It was our first time in Korea, but what really struck us most about Korea? Is it the friendly people? The food? The traditional way of life? How safe is Korea? Find out what we had to say.
Wow, Busan, Seoul, Gyeonju and more - what an AMAZING country.
We summarise it here, but we can't wait to come back.
Let us know what surprised you most about Korea?

Let me explain why towels in Korea are so small. It's due to the intense heat and humidity during the summer. If you use a larger towel, it quickly becomes soaked and starts to smell. Therefore, instead of using a large towel for a week, people prefer to use a small one once and wash it.

I don't know about heat and humidity, but yes koreans use towel only once and use new one, so use 2 towels a day or more.

At the korean restaurant..you can get more side dishes(반찬) for free.. That is Korean restaurants rule so if you want side dishes more...ask the master. You always can get side dishes for free.

You are right that Seoul has a great cafe culture. No one rushes you out. Also safety is a big issue. You can leave your laptop at a table and no one will steal it. I have not been to Korea in a while, but I am very surprised you would say their pastries are better than French pastries. Perhaps it is because Koreans strive for excellence and are willing to be innovative with food.

In Korea (and Japan), the size is small because several small towels are used once and then washed after showering. There will be big towels in the hotel.

regarding the towels, koreans (I am korean) do not reuse shower towels more than once. Once you use it once, it goes to the laundry. I know that's not how it's done in the US, where I currently live. I've seen my roomate from college reuse his larger towel for at least a week.

Koreans can be very accommodating even when they don’t speak English. They have a lot of nunchi, which is the ability to read a situation. So that may explain why things can go very smoothly despite a language barrier. They still want to work with you even if you don’t speak the language.

I am not sure if Julia knew, but the Korean lady styled her hair in a traditional Korean braid. It looked beautiful and definitely better than if left down. You both looked great in hanbok. I am glad you tried cold noodles (a unique Korean dish).

I totally agree with Julia about commonalities between Korean and Italian culture. Both cultures are family oriented and passionate about food. When you were in Busan did you ride the sky capsules?

@@ndychung007 I hadn't thought about the peninsula. They are also both family oriented. Their cuisines are both peasant cuisines that focus on quality ingredients. Now in modern Korean cuisine (mainly street food) there is a ton of cheese. Ironically it is very expensive to buy cheese in Korean grocery stores. One last commonality is spice (though in Italy I think that is only in Calabria). Also Italy has colatura (Italian fish sauce) and Korea uses fish sauce. Both cultures love noodles (invented in China). The list goes on.....

Korean groceries are not cheap.A lot of ready made food is cheaper. Ironically eating out is very affordable. Regarding street food I think you went to the tourist traps - there are more affordable markets. If you go to Mom and Pop shops you can get really good deals because all the banchan is included and the food is great.

I am Korean. There is one thing foreigners misunderstand. Please eat rice with a spoon. Westerners know that Chinese and Japanese people eat rice with chopsticks, and Koreans also eat rice with chopsticks. It's wrong idea . In particular, bibimbap and fried rice must be eaten with a spoon. Because it's not sticky. Think about it. Would you rather eat rice with a spoon or chopsticks? We are not fools like the Chinese and Japanese. Please give up your obsession with chopsticks. Spoons, forks, and chopsticks are all just tools for eating food. And at least eating rice with a spoon is basic manners in Korea. then have good trip.🌹♥

Haha. The towel thing…. i am also used to large bath towels but technically i do not use all the potential of the big towel, meaning there are parts of the towel still very dry after use. And technically i can mostly dry myself with a large hand towel. Now if you have a lot of hair and tend to thoroughly dry your hair with the towel than thats a different story.

If the aesthetic in Korea is good, prepare to be surprised with the aesthetic in Japan. Japan take it to another level. Food presentation is taken very seriously in Japan. Just that there are no rubbish bins and a lot of rules to follow even how to queue. 😂😂😂 Japan have the salted bread as well. Look up Pain Maison in Ginza.

How much did they rip you off to rent those outfits? 😂😂😂 Pretty much in all Asian countries drinking is king and Korea is the King of Kings. Koreans per capital drink more than any other country including Russia. When you first meet a Korean, the first three questions are: Where you from? How old are you? and What is your liquor gage (How much can you drink)?
