taken 2 ways, about finding religion or finding love. There are so many great tracks off "The Joshua tree" album

I take it in a totally different direction than you did, friend. I see it as trans religious. Look again at the lyrics and song structure. It's a step by step through the evolution of worldviews. First material, then religion... he still hasn't found what he's looking for. Even after the part about believing and the cross, what's the next stanza? I still haven't found what I'm looking for. It's corroborated by the last phrase of the performance "out of the darkness, our love shines on, our love shine on, our love shines on". Love, above all else. The next step above religion. That's the way I interpreted it ✌️
