This is a tribute song to Elvis. His picture was painted on black velvet alot and sold mostly on street corners. The music is a blend like the blends Elvis sang.

In interviews at the time, (I am that old) Alannah said it referenced Elvis's first ever TV appearance. It was at a County Fair & he wore a black velvet shirt. He was still dirty blonde then too. He start dyeing his hair darker, not long after. It's on YT if you want to look for it.

This song is a tribute / nod to Elvis Presley. During a specific time period Elvis’s portrait was painted on black velvet. There are easily recognizable refers such as Love Me Tender and others. Love this song.

Black Velvet was also the name of the shade Elvis used to dye his hair. “Later in his life, Elvis opted in for a signature mix of hair dyes: Miss Clairol 51D and Black Velvet / Mink Brown by Paramount. Due to this, every single photo you will see of him features super-dark black hair.”

My mom had a huge picture of Elvis pained on black velvet. Those were being sold a lot in the 80's I believe. It was a striking picture. You felt it to your soul when you looked in his eyes. I would swear those paintings were possessed by Elvis himself LOL. I'm not the first one to notice that about those pictures I've always loved this song. I don't know if she did much after this tho. Her voice is fantastic

People keep saying this tribute to Elvis Is referring to the black velvet paintings that were popular for a while. Every word is about Elvis but both Alannah and the songwriter have said the title is NOT about those kitschy paintings. It's about Elvis's overall mystique, his voice, his impact on the world etc. I saw Alannah sing this live, while the song was a hit, when she opened for Robert Plant on his 1989 solo tour. She sounded great.💙💫

I don't believe you that she said it was not inspired by the Black Velvet paintings of Elvis. you are obviously too young to know how the Black Velvet portraits of Elvis was so popular and sold everywhere through the late 70s and early eighties. furnish a link to an interview where she said it wasn't. if you can't do furnish a link then you're just talking out your Bu,,,,

Unless you around after Elvis died no one will know that the Black Velvet is Elvis. After he died his picture was painted on black velvet canvas and sold on street corners everywhere! I used to have one but it was badly damaged in a move. It sounds country, rock and blues because that was Elvis's style. Alana Myles nailed it! Have you listened to Walking In Memphis yet. By Marc Cohn? If not, you should check it out.

Paintings on black velvet extended beyond Elvis in the 70s, but he was probably the most popular subject. It was a thing when I was in college to decorate a room with several black velvet posters or pictures, put a blackout curtain over the window, and turn on a black-light lamp and watch the pictures come alive.

The black velvet thing was very popular in the late 60s and 70s. There were painting-by-number kits that you got to paint of Elvis and other things. The Elvis paintings were everywhere. My mom and folks her age were really into that. I even did a couple myself. Great song!!

This is the best video of her and this song, thank you for doing this one. ♥I love it and always look forward to watching with reactors. I was 40 years old the first time I heart this. I did once have a portrait of Elvis, my friend gave it to me when she married my brother! She didn't want to have it in the house for him to see it LOL I have forgotten where I put it. :( It wasn't painted on black velvet though, oh well. Stuff happens to things over the years. I'm 74 now and I was a huge Elvis fan, pretty much everyone was a fan of him.

The "black" music that was being sung by Elvis who brought that "underground sound" to the surface of white America in the mid fifties. What we know today as rock 'n' roll also having sexual connotations. Much more raw than 40's romantic swing, our parents had a fit! It was like being naughty without the drugs and alcohol. Black Velvet, if you please.

Allanah Myles was the bomb. Unfortunately, after too many visits to the chiropractor, she wound up with serious back problems that made her bed-ridden for well over a year I think which seriously screwed with the momentum of her career. She made a comeback though and is a Canadian treasure although she's never made it to the American top forty again which is really too bad.
