The real-life sadness in this piece is immeasurable. They lost their leader to mental illness at a time when mental illness was the kiss of death. Admittedly, they didn’t know how to help Syd, so they turned inward and expressed their collective loss through music.

The song was written about Syd Barrett, one of the founding members of Pink Floyd. After their first album his behaviour became increasingly erratic due to a mixture of hallucinogenic drug intake and assumed mental illness (he was never actually diagnosed with anything at that point, but it was assumed he was ill), and he was effectively ejected from the band because it became impossible to work with him. 8 years after the release of their first album, they were recording ‘Shine On...’ when a bald, fat man entered the studio that they didn’t recognise. They carried on working for a while when one of them realised it was Syd, his appearance drastically changed. He had turned up out of the blue during the recording of the song they’d written about him. Strange but true.

actually later in life he was diagnosed with schizophrenia that had gone untreated for well over half his lifetime... which explains his musical genius and madness.

@@danthedobermann Not quite true. They drafted in David Gilmour as a second guitarist as Syd's playing became erratic and sometimes sporadic at live gigs. Soon they simply stopped picking him up and taking him to gigs so he was effectively out of the band.

My father, a great symphonic music lover, played by the best orchestras in the world, came to my room one day to listen to this musical piece with me. Its final verdict, this band deserved its place with the greatest composers of all time. Coming from him, it was a huge compliment. Subsequently, I played him (Dark Side Of The Moon) in full. He particularly liked the last 4 songs of this album, from (Us And Them) to (Eclipse), plus of course, (The Great Gig In The Sky).
