This was at the end of his movie run and he hadn't toured or performed in 8 plus years. The special had at least 3 different performances and one aired on tv. His voice was so strained and the rasp set in. My grandfather fit the Elvis time period most. My dad became a major collector and dealer. But from the earliest I can remember, it was like Elvis was alive as kid in the early to mid 90s for me. I can answer most questions and tell ya some stuff that is floating around to this day. A ex gf of Elvis is a family friend. She still has the ring he gave her.

You just witness THE GREATEST ENTERTAINER THIS WORLD WILL EVER SEE!!! No auto tune no pitch correction just pure perfection. Elvis was like a God among men, when he sang you could not just hear him but you could feel him as he touched your very soul. Elvis had it all the voice, the looks, the moves, power emotion passion and charisma like no other. Elvis could sing the phone book and make it a hit. No one else will ever even come close. The most important thing to Elvis was us his fans and he gave us his all. Elvis was a gift to us all from GOD himself. Long live The King!!!!

His stride as he walked was even cool, the way he talked...cool. And he did it without even trying, he just simply was FIRE !! Hre was'nt a superstar, he was a GALAXY 🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸

The 68" Come Back Special was for Elvis returning to live performance after a seven-year period during which he focused on his film appearances. Mac Davis wrote "Memories" for Elvis, he also wrote "In the Ghetto" for Elvis. Mac Davis was also a very popular performer/songwriter in his own right and very popular in his day! Note: Elvis Presley never lip synced a "live performance" in his whole life!

That was 100% recorded live, Britt. The man just had an incredible talent. You are so spot on with your description of the 'one-trick ponies' of today and the generic, lacklustre music they produce. None of them - NONE - can hold a candle to this man. You asked about the '68 Comeback Soecial and if it was directly after his service. It was after, but not directly after. Elvis had two comebacks; the first was indeed after his two year national service, but that was in 1960. He left the army, recorded a bunch of brilliant new songs, and simply picked up where he left off as the #1 artist in the entire music industry. The other thing he did was sign a contract to star in over 30 movies over the next several years. While these films were financially lucrative, artistically they were disastrous to the King's musical career as a serious artist, because the majority of the music in these films was (mostly) lightweight, throwaway filler. He did produce one hidden gem amongst this garbage; his second LP of all gospel material, HOW GREAT THOU ART in 1966. His movie contract fondly ended in 1968 (bar one last film), and the subsequent '68 COMEBACK SPECIAL was signalling Presley's 'comeback' to mainstream music again as a serious performing artist. By way Britt, your reactions are wonderful. To see you clearly so enamoured with Elvis Presley and his music is just beautiful.

The Comeback Special was him returning back to performing in front of people again after a 7 year hiatus by spending that time in Hollywood making musical comedies with no public appearances during that span. Being forced to make movies he didn't care to because he was under a 6 year contract with Paramount Pictures. The Special was incredibly successful obviously and led to his return to the live stage and touring again.

One of my favorites you are on target girl. Actually his greedy manager signed him up to 7 years of movies and he was locked in from doing concerts which was his thing. No live performances for 7 years. When he finally got out of that, he did this special for NBC. He was terrified that he had been forgotten, and was extremely nervous. Right up to the second he almost chickened out because he said He hated TV because they always made a joke about him. Well honey he showed them, he was and still is the most beautiful man to ever walk the earth. You rock with your reactions, and know that there are millions who share the feeling you get when watching him. Be Blessed.

“Memories” is so beautiful. Sexy and no you won’t get over it. I’m 69 and still love his music. The Comeback Special was his reentry into entertainment after being gone to Hollywood for about 7 years making 30 movies being the highest paid actor in Hollywood. He got tired of Colonel Tom selling him into non challenging scripts that were really not good enough for this talented man. So he did this special with new people around him who took him in a direction where he was “the boss” of what he was going to sing from then on until his death. Beautiful songs, soulful and totally unique to Elvis.

I often wonder how different things might have been if Col Parker had not blocked Steve Binder from all further communications with Elvis. Binder and Co had a great fit with Elvis, were very creative together, and I think he would have guided Elvis to even greater heights working WITH him rather than controlling him as Col did. Elvis gave him his number and told him to call - he was excited about working more with Binder. He made many calls, but they were intercepted and Elvis waited, but never heard from him again. How sad! Love you, Elvis! Always have, and always will.

@@nancy9891 Yes. I've listened to an interview with Steve Binder and he and Elvis could have made magic together! He was a smart man, a creative man, and he knew how to bring out the best in Elvis. Elvis was discharged from active duty in the Army in 1960. Elvis, commonly referred to as the '68 Comeback Special, is an Elvis Presley concert special that aired on NBC on December 3, 1968. It marked Presley's return to live performance after a seven-year period during which he focused on his film appearances.

When Elvis returned from the service, of course he made quite a few movies with many leading actresses of the time, but he also had to deal with the " British Invasion " taking the music industry over . So he truly made a comeback and did so with commitment unmatched to this very day and never will be matched !! The King !!

This was a TV special that happened as he was getting out of a dreadful movie-making contract that had him making subpar movies with terrible soundtracks. His music career had been floundering for a period of about 5 years as he was not doing top-notch songs while releasing these movie soundtrack albums, some of which were very forgettable. This was also going on at a time when the British Invasion led by groups like the Beatles and Rolling Stones along with the Motown artists were dominating the record charts and sales. He was at a crossroads where he needed something to get him back on track in the music industry, and this special was that vehicle that breathed new life in his musical career. This song was one of four that Elvis recorded that was penned by by Country and Rock music star, Mac Davis. The other three were "A Little Less Conversation", "In The Ghetto" and "Don't Cry Daddy".

Memories was written by Billy Strange and Mac Davis specially for Presley to perform on Elvis, his comeback TV special that would air on NBC on December 3, 1968. The show was actuals taped in the summer of 1968. Mac Davis also wrote other songs for Elvis like In the Ghetto, etc. Mac Davis became a singer/songwriter star on his own soon and had his own TV show for a year or two in the mid 1970's, did a couple of movies. Memories was sung here right after the small stage leather suit segment of the show with his ex band members and by himself. The song makes ME cry now that I am the only one left of my original family. as a former music teacher and musician I agree...One Trick Ponies today...believe me I miss Dionne Warwick and others as much as Elvis in this regard. and audiences are rude, won't settle down for a beautiful song like this like you see in the video.

You said a lot of beautiful and profound things, especially in comparing Elvis to artists of today. And in some ways Elvis' talent is inexplicable and in other ways not. While, for one, I don't think we'll ever again see an artist given so many natural gifts as Elvis was tall; had blue eyes; perfect teeth; beautiful lips, and he could musically, pick up almost any instrument and master it rather quickly. While even just the sound of his natural voice was so warm & inviting without getting into range. There's a lot of things that separate Elvis from today's artist, too, but range is one of the biggest parts of that and he worked really hard on that. Because the average pop singer is known to have a range of about one (1) full octave while Elvis got to where he could do all parts of a quartet and had a range from about 2 and 1/4 quarter octaves to 3. He worked to develop that, though, because just like the bicep is a muscle that can grow, so too, are ones' vocal cords. Elvis also learned to not just sing from his head as so many people do, but to bring the sound from his diaphragm and to sing with full breath support with a very manly, baritone sound, though he could easily shift gears to a soft falsetto and more . While if you listen to a song like 'Hurt' you'll get to see Elvis show off the power of his voice, as the notes he hits there are only ones more typically hit by an Opera singer. Thus the reason he was so admired by opera singers, too, such as the fantastic Bryn Terfel and kiri te kanawa, considered one of the world's greatest female opera singers and who said that the young Elvis Presley had the greatest voice she ever heard. When members of the more well known 'Three Tenors,' who you have probably heard of in Pavarotti and Plácido Domingo, have also said amazing things as to Elvis. As after listening to Elvis sing 'Hurt' and some other semi-operatic songs, Pavarotti had said that the difference between he and Elvis was that "Elvis is able to play on my playground (meaning operatic type music, of course), but I can't play on his," which Pavarotti explained meant that he could never do the rock or soft ballads, or all the other genres Elvis could. While Placido Domingo said "Presley had a number of different, and special vocal timbres he could use with a great colorful voice. Domingo said that Elvis' voice is the one "I wish I had." There can be no higher praise than that!

The comeback was not from the Army (that was 1960), but from not having performed live since '61. Also, by implication, coming back from the long dry spell of his movie era, where he had become bored with his work and needed to revitalize his career.

Elvis went into the army in 1958. When he returned he first appeared on the Frank Sinatra show. Then went on to make movies. Once his movie contract concluded he was itching to be back on the stage preforming. Where he belonged. Hence the '68 Comeback Special' the off to Vegas.

I always LOVE your Elvis reactions! My mom actually met him very early on in his career and kept a picture of them sitting on the hood of a Cadillac. So we grew up listening to his music and watching every t.v special he appeared on. But wasn't until I was older that I truly appreciated what a natural phenomenon that man was! There will never be another like him, for certain!

I've seen a lot of people question whether he's lip synching before - and I get it because he's AMAZING. But no, unless it's a movie production or some other production (like the gospel sequence of the 68 special), he sings live. And I prefer a lot of his live stuff over his studio versions, depending. He's just that good.

There will never be anyone like Elvis ever again. He had the total package. Great voice, great range, good looking and a voice that’s no where close to being matched by anybody. Charisma, charm tender loving. He gave 100% on every concert or performance. That’s why he is the King. In the ghetto and look up Elvis’s last song sung on stage. He was singing live in this concert. He was a perfectionist. Look up Elvis documentary’s and you will learn so much about him and how he got his style. His #1 love was his mother, then Lisa Marie second and Priscilla.

I've been following your channel and I'm loving it. Despite living in Brazil, he knows the story of Elvis well. Regarding this version of memories, I'll clear up your doubts. The instrumental of the song is a playback but Elvis' voice is live. If you search the internet you will find a second recording of memories of this same special, as Elvis recorded a few different shows to be used in the TV Special. you will notice that the way Elvis sings in these two versions are different, even in one part of the lyrics. Elvis had such a beautiful voice that people actually think he's lip-synching to a studio version. Congratulations on the channel!
