Amazing album, and it came out at the perfect time. In 1978 many of the big rock bands were in decline, disco was king and some people were saying rock was dead. This album came out and Van Halen told the world that rock and roll was doing just fine.

And on your moral question, if I had to choose one begging is the moral choice because by definition the alternative is taking what someone else earned and you didn't. This 1st Van Halen album from 1978 is all killer... no filler... U can check the whole thing out! 🔥🔥🤘🤘One thing is u gotta do the instrumental intro 'Eruption' along w/ the song 'You really got me' (cover of The Kinks) which were the first radio single from the record. There's also another cover 'Ice cream man' (which is a fun song w/ quite a bit of sexual innuendo 😂) David Lee Roth was not a big star when the record came out... In fact, there were suggestions to replace him in Van Halen cos he was not the best singer. He once said his lyrics were usually about getting back against his haters... "Runnin' with the devil" was definitely on that road. Years later, Roth allegedly found himself rich & famous, and hating where he was at... A friend allegedly asked him how his band could get signed like Van Halen in the early 80's, and Roth's reply was weary... he said he thought once he had fame & money, he could put his problems behind him. But he found out that it was when his problems truly began... Van Halen was a party band publicly; privately, they were a mess of egos, infighting, alcohol & drugs... Their split w/ David Lee Roth in 1985 shocked their fans, but the band's insiders were surprised that it didn't come sooner... Roth and Eddie Van Halen were on 2 different worlds, and it just didn't work anymore. Classic case of burnout.

It’s a classic debut album. It changed the way rock guitarists wanted to sound, dress, started the Eddie Van Halen cult, school of guitar playing, and the whole 1980s California hair band movement. That said, it was a great album, and I’d play the whole thing. “Eruption” always leads into “You Really Got Me” though, so you have to play those two together, please. P.S. Jesus and Buddha both told their followers to sell everything they own, give the money to the poor, and go town to town preaching the Word, with nothing but a cloak to wear and a begging bowl for their meals. So I suppose I’d rather be a beggar than a thief.

When they wrote this they might of been "starving musicians". How starving they were I don't really know but some musicians, actors or actresses are more then starving and willing to beg, borrow or steal to make it in life.
