Concerning the song lyrics: "You saw her bathing on the roof" is a reference to King David and Bathsheba and "She tied you to the kitchen chair. She broke your throne and she cut your hair" refers to Sampson and Delilah. Both are stories of foolishness and betrayal due to love or lust, so perhaps that is his meaning in this. Cohen sang it different each time he sang it and gave different explanations as well, so I suppose that we have to apply our own spin. Glad you liked PTX.

I knew the part about cutting the hair was Samson’s story, but didn’t know about watching a woman bathing on a roof until day 129 of the Bible in a Year podcast today, not King David’s finest hour with the wife of one of his “Mighty Men”.

Cohen once said he nearly went mad writing verses for this song. His producer said that when he pitched it to him he had written more than 80 verses. Per the rolling stone

Hallelujah is often mistakenly referred to as a religious or holiday song, but that was never the intention of the writer/original performer Leonard Cohen. It was meant to be a song of lust, lost love, heartbreak and isolation, using Biblical allegories to tell the tale, but he also left the exact meaning of the lyrics up to the interpretation of each individual listener. Over the years, Cohen wrote many additional verses to the song (over 80 in all), some of which were more appropriate to religious or holiday performances. He wanted the individual performer to choose whichever verses were valid to the version they were going to perform. This is one of the most-covered songs of all time and there are MANY different versions. Pentatonix recorded this song for one of their numerous Christmas albums, and were planning to use lyrics from verses that were more Christmas-related, but then decided to record the song as Cohen had originally written it instead. There have been unconfirmed reports that Cohen heard this recording shortly before his death and called it the best version he had ever heard.
@larrywt656
@larrywt656 2 жыл бұрын
I have learned since posting this that Cohen did NOT hear the song before his death. That was just an untrue rumor. Also, Pentatonix didn't "decide" to record Cohen's original lyrics. The publishing company would only give the group permission to record the song if they used the original lyrics.

re the poetry: Leonard Cohen was raised with knowledge of Jewish and Christian imagery, and was more familiar with the bible than most christians. He was an immensely gifted poet, and there are videos and articles interpreting his poetry. He wrote much more than he ever put to his prolific music.

The song was first recorded in 1984 by Leonard Cohen. Since then it has been covered by various artists over 300 times. There are many lyrics to this song, but this version is on average the more popular choice of lyrics. Check out their version of "Mary Did You Know".

Leonard Cohen was known for soulful and poetic songs exploring despair, broken love and politics, often laced with religious imagery. Cohen said that it can be melancholic, fragile, uplifting or joyous, depending on how it was sung. A good known cover, very sorrowful, is by Jeff Buckley. The group you listened are a capella group (no instruments in most songs - if they use any, you will clearly see them, usually cello) consisting of beatboxer/celloboxer (dark skinned guy - Kevin), bass (guy with black beard - Avi), baritone (guy that sang first - Scott), tenor (guy with a hat - Mitch) and soprano (girl - Kirstin, goes as Kirsty as well). In 2017 the bass guy left the group and another joined (Matt). If you want to see less video clip products, there is always live MTV recording - "Popspring 2016" - it is live, but it is professionally recorded and not with fan's phone. It has several songs (might be as separate videos) and still the original band members. Recommend to start with Evolution of Michael Jackson.

Great reaction to a magnificent performance. All of the members except Mitch have a 5 octave range. Mitch, the man in the hat with the heartbreaking angelic voice, has a 6 octave range. Even more astounding is that all 5 tune their notes to a 64th of a tone. Sung individually it is almost impossible for the average person to tell. In a capella close harmony, tuning that finely is how you get the resultant harmonics that give the chords do much life and fullness.

The "FORTH the FIFTH, the minor chord and the Major lift etc

You need to fully understand the range of the various singers. The first lead, Scott, seamlessly drops into full bass to cover Avi (the beard) when he takes the lead for that second stanza. Then Kirstin takes an angelic verse, and then you have Mitch, who has a range that only Angels can try for. For what it's worth, Leonard Cohen said that this was his favorite version. The whole song, which has many more verses, is about a love and relationship going bad. The 'kitchen chair' verse is about Delilah and Sampson.

scott, first one singing is baritone can go higher , and lower, second one singing was avi he is bass. that deep rumble and deep voice is him, he can go higher as well, the girl kirstie third singer is messo soprano , next was mitch, he and kirstie change looks all the time. mitch sings counter tenor. and kevin the beatboxer is tenor as well. now avi not only does bass but he also does sound effects such as wind,ufo overtones. and much more. he left in 2017 due to his mother being ill. matt is the new bass tho unlike avi matt is a bass atone who like scott is baritone that can do bass, avi is a real bass that can do baritone as well as low tenor.

Please react to more Pentatonix. Tell us what music you like and we will offer up a cover or original. They literally have hundreds of songs. You will see information on Leonard Cohen in responses. He was a secularist. But this work of art was a hodgepodge of themes mostly about love and politics. It is specifically not a religious song though you will hear it played around the holidays. Some folks get upset if you say it is religious, but honestly, pull whatever meaning you want from the music; it is yours to love and cherish.

@Maerahn
@Maerahn 3 жыл бұрын
There are a lot of different interpretations of the song. The most common is that it compares that kind of all-consuming, masochistic love, where you pour your entire heart and soul into what's ultimately a doomed, one-sided relationship, to a blind, fanatical religious devotion - where you keep on desperately believing in that love being your 'salvation,' even when it seems like you're the one doing all the giving, with little to no reward or recognition in return. (Even the smallest crumb of affection from the cold and distant partner evokes the 'Hallelujah!' of joy - and relief - from the devoted lover.) The 'tying to the kitchen chair' verse alludes to the biblical story of Samson and Delilah, where Samson's lover Delilah discovered the secret to his incredible strength lay in his long hair, which he never cut, so she betrayed him by tricking him into letting her cut his hair, which robbed him of all his strength. Pentatonix are an awesome acapella group - if you start reacting to more of their videos you'll pretty much build yourself an instant subscriber base of Pentaholics! It'll be worth it though... you're on the edge of a rabbit-hole into some amazing music. 😊

You might want to google Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen. He actually wrote 81 verses to this song and different singers/groups choose the ones they wish to use. The first and second verses here make reference to King David and Samson and Delilah but these are Mr. Cohens secular thoughts for sure. I enjoyed your reaction..it’s always fun to watch someone’s first reaction to Pentatonix (not Pentatonic). Music speaks to everyone one on a different meaning. So, if it speaks to you of Christmas, then that is o.k. however, according to an interview i read , the co writer explained that it uses, OLD testament imagery and story references to describe how no matter what life has thrown at him, no matter the mistakes made, there is always hope. The "hallelujah".

Welcome to the new world of a capella. Pentatonix and Home Free have rewritten the book on a capella worldwide. All of the suggestions for more songs to listen to are great. Pentatonix has 3 Grammies, one for their "Daft Punk Medley", one for their" Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairies", and one for basically being Dolly Parton's backup band(?) on "Jolene". Also, try "The Sound of Silence" (Simon & Garfunkel), "Imagine" (John Lennon), "Bohemian Rhapsody" (Queen), and of course, any of their Christmas music. For Home Free may I recommend their "Man of Constant Sorrow", "Will the Circle be Unbroken" (Johnny Cash), and my favorite, "Helplessly Hoping" (Crosby, Stills & Nash) (and then a quarantined Italian Youth Choir's cover of Home Free's arrangement).

Leonard Cohen was Jewish, so it most definitely is not gospel. Some of the imagery is based on Old Testament biblical stories, particularly the first verse. The 4th verse is about the heartbreak of the world, and nobody catches that sadness better than Mitch Grassi.
@hannaborchard5402
@hannaborchard5402 3 жыл бұрын
@Michael Tutty I actually commented on another reaction that was trying to apologize for taking it as a religious song that the verses of this straight up came out of the old testament and could absolutely be Christian but could very well be Jewish. I didn't know Leonard Cohen was Jewish. I'm not a believer of either religion, but will still enjoy the hell out of this song always because it's a good song. People getting pissed about other people correctly associating it with religion are insecure and need to get over themselves. You don't have to be catholic to think the stained glass in a catholic church is beautiful. Why are people so quick to try and delegitimize the religious aspect of a song to try and justify the fact that they enjoy it? I'm also not Islamic but find the architecture of mosques beautiful. You don't have to like or follow the religion to enjoy the art that comes from it. It's a great song, and Pentatonix does a bitchin' version of it. I can't get enough of their version of Mary Did You Know even though it's a very Christian song. A good song is a good song.

That's a masterpiece. Thanks for the reaction. This is a great PTX starting point. Mid career, Try "Mary did you know"?, early...."Daft Punk Medley", their 1st Grammy, done in a closet!!!, "Can you feel the love tonight", with new bass Matt(and maybe one of the greatest bass lines I've ever heard.) "Sound of Silence" late career, and any of their new one from a just released EP. When the party's over, Blinding Lights and the new Original Happy Now which will make you feel so good no matter the mood. Literally 100's more welcome to the rabbit hole known at Pentatonix. @@lifewithsuzzyq2039 I was just sayin that too many of the reactors are copy one another when they should let the performance happen like on AGT before comment. I glad you not too mad at me, you too pretty to anger up.

Now that you've seen the robotic version, which is chorally perfect by a well trained choral group, check out the version with soul from 4th Impact. We can't hear your voice Suzie

A very soulful version is performed by Jeff Buckley. This song can be performed in different ways - melancholic, fragile, uplifting or joyous, depending on performer - and it is the author's opinion, that "many different hallelujahs exists". I don't say their Hallelujah version is better or worse than others, everyone is entitled for their opinion, but you could suggest your song without insulting other one. Btw, they are a capella group, not choral group. And they all met 1 day before their first performance, which was on TV, while being 19-23 years old.

Fourth Impact are Pentatonix fans and their cover of Imagine was done as a tribute to them. Your comment showed an amazing lack of class and was totally disrespectful towards one of the finest female groups on the planet!!!

@@daddynunya9045 as I said, everyone is entitled for their opinions. I never said that the group you mentioned is bad or good, or anything else about them (I literally did not mention them at all in my comment), if you noticed. But if that makes you feel better, oh well.
