Great Reaction! He actually was singing, " If my rhyme was a drug I'd sell it by the gram!"🙃 I am always amused when people think Vanilla Ice is a " One Hit Wonder" This song was such an explosive single hit for him it caused a lot of people to not take time to realize he was more than a " One Hit Wonder"... Vanilla Ice has 25 hit songs, 6 studio albums, 1 live album, 2 compilation albums, 3 video albums, 24 music videos and a remix album... but " Ice Ice Baby" was the FIRST hip hop single to top the billboard charts. It helped diversify hip hop by introducing it to the mainstream white audience and you could say the rest is history! Vanilla Ice ( a.k.a. Rob Van Winkle) Is not only a rapper, singer, producer and actor he is also a construction contractor and has a t.v. show " The Vanilla Ice Project" Where he does home improvement reno's so he can " flip and sell" homes.

I think Ice was behind his time, so to speak. He hit it big in 1990, about the same time that gangsta rap did, which made all that crazy clothing and choreographed dancing look ridiculous. A year or two earlier, Ice might have been criticized less.

This shit was tight. The music, the lyrics, the beat, the moves. All of it. Was there in the clubs when it came out. Very little got people moving the way this song did. So he was not ACTUALLY from the streets as he implied. He still knocked this one out of the park. He sampled without credit and it cost him but the song is his.

That's the thing that kind of gets lost in the history of Hip Hop... there were so many people responsible for bringing it to the mainstream and perpetuating the sound...paving the way for others. That 85-95 span is pure gold... Run DMC, Beastie Boys, NWA, Public Enemy, Vanilla Ice, MC Hammer, Cypress Hill... Tribe... even Rage... and I know I'm missing a ton of others.... But everybody was doing their thing.

@@fumblebunny1993 Well said, Fumble Bunny! I find that young people these days are far more likely to reach back for, listen to, and enjoy "our" music than my students in past decades. People bash millenials and Gen. Z'ers, but I find them to be far more eclectic and accepting in their musical choices and attitudes than their parents. Glad they're making such great choices for entertainment! It's a hard word, and music gets us through it. Freddie Mercury's reaction after hearing Ice, Ice, Baby. It's a scenario we can now imagine courtesy of Mercury's longtime assistant Peter "Phoebe" Freestone, who recounted his version of events in a blog post recently added to his official site. As Freestone writes, Mercury actually thought he was listening to "Under Pressure" at first - and as reality set in, he seemed bemused more than angry. "He carried on eating his breakfast and suddenly stopped, frowning. I thought there was a problem with his food but he said ‘no,'" he recalled. "He started listening intently and couldn’t believe his ears. He was smiling when he said that he couldn’t believe what he was hearing ... a blatant ripoff." After calling manager Jim Beach, Mercury apparently "left it at that, always remembering that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery" - although the way things shook out wasn't always flattering for Vanilla Ice, who soon saw the chart-topping era of his career implode in a cloud of embarrassing personal revelations and Ninja Turtles, and would spend years facing assorted mockery for the way he'd handled the "Under Pressure" situation. The members of Queen weren't always the kindest when talking about "Ice Ice Baby," which was ultimately co-credited to the band as well as their "Under Pressure" collaborator David Bowie. "A white rapper from Florida ... great," quipped drummer Roger Taylor at one point, and in 1991, guitarist Brian May admitted his view of the whole thing had been jaundiced "because rap doesn't really appeal to me." After a couple of years, however - and a lawsuit settled to the band's satisfaction - May's feelings had softened somewhat. In a 1993 interview with Howard Stern, he insisted there were "no hard feelings" because Ice "settled up" - and ultimately, the song might have exposed their music to a new audience anyway. "In the end, it was very good for us because a lot of people went 'ah, so that's where that comes from,'" May noted. "So a lot of people who never would have heard of Queen heard of Queen because of that."

"Ice Ice Baby" was way more than just a CLASSIC song back in the day. Ice was 23 years old in 1990, he was 19 years old when he first performed "Ice Ice Baby" ((("Ice Ice Baby" was the B side of the hit song he had back then, "Play that Funky Music"))) and 16 years old when he wrote "Ice Ice Baby!" When "Ice Ice Baby" went viral WORLDWIDE people in other countries such as China, Africa, Venezuela, Cuba, Russia, etc ... were all singing and dancing and partying to this worldwide hit from the United States and the white boy who was multi talented! He never did receive the recognition for any of it bc haters just wanted to make fun of him, etc ... They were jealous and I bet they're really jealous now bc he still makes money off "Ice Ice Baby" to this very day. Now who else can say that the Hip Hop genré? Don't worry I'll wait ❤️ Ice was a trailblazer/forerunner when Hip Hop exploded on the scene back in the 90s - he paved the way for countless Hip Hop rappers you've seen, even to this very day. I'm so glad I was part of that amazing era! This is to a Wikipedia link that tells of Ice's other hits he had back then, it's just that none of them went viral worldwide back then but they were still hits back in tha day. So, he was NOT a one hit wonder, contrary to popular opinion. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Best_of_Vanilla_Ice We love you Ice, you are an icon from the 90s and will be one forever. Let folks talk smack about you but your true fans know better, we don't listen to their crap, WE'VE ALL GOT YOUR BACK ICE - "Word to ya motha" We love you Ice ❣️ God bless you boo❣️

Not me. The song was huge but I was 8 in 1990 & I listened to a radio station that didn't play top 40 (in the car my mom played oldies & my dad played classical). I'd never seen this video before today! My family didn't have cable (long story) and once the internet let us look for videos I never thought to look for this song.

IDK if they've never heard/seen any Jackson family members' music. These two are born and raised in Gary, Indiana 😁

On the one hand I'm ashamed that I scorned without listening to rap/hip hop when it was developing. (I'm 71, raised a Good Catholic and was offended by the language & themes.) But it FINALLY dawned on me when it was a WORLDWIDE art form that I had to be the one who was wrong. The good thing is discovering all the great stuff I missed before.

I love these guys. I love that as young African Americans their minds, hearts, and ears seem open to all types of music. That's just enough to make this 49 year old Caucasian cry!!! Love you boys.
