Great song!! Facts: this song is a paean to ELVIS PRESLEY whose portraits were often painted on black velvet and also black velvet was the name of the hair color dye Elvis used!! Great reaction as always! 💜🎵 good choice, Nanner👍

Yeah as many have commented, the song is about Elvis Presley. The "new religion" was rock & roll. And the black velvet reference is to paintings that you could find everywhere especially in the Southern U.S. You'd literally drive by gas stations or street corners & there would be artists set up outside selling portraits of Elvis painted on black velvet. I have no idea why this was a thing. But they were literally everywhere. If you want to see examples just do an internet search for "elvis black velvet painting" & you'll see tons. They were tacky/gaudy as hell, yet somehow beautiful at the same time.

I love Alannah Myles. I remember when this video came out. I was just a kid and I so wanted to be her. Her hair, her leather jacket. She is incredible. She has several other songs, A Song Instead of a Kiss, Lover of Mine, Still Got This Thing to name a few. Another Canadian artist to check out, if you haven't, is Sass Jordan's Make You a Believer. Another, who due to issues with her past record label was on a 20 year hiatus and just came back with a new album last year is Amanda Marshall. Beautiful Goodbye, Dark Horse, Love Lift Me, Let it Rain, If I Didn't Have You, Fall From Grace, Trust Me, I'll Be Okay, Birmingham, Why Don't You Love Me, Marry Me, Everybody's Got a Story. Any song you pick, I'm sure you will enjoy and appreciate her vocals.

The song is a tribute to Elvis. His face was, is found on black velvet paintings everywhere. Mississippi is where he was born. Memphis is where his career took off.

Loved her voice had KIND OF a Joan Jett vibe to me. Had I not read the comments, especially Nanner's I would not have known this was about Elvis, makes so much sense. Great song choice! Really enjoyed the song and, of course your reaction Hap ✌️ ☮️ 🎶

👏👏👏BOOM!! Smoothest and most beautiful tribute song to the King ever made!!! Funny enough, when I was a little girl in the 70's... my mom was given an Elvis portrait, painted on black velvet canvas... I think she still has it! lol!! Anyway, I was gonna comment to Hap that it's about Elvis but saw ur comment and decided to jump in and join you!😜

Listen to the lyrics then the connection to Elvis is clear. I’ve never heard that black velvet was his hair dye color, but rather a nod to the millions of paintings of Elvis on black velvet. They were everywhere 60s-80s.

Song is about Elvis. You bad boy. Would *I* send you a naughty song? Moi? 😜 Next one....maybe? 😉 The house she was in front of was his childhood home in Tupelo Mississippi. I'd never say I was a huge Elvis fan but I love this song. It's kind of my go to blues and one of my belt it out in the car (alone!) songs. 1) Black Velvet: They use to (probably still do) sell paintings of Elvis done on black velvet 2) New religion/bring you to your knees: Kind of "The church of Elvis" bringing young women to their knees when he would preform" 3) The way he moved, it was a sin, so sweet and true: Elvis's hip swing...banned on TV in the early days 4) Up in Memphis the music's like a heatwave: Sun Studios. The place where he would record. Also THE place in the US fore some of the greats of early Rock to record 5) Mama's baby's in the heart of every school girl: He loved his mama.....then of course when he became famous all the girls loved him 6) Love Me Tender leaves 'em cryin' in the aisle: Love me Tender....famous Elvis song 7) Every word of every song that he sang was for you. In a flash he was gone, it happened so soon, what could you do?: Young girls felt he was singing to them only....and of course "in a flash he was gone" is due to his sudden death. Thank you for digging up the original. ♥ Sheesh try to find an alternative to help stop blocking and then it's the original that makes it through. I'll never understand the wacky world of KZfaq! The link was to an inferior version of the original. So ended up with better quality of the same thing. So very odd.

Actually, I think the house is a little cabin on her parent's vacation property. I seem to remember Alannah saying so in an interview.

I'm from Canada I was in England when the song came out it's amazing it seems like everybody in England knew this was a Canadian singer but nowhere else on the charts really did they advertise that and she should have become bigger than she was wasn't because she was Canadian I don't know anyways great great voice seriously and such a sultry song God bless

It seems that this version also was blocked at least partially. I’m only able to watch it now. Oh I love this song. Such a fantastic rhythm and beat, so soulful and soothing. Very contagious, so that it sticks in your head. But I never knew this was about Elvis - I'm still learning something new here☺️. Fantastic reaction HAP and wonderful choice Nanner 🥰🙋🏻‍♀️.

The hilarious thing here is I am in this video. It was filmed in Kingston Ontario at the Stages nightclub. They performed this song three times!!! to get the video shots. If you look closely with the pause you can see me with my day glo green t-shirt in the crowd. Great show nonetheless. And Stages still exists.
