Shine on you crazy diamond isn’t a song.💎 It’s an experience. God bless Syd Barrett. And Pink Floyd.
@christianandersen8931
@christianandersen8931 2 жыл бұрын
This song is a tribute to Syd Barrett, who founded Pink Floyd, but left the band due to psychological problems (and too many acid trips). There are a lot of references to Syd in the lyrics. E.g. Piper is a reference to the first album " Piper at the Gates of Dawn" where Syd was the driving force in the band.

My favorite Floyd song. Bought the album the day after it was released. Put it on the turntable and was amazed at how great an album it was. The slow fade in and build into the main part of the song is still amazing all these years later. A beautiful and heart felt "Love Letter" to their fallen leader Syd Barret.

Good on you, doing the whole side, just as Floyd meant us all to listen to their albums. And providing the lyrics too! What a great morning you're giving to your faithful and new watchers!!! The lp cover, on your screen, shows 2 (music industry) businessmen making "a deal"... One is always BURNING the other (and the stuntman actually got injured doing the photo shoot!). Others may write about the famous founder, Syd Barrett, and his several connections to the writing of the album, by the incomparable Roger Waters... With this kind of content, you will continue to see your subs go rapidly up, regardless of being speechless, or what goes on in the comments!

This song conveys a lot, but I found that, after listening to the whole album through, it made even more sense. It helped that I already knew the story of Syd, but I did not know the album directly addressed him. But the highs and lows, placid moments that slowly, slowly build back up to intense, almost panicky episodes, all came together for me after I heard it all.

Took the words right out of my keyboard. There are a lot of bands that write music, but I wouldn't necessarily call them artists. What Pink Floyd created here, is as much art as anything I've ever experienced. Seems the older I get, the more clearly I can see the level of sophistication in their work.

When they originally recorded this song in the studio a homeless looking man came into the studio control room off the street. He said nothing and quietly watched. Eventually one of the older engineers asked the guy next to him "You know who that is don't you?". No who is it? That's Sid. Founding member Sid Barrett came into the studio to watch. Sid left the band because of mental health problems and spent a chunk of his life institutionalized. Pink Floyd was a very different band with him than without. This song was a tribute to him.

I'm a bit late, but I have a secret: I've listen to this tracks maybe easily THOUSANDS of time, I'm a HUGE fan listening daily to Pink Floyd for years... And... ...I cry every time, I still have my wet eyes now... And it's harder and harder, because I also love Syd Barrett, and those are tough lyrics when you "know the story".

Everytime I _listen_ to Pink Floyd I hear something new. This time, I heard the opening guitar piece as an alien species talking to us. (That perfect first bend-note still chills me.) Asking us how we getting on. A conversational "how are you?" And the (musical) response is "Um, ok. But we possibly have some issues." And then the song shifted to an individual's life and aspiration and meaning and hope and all that kind of trivial stuff. Oh Pink Floyd does things to your mind, f'sure. (And I'm loving seeing how you feel the music too, rather than just listening to it.)

Moin (-; Sarah, I haven't read all the comments and maybe it has already been written... The song is dedicated to Syd Barret, he was the founder of Pink Floyd, wrote the first songs of them and played the guitar. After becoming more and more addicted to drugs, David Gilmoure took over the guitar part and also wrote songs. However, this song was mostly written by Roger Waters and is dedicated in memory of the genius and friend Syd Barret who died shortly after recording. What a great bow for a friend, I think. Thanks for sharing and many greetings from Hamburg.

I started this journey 50 years ago with them...in about a 10 year span, the put out what is arguably the best 5 albums ever created, Meddle, Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You were Here, Animals and The Wall, there isn't a bad song to be found anywhere there. After The Wall they were done and their official last album, The Final Cut is really a Roger Waters solo album, worth checking out too is their first album, Piper at the Gates of Dawn and really their first single Arnold Layne is about a creepy cross dresser who steals woman's clothes from clothing lines, that's how unusual they were but there are many strange and weird songs like "Several Species of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together in a Cave and Grooving with a Pict" ....and the story of original member Syd Barrett is just to much to get into but he is a wonderful sad and tragic figure. Really Pink Floyd is a deep rabbit hole but it's worth exploring.

I concur with your assessment Sarah. Absolutely beautiful song. I've liked it since it came out and still like it today .what is new to me is realizing how much I enjoy watching someone else like it. Thank you. Dare say decades from now you will still enjoy it as much as you do now , maybe even more than now.
