ZZ Top is one of the greatest bands of all time. They had a style, a sound all their own. Check out their 80s videos, they are truly unique. "Sharp Dressed Man", "Gimme All Your Lovin"", "Legs", "Sleeping Bag", "Rough Boy"... so many great hits! They are also known of course, for their beards... except for the drummer, whose name, ironically, is Beard. This is kind of southern-bluesy-grunge-rock.

Texas blues/rock/funk/gospel is the genre. In other words, they span genres. But based in the blues, 10000%. These mofo's were my idols growing up in El Paso. I've seen 'em about 7 times thru the years, always a killer show.

ZZ Top are from Texas, debuted in 1971 as a rock trio w/ Billy Gibbons (vocals & guitar), Dusty Hill (bass & vocals) and Frank Beard (drums) ...They never had a 'genre'. They even made pop songs in their career... They were all about fun music and not taking themselves too seriously. Since the late 70's, they were known as the band w/ 2 bearded guys (Gibbons and Hill) and 1 guy (Beard) w/ no beard 😂😂 Sadly, bassist Dusty Hill passed away in 2021... 😪 and ZZ Top have been touring w/ a session bass player. The story began when Texas native guitarist Billy Gibbons was a teenager in the late 60's and his band opened for Jimi Hendrix Experience on tour... Jimi Hendrix, the legendary guitarist, called Billy Gibbons his favorite guitar player and told all his peers about him (You know Gibbons was good if Jimi Hendrix was asking him for tips on playing slide guitar!) Sadly, Jimi Hendrix died in 1970 before ZZ Top would release their 1st album. Billy Gibbons would go on to form ZZ Top w/ Frank Beard and Dusty Hill... By 1975, ZZ Top had released a few albums and started to have success by touring constantly... early songs like 'La Grange'... 'Tush'... 'Jesus just left Chicago' ... 🔥🔥were hits on radio. In 1977, drummer Frank Beard was having addiction problems and decided to go to rehab, and the other 2 decided to take a break and wait... 2 years later, Frank Beard was back and when Gibbons and Hill returned, they both had long beards from not shaving for years 🧔🧔When they rehearsed, they looked very striking... so they decided to keep the beards for the rest of their career, releasing the album 'Deguello' in 1979 and carrying on into the 80's... In 1983, the band got into electronic music and beats, and their album 'Eliminator' incorporated pop music into the ZZ Top sound... They also made music videos for MTV, and w/ their look and sound... the album was a huge success, selling 10 million copies in the US. ZZ Top followed up w/ 'Afterburner' in 1985 and 'Recycler' in 1990. Their hits from the 80's included - 'Gimme all your loving'... 'Legs'... 'Sharp-dressed man'... 'Got me under pressure'... 'Rough boy'... "My head's in Mississippi"... 'Velcro fly'🔥🔥 ZZ Top released more albums in the 90's, but did not have the same success... After 2003, the band focused on touring and stayed relevant in the 21st century... Their last album was 'La Futura' in 2012. They celebrated a 50-year career as a band in 2021 before Dusty Hill passed away.

I think that reference to turning muddy water to wine is a double entendre because it invokes Muddy Waters, whom ZZ Top loved and owes a huge musical debt to, and this song overall has a very Muddy Waters slow blues feel to it, but it's also a reference to the Bible where when King Herod is deciding what to do with Jesus before handing him over to Pontius Pilate, he has heard that Jesus does miracles and he was mocking him and commanding him to turn the water in his chalice to wine if he can do stuff like that. And of course Jesus refused to do it.

One of their more recent songs, its based off 25 Lighters, a Houston Rap/Hip Hop artists song. Story Goes, ZZ Tops recording studio was under renovation, so they used another one that some younger artists recorded at. They spent a little time together and ZZ Top came out with this. Pretty badass if ya ask me. (Not that anyone did, lol) 😊 I think you would Seriously enjoy it!

The studio side of their next album ‘Fandango!’ Is maybe the best side they ever did, although there’s plenty there to offend everyone these days too. Uncensored. And “Just Got Paid”.

ZZ Top sort of defies the usual classifications. Their lyrics are Texas through and through, their blues and gospel wouldn't be out of place in Chicago, and their rock is Southern-fried, but with a hardness that isn't usually seen.
