'Phantom Lord' was written by Dave Mustaine w/ James Hetfield writing the lyrics... this final version was slightly extended from the 1982 demo w/ Dave (and Ron McGovney on bass)... James said that he was trying to write lyrics like Judas Priest (Hence, the stuff on "Kill 'em all" was similar to Priest's style lyrics on "Metal gods"... 'Steeler'... or 'Solar Angels'...) The controversy was that Dave Mustaine recently claimed that the material on "Kill 'em all" was primarily written by him and James Hetfield... Lars Ulrich was given partial credit for arrangements... but Dave insisted that Lars in that first year was not a proficient musician and did not contribute much; he theorized that James gave him credit as his partner in Metallica. Scott Ian (guitar) of Anthrax recalled in 1986 that both James and Cliff Burton were considering firing Lars from the band - this was after 'Master of Puppets' was released, and the 2 had an idea of where they wanted to go musically and wanted someone like Dave Lombardo (drummer of Slayer) w/ some better musical skills. Of course, Cliff Burton's death in the fall of 1986 ended those plans... Lars took over the band after, cos neither James nor Kirk Hammett were in any shape (from alcohol and the trauma) to handle the growing business side of Metallica. It was Lars who arranged the auditions for a new bass player and his friend Brian Slagel (head of Metal Blade Records) who helped get Jason Newsted the audition & job in Metallica (Newsted's band Flotsam & Jetsam was on Metal Blade Records) so that the band could go back on tour.

I saw them on their Ride the Lightning tour. It was a small venue with only about 200-300 people. During the opening acts Armored Saint and WASP, they were just walking around talking to everyone. Its a shame their music changed into sing alongs like Enter Sandman and Whiskey in the Jar. They were so good at thrash metal.

@@BigSmoke-bu6ib Whiskey is a Jar is much older than that, my friend. The song has been around long before Thin Lizzy. Dont quote me, but I believe The Dubliners were the first group to record it and make the song known outside of Ireland. Any ways, weather or not the song is good wasn't the point. The point was that they moved away from their thrash sound, which made me have no interest in their music anymore.

Yeah basically what happened was Metallica (with Dave Mustaine) drove across the country from San Francisco to New York City to record their debut album. Tensions were already high between Dave and the rest of the band due to Dave's erratic behavior when he drank. The band were all heavy drinkers, but Dave was a mean drunk. One time Dave and James got into a fist fight, another time Dave poured beer on former bassist Ron McGovney's bass, wrecking his instrument. The straw that broke the camel's back was while Dave was driving at night, he nodded off and nearly crashed their van. As soon as Metallica got to New York, James and Lars give Dave a greyhound ticket and they kick him out of the band. Dave tells the band "Not to use his shit" and they do it anyways. Jamesre-writes the Mechanix and it becomes The Four Horsemen and he also re-wrote the lyrics to Jump in the Fire, the original version was about having sex with a girl (kind of like The Mechanix lol). For the Phantom Lord, Dave used some of the riffs that he wrote for the Megadeth song "This Was My Life" If you're interested, there's some footage and recordings out there from when Dave was in the band. There's a concert from March 19th, 1983 on youtube that has Dave in the band. it's the earliest known footage of Metallica performing live. there's also the No Life til Leather demo, which is early versions of 7 songs from Kill Em All, including Metallica's version of The Mechanix
@eraigames
@eraigames Жыл бұрын
I'd just like to add that from what Dave and the other guys in Metallica have said over the years, it sounds like James and Lars are rather hard to get along with and that probably combined horribly with Dave as a mean drunk. Also I've read that the guys had fundamentally different approaches to writing music. Dave seems to want to use his guitar playing as therapy and builds his songs around insanely difficult riffs to push himself, while Metallica builds more cohesive songs around concepts.

The first Metallica-song I heard was "Fight Fire With Fire", somewhere in autumn 1984. I think it was on the "Monday Rock Show" on BFBS and it was like a musical revelation to me. Got the album for Christmas and listened to it on a nearly daily basis for more than a year. The album "Ride the Lightning" might be the reason why Thrash Metal became my favourite subgenre. Bought "Kill 'em All" a few weeks later and liked it, but it doesn't come close to RTL. When MOP came out, I also liked it, but never as much as RTL. Their last album I bought was AJFA, on which the non-audible bass was a mega-disappointment. People who have heard Jason's bass-playing/-sound on Flotsam and Jetsam's debut "Doomsday For the Deceiver" might understand what I mean. I was also not too fond of the drum-sound and the somewhat "dry" sound in general. In addition to this, I found most of the songs less enjoyable than on their previous album, "One" being the exception to the rule. There are at least 10 Thrash Metal albums released in 1988 which I like better than AJFA. The only Metallica-album I still listen to nowadays is "Ride the Lightning", which to me is still one of the best metal albums ever.

Thankfully, we have some footage of Metallica in their early days and can experience how incredible the band was live in their early years w/ late bassist Cliff Burton... They don't perform like that any more (sad to say)... Metallica had better finances and support to film some of their concerts in clubs and in Europe (w/ the help of then-label Music For Nations). Unfortunately, we have little footage of Megadeth in their early days... they had fewer resources at the time... One 1984 show was filmed w/ Slayer's Kerry King on guitar... Their original drummer Gar Samuelson was a talent, but he was fired in 1987 and passed away in 1999... Chris Poland (guitar) was only w/ them for a couple of years (One concert filmed in 1986). The best early Megadeth footage was from 1988, filmed in Essen, W. Germany... w/ David Ellefson (bass), Jeff Young (guitar) and Chuck Behler (drums) - which lasted only 1 album cycle... Dave Mustaine was truly talented, despite his drug abuse... Slayer's Kerry King recalled seeing Mustaine play as a teen and was awed at how Dave was playing leads and not even looking at his fingers (he was glaring at the audience 😠)

Dave Mustaine didn't steal this track, he wrote it when he was in Metallica. Unlike Metallica, when Kirk left Exodus for Metallica Exodus didn't use any of his material on their releases outside of "The Impaler" which they didn't use until 2004 for a tribute to Paul Baloff after he died.

How did Mustaine "steal from Metallica" when this was one of the songs he was involved in writing? It's literally his material. Honestly, if Metallica wanted to be completely done with Dave, then they should have purged ALL songs and material he was involved in writing and ONLY used their own exclusive original ideas and music after Kirk joined the band. The controversy about "who wrote what/who owns what" during this era is getting absurd.

I know right? This was one of the songs that Dave Mustaine wrote during his short time with Metallica, so for people who don't know what the hell they are talking about and don't bother to look at the songwriting credits and spout off some asinine nonsense is just so dumbfounding to me.

Ok, Metallica had just singed to Megaforce….and pretty much Road tripped to New York to record their debut album…this might get a little long…but is the reality of the situation. They arrived in NY and realized they couldn’t continue with Dave. We know what happened next and they were in contract to record an album. They didn’t have time to rewrite an album, but did rewrite at least some of it. Dave didn’t steal anything…the song Mechanix that ended up on Megadeths Debut “killing is my Business…and Business is Good” was the exact version he fully wrote that was on Metallicas early KEA demos…nothing ripped off. Nobody should hold anything against Metallica, they had no choice at the time. They were living literally in their practice space, and Mustaine had every right to use the Machanix

Well lyrically(and musically) the band was less mature, remember that when Kill Em All came out half of these guys were not even 20 years old, and lyrics were even worse if we can put it in a way, during the few months Dave was in the band, as most of what he wrote was about girlfriends. James re-wrote some of the lyrics after Dave was no longer with them. And speaking about Dave, there is always controversy surrounding him, every band member in Megadeth has left or been fired because of arguments with him, and there are always his groupies commenting about how bad Metallica is and that the few good things were all written by Dave... truth is half of Kill Em All is a collaboration between the 4 guys.

The hook band for me was not Metallica, it was Queensryche that made me turning to a metalhead from a real metal-hater. And the album was of course 'Operation: Mindcrime' - the album that made the band deserve the 'Pink Floyd of heavy metal' title.

Just wait until you hear "No Remorse"! The lyrics of this album are all true, no matter how horrible and Metallica was the only band that had the guts to scream it in your face!!!!! But don't take me wrong, I love your channel and you should really try Limp Bizkit! People either love them or hate them! Haters try to stick them in the "new rock" category, but they are comparable to no one! It's how I get my aggression out😂

The first Metallica song I ever heard was 'For Whom the Bell Tolls'. "Ride the Lightning", "Kill 'em All" and "Master of Puppets" were the best albums the band ever produced, and it was when they were young. There are a few gems after that, but the band got too commercial and they really lost their way. Do they have umpteen million views every month? Yes. Is that really a barometer of how good all their other music is? Absolutely not.

@@g54b95 I'm also seriously getting sick and tired of people like yourself commenting with the same old "Metallica got too commercial, they aren't thrash anymore, they haven't been a thrash band since the Justice album" etc. BS! Metallica DID NOT WANT TO STICK TO THRASH AND DO ONLY THAT! James and Lars have said during the 30th anniversary interview for the "...And Justice for All" album that they had done all that they could with thrash metal and saw that there were bands doing it much better than them as well as how futile it was to keep going with that formula. And I can't believe I have to tell this story again, but during the Damaged Justice tour, they saw the reaction from the audience to songs like the title track from the Justice album and "The Frayed ends of Sanity" and realized that their setlist got shorter and shorter because of those songs, and that the audience started to get bored around the 8- or 9-minute mark, which was why they decided to hire Bob Rock for The Black Album. THEY HAD TO HAVE HELP and HAD TO HAVE SOMEONE HELP THEM MAKE SHORTER SONGS THAT JUST GOT TO THE POINT! WHY IS THAT SO DAMN HARD FOR PEOPLE LIKE YOU TO COMPREHEND OR GRASP? AM I GETTING THROUGH TO YOU NOW, OR DO I HAVE TO PUT THAT IN TEMRS THAT YOUR FEEBLE MIND CAN UNDERSTAND?

Kirk Hammet was a better fit for Metallica, Kirk was humble. Mustaine wanted to be the KING and got kicked out, Mostly because he was a drunk and an A hole. so he has spent the rest of his life trashing Metallica mostly Lars but also kirk. Mustaine also did heroin, I was in a 12 step program with Dave in 2002. in Phoenix Az.
