if you're into artistic, metaphorical music you'll like dreamcatcher. their music filled with social critique and good message despite their dark concept. dreamcatcher probably the most artistic group on today music industry.

This is going to be a long one. Dreamcatcher are very unique. They are the dark angels of Kpop and the only girl group who consistently incorporate Rock and Metal in their title tracks, fusing that with Kpop into something that basically is a new genre. They also are drenched in horror and social criticism, which again is special. Plus, they are massively talented, all of them. And while the girls look like they could rip your spine out when they are on stage, off stage they are adorable crackheads. 😉 They are also LGBTQ+ icons in a way. Example: Yoohyeon was asked in an interview about her potential partner, and she answered she likes hardworking people. So the interviewer said Yoohyeon likes hardworking men. She corrected the interviewer, saying "I said hardworking people, all kinds of people". In BEcause, Dreamcatcher are outdoing themselves once again. Musically, the song is a fantastic journey. There actually are "cute" parts, but there also are parts where the guitars go full metal. The variations in BEcause remind me of their previous masterpiece, Deja Vu. The bridge with SuA's slow rap and Yoohyeon's adlibs is possibly the most beautiful one they have ever done. About the meaning: According to Dami, BEcause is about love becoming obsession. And also, this is a stand-alone story. They go back to their horror roots, which I really enjoy. One commenter noted that if you look at "BE" as a written Chinese character "悲“, that would mean "sadness". So the song title would mean "The Cause of Sadness". And that would make the lyric "because I like you" to maybe mean "the cause of sadness is I like you". That commenter is Jad Hamizan and he deserves all the credit for noticing that. The video picks up on that. JiU seems to be the puppet master here (or her doppelganger!). She is the one trapping the other members and turning them into puppets, but Gahyeon tries to escape (as you can see by her throwing off the cage right in the beginning). It seems JiU catches her again though, "because she likes her". And I didn't even touch on the references to the movie "Us" yet, there is so much going on. The lyrics are even creepier. SuA sings: "Your expression is blue, blue. Your face is like ocean view.", hinting at strangulation due to the one being obsessed taking things way, way too far. Dreamcatcher are clearly not afraid to tackle the difficult subjects, and they do it masterfully here - again. For me, this is more than just pop, it is art. Scream is part 1 of the Dystopia trilogy, which is about cyber-bullying, hateful comments and people losing themselves in the (fake) online world. It is mostly showing the victim's perspective of (cyber)bullying, comparing it to a medieval witch hunt. The tree is the tree of language, and it grows black fruit for every hurtful thing people say. Note also the hand gesture, it is the devil's horns introduced by Ronnie James Dio as a symbol for metal, but it originally was a gesture in the middle ages to ward off the evil eye, tying into the witch hunt theme. Boca means "mouth" in Spanish and Portuguese and is part 2 of the Dystopia trilogy. Boca has the line "Too many angels dying now", which points to the effects malicious comments can have. Several Kpop idols have committed suicide in recent years, most likely because of cyber-bullying, but this is also about all the unnamed people who suffer from online bullies. A girlgroup tackling such a subject impresses the hell out of me. They literally go to war in this video and tell haters to go and shut their "Boca" in the lyrics. And the song is absolutely awesome!

As for what was going on in Scream and Boca, that's the first 2/3 of the Dystopia trilogy, which is actually about cyberbullying, believe it or not. Scream is about someone who is subjected to anonymous hate (the "devil eyes", for example) and ends up breaking down and spreading hate to others as a result. Boca is from the perspective of someone else who wants to protect people from this hatred by shutting the mouths (boca = mouth in Spanish) of those who would hurt them. Odd Eye, which you haven't watched yet (but should), tells us not to seek refuge in social media or other things like it, because it's all a false utopia. True peace only exists within yourself. The message is deeper and more meaningful than most of what you normally find in K-pop tracks - "too many angels dying now" is a reference to the multiple idols who have committed suicide in recent years due to cyberbullying.

At first sight, it might seem that the song "BEcause" is about toxic/abusive relationships and destructive behavior out of love for a particular person, but it is not. The meaning is different, and it is much deeper. Let's start with the fact that the very name "BEcause" can be interpreted as "The cause of sadness", because "BE" in Chinese is a hieroglyph meaning "sadness", and "cause" is an English word. This turns the whole view of the song. The lyrics in essence about deception (primarily about self-deception) and being obsessed with someone. The MV and song contain the message that our worst enemy is none other than ourselves - the culprits of our sadness. It's not so much that Dreamcatcher was replaced by doubles at the end, but that their dark side, which eventually took over the other, is revealed as the true self as a result of a growing obsession with the obsessive desire to be loved, which pushes them into an endless cycle, where they simultaneously act as perpetrators and victims, as well as puppeteers and puppets. The clip was inspired by the American movie "We" about evil doubles who decided to replace real people (you can see many references, including in the choreography itself). There, as in "BEcause", there are two colors - red and blue. Red represented doubles, while blue represented originals. In the Dreamcatcher clip, it will be the other way around. Red implies their real, while blue is their ideal version. Each time they pretended to be their ideal version (the hourglass symbolizes the temporary nature of pretense and deception), which to some extent brought them satisfaction, but actually played with them, which caused them pain, but since they were unable to resist the temptation (the dark side of Sua, holding out another an apple that she bites off), they continued to wear masks. They wanted to be always loved, and in fact it did not matter who, but with their obsession and creepy behavior, the girls only repulsed others even more. In the end, they reveal their true selves, with the naive hope that the loved one will nevertheless remain on their side. When their true self begins to manifest, some damage has already been done, and it will not be possible to escape from themselves and their sadness.

Scream was my introduction to Dreamcatcher and I've loved them ever since. Combines my love of both rock and kpop. It doesn't hurt that the members are all gorgeous as well.

In the song Boca when they sing the line: too many angles dying now. It's a reference to Kara's Goo Hara and F(x)'s Sulli. Cause they sing about hate/online hate and that people should not open their mouths to say bad things etc.

Something that might let you enjoy Scream a little more... First, as others have already pointed out, Scream and Boca are anti-cyber bullying / hate songs. The reference to "Devil eyes come" is a metaphor for the haters turning their attention on their intended victim(s). Long before it was used by rock bands as devil's horns, the hand gesture was, in some cultures, used as a ward against evil. In the video, the gesture is being used to ward off the devil eyes (i.e. the haters and bullies). So, yeah, while Dreamcatcher may be the queens of dark concepts, they are in no way trying to portray devil worshippers. Hope that helps.

So quick note about the "Devil Eyes Come" line in Scream, if you notice the way the thumb is positioned, it's not the "horns of the evil one" hand symbol, its actually a blocking of evil from clouding "the third eye" I think? The thumb isn't tucked, like it would be otherwise. (Someone who knows more on this please correct me if I've said any of that wrong.)

Scream is about online hate and bullying when it gets dark enough to severely affect someone and the lyrics compare it to medieval witch hunts many years ago when they got stoned "My tied up hands are getting numb , everyone throws stones at me but I can’t escape". The "too many angels dying now" refers to the Korean celebs that killed themselves over online hate. Also notice how it's "please, I don't want to scream" and turns to "I just want to make you scream" at the end. I think it refers to the anger and wanting revenge on the people bullying and causing pain.

The Nightmare series talks about them being witches and nightmares, in a few words. Scream and Boca are part of the Dystopia series. You only need Odd Eye to complete this series. This one talks about bullying, and all songs are linked to the 3 wise monkeys, and their phrase of "See No Evil, Hear to Evil, Speak No Evil". BEcause not sure which series it's so far. Dreamcatcher also has one of the best live vocals. Red velvet as well, but Dreamcatcher each of them can be a main vocalist. Soyeon has without a doubt the most powerful voice in kpop

Scream and Boca are part one and two and from my understanding they are both songs about bullying, haters and so on. The phrase "too many angels dying now" i believe is referring to the sad fact that in the recent years we have lost a few kpop idols to suicide from the hate they got online.
