The effect on the vocals is a flanger. The effect was originally a studio effect invented by Les Paul. They used reel-to-reel tapes back then and they found that by putting a little thumb pressure on the flange of the feed reel, it would slow it down for a second and the pitch would drop a little. Then when released the slight stretch in the tape made the pitch go up a little. So they alternately pressed and released the flange of the reel to make the effect. It was later reproduced with electronic means.

Billy’s voice, I think, has been compressed and flanged. I might be wrong about that, but I think I’m in the ballpark.

This song was SO damn fun to dance to. And I love Frank Beard's drumming on this. Heard It On the X from yet another album I don't think you've heard anything from yet, Fandango, is amazing and somewhat autobiographical.

Germany 🇩🇪, 1988 or '89, I saw ZZ Top for the 3rd time! These guys can Rock! They make a lot noise for a 3 piece band! I'm aware of the wicked successful 3 piece bands out there, but I'm saying is These guys don't have a stage full of gimmicks. There are a bunch of speakers and Billy wailing on his guitar. Great reaction!

Most of the "licks and riffs" would come about organically, naturally while just picking a 3 or 4 chord progression and jamming until something emerges from the deep. Music is magic. It is the only supernatural thing in the universe.
