It is said that George Jones was the only person on the planet who could get 10 notes out of one syllable. You caught that when he said "HER today". I'm very proud of you for immediately catching on to the fact that "they placed a wreath upon his door" was another way of saying he had died. I watched one reaction and the guy listened to the entire song, and he had a huge smile on his face and said, "He finally moved on because he stopped loving her today." I sort of wanted to bang my head against the wall because he TOTALLY missed the point of the song. You said it's a sad song and yes, it is. In fact, it's so sad that George did not want to record it because he said, "It so sad that no one will want to hear it." It became his biggest hit! Thank you so much for reacting to this monster hit by George Jones!

To prey on someone's mind is an expression that just means he couldn't get her out of his mind. The tragedy was she fell out of love with him and ended the relationship, but he couldn't move on. She just came back to pay her respects. 💗

Yes, George is using different vocal inflections and minor lyric changes in this live performance. When something "preys upon your mind", you simply can't stop thinking about it. RIP Possum.

@@rajvader haha, he wasn't great live, I think he was very nervous on stage and of course therefore fairly drunk most of the time, conway was fantastic on stage and although george is like..imo the greatest voice ever, had a voice made to tear heart strings, he wasn't great on stage..at least as he got older, when he was younger he looked pretty relaxed but by himself center stage never looked easy for him

Although the song wasn't written by George Jones he was going through turmoil with Tammy wynette whom he loved very much and he destroyed that marriage by drinking and abusing her so he's actually singing the song that actually Tammy would be singing about him

The way I understand the song, she wasn't playing mind games with him, he just couldn't forget her. The story goes that George Jones didn't want to record this. He didn't think anyone would buy it because it was just "too damn sad". It became one of his biggest hits. For a more lighthearted song, check out "The One I Loved Back Then".

As I read the story, what George said was, "No one wants to hear this morbid son of a bitch!" And, of course, it did become a massive hit, which put his career back on track. His drinking issues, and his behavior because of it, had nearly killed his career, but this song pulled him out of that slump.

you are correct about that! George also had a very hard time recording this song. In the studio he kept drinking and messing up because he was so sad. They brought in Tammy Wynette to inspire him and when he saw her he did the song in one take. All of sorrow over losing her just poured out. The song is about her.

It was 1982, I was almost 13..my first dance with a guy was to this song. Randy West, I remember you. The lyrics hit deep...he literally loved her til the day he died, and he died with a smile on his face cause it was over.

I saw George Jones in concert several years before he passed. As soon as the first rift on the guitar played this song, the whole stadium was on its feet! Certainly one of his best. Other good ones by Jones are Who's Gonna Fill Their Shoes and The Grand Tour.

If you die, you have to stop loving them because you're not here anymore. I knew what this song meant when I was 12 years old. I don't get young people these days. Most of the reactions to this think the woman died, which makes zero sense. At least this young lady understood it right away.

Britt, when George recorded the song he told the record producer that no one will ever buy it because it is too sad. Well, it sold two million and won CMA song of the year two times in a row.

The song got nominated in 1980 and 1981. Not sure if it got an award for both years. Brit, check out his hair for White Lightning. Other songs George sang were Bartender's Blues, She Still Thinks I Still Care, The Race Is On, and there is another song where he uses his upper range and lower range. Conway Twitty is a singer to check out. His hits are Hello Darlin', Don't Cry, Joni (a story song you might like,) It's Only Make Believe, Slow Hand (Pointer Sisters' song), The Rose (Bette Midler song), Lay You Down, and more.

Talk about crying, I drove into Nashville for the first time on April 26, 2013 around 10:00 AM and as I was pulling into the city they announced on the radio that George Jones had just passed away. My friends and I stayed all week, they went to the funeral, I watched it from our hotel room. Every country artist you could think of was there. George’s wife was in the front row of the Grand Ol Opry and Allen Jackson sung “He stopped loving her today”, there was as not a dry eye in the building.

I was a teenager into my 20's in the 1970's. I loved and played rock n roll. Later in life I found an appreciation for, and then a love for old country music. With apologies to Stairway to Heaven by Led Zeppelin, Puccini's Nessun Dorma...and several thousand others...This song, sang by this man, is the one and only perfect song every recorded.

The best country love song ever written. I grew up listening to George and Tammy. They were my dad's favorite singers back in the early 70's and I can't stop listening to them today. The basis of the song is that he loved her all through his life even though she did not love him, and he went crazy every now and then because of his love for her. He stopped loving her when he died. It's funny, I am in that same place right now with someone I love and does not love me back. It is sad but I can't see loving anyone else, so I'd rather be alone. I am happy in my life and have everything I have ever wanted except for her. Thanks for the video.

My dad had a drinking problem, when I was 10 they finally got divorced, every time I went to visit my dad he was always depressed and drinking and listening to this old country. After 20 years , 20 YEARS , they found love again, my dad stopped drinking, found God , shortly after cancer found him , took him after 3 months, my mother the very next year, cancer found her, 3 months she was gone. I know they found each other again and will live eternity loving each other. Just before Christmas a unknown illness my brother battled for years took him but with his last few words, you could barely hear him but he asked his wife, who's that black headed woman in the corner with her head down praying, ofcourse we didn't see anybody but my mother had jet black hair, theres no doubt in my mind she came back for her baby boy. Bible says God will send a loved one back to guide us to the other side. I miss my brother so much, he was my rock, anytime things was going bad I could call or text him and he'd guide me through it, a man that was bed ridden was my rock, ot all happened so fast, I miss them but I know they would never come back to this pitiful world

The song is about a man who lost the love of his life. They're burying him and it's the first time his people have seen him smile in years. It's about the saddest song I know of. The reason he stopped loving her today is because he 'loved her till the day he died'.

Sometimes, we have a connection that stays with us forever. Don't be upset with her as she might not even have been aware of his feelings after they parted. I have always identified with this song because I have a similar circumstance. My first fiancee and I parted ways more than 50 years ago and we both moved on with our lives. But she still resonates with me as a love I will never forget.

OMG woman! Not only have I been observing people get introduced to this song that weren't really familiar with the older Country Music my whole life, I have also watched many reactions to it and I am not exaggerating when I say that you are the very fastest reaction to get this that I have ever seen. Ever. You got it right in the middle of the third line of the chorus, "All dressed up to go away." You are so damn quick. The line that absolutely kills me initially though is the second line, where they placed a wreath upon his door. That for me is when the whole meaning of the song starts to shift, and I think that's what happened to you as well, and then that next line confirms it. A lot of people don't even get it by the end of the song. And to be fair, I was a child when I first started hearing it on the radio, but it really wasn't until I was older that it dawned on me what the real meaning was. To me as a little kid, it was just another sappy adult song, but it was such a massive hit and I could literally see it make the older women in my family get teary-eyed. But it transcended for me because his voice is so amazing and I loved George Jones even then, mostly because of his upbeat funny stuff. The Ole' Possum, as they called him, was the King of Country Music there for a while, along with his wife Tammy Wynette, the Queen of Country Music. And she is still probably my favorite country singer, although there are many. But there is also a singer from decades later in the 90s that someone mentioned below, whom I absolutely revere. Her real-life story is heartbreaking and inspiring at the same time, and her name is Patti Loveless. Check out one of her biggest earlier hit songs, The Night's Too Long. I think you would love the lyrics because it's kind of about empowerment but it also talks about what happens when you buy into the regular work world to get ahead, and I've seen you talk about your own experience with that not that long ago. Plus I love the song, it just kicks and her voice is incredible. She really represents the older style of country music even while she was breaking norms in the 90s. As far as George Jones, there is some early stuff in black and white footage that shows his manic and hilarious side, for example White Lightning, huge early hit for him. But since you are new to country music, and I thought of this the other day on the Patsy Cline reaction, you are excellent at picking out little voice ornamentations and pitch and you can replicate it perfectly, but what you REALLY have to pay very close attention to in this kind of music, is the vocal phrasing. It is a complete art and it is amazing when you really start to notice what all they are doing, and it can get technically very rhythmically complicated, and yet they make it sound so natural, just part of the emotional conversation they are having with you. It reminds me of the concept of flow in hip-hop and rap. They sing before the beat and after the beat and they stretch things out and then compress them, and it's very malleable and expressive. So much so that it actually takes talented musicians and a tight band or studio musicians to be able to hold down the beat with the right feeling underneath it and not be pulled off of the meter. "Rubato" would be the closest classical term for it. And then when it hits right on the beat, it has all this punch - it just creates wonderful emotional tension and then release. It's my favorite thing about country music singing and a lot of other singing for that matter. I love the way Tammy Wynette phrases as well, but it really is a hallmark of good country music singing. Conway Twitty singing Hello, Darling is another fantastic example from later the 1970s. And there is a live cut of that floating around KZfaq that is quite popular. Absolutely love your reactions. And I'm so happy that you've got the media playback volume up and really present now, and got rid of the echo and the thin sounding mix by using good headphones. It's already one of the best presented reaction channels out there and I love it. I also really like how the video just starts right in and once you do your sign-off, it's immediately over. There's something about that that really appeals to me. Congratulations on 30K subs!

George is one of the greatest story tellers in music history. John Michael Montgomery had one of the best stories ever. It's called The Little Girl. If you love story telling this is the song.

Who's Gonna Fill Their Shoes (A Lot of References to other country greats you may not know yet) & A Picture of Me Without You are painfully beautiful songs. No Show Jones is a fun one & is about how George had a drinking problem and wouldn't show up to his own shows, people would have to be refunded. He earned the nickname 'No Show Jones' and Tammy divorced him. Later he got sober and came out with No Show Jones...

You are such a gem. Some off the best reactions, and I appreciate that you really listen. Very few understand this song on the reaction channels, and it's such a powerful song that it is just lost. Who's Gonna Fill Their Shows is one of his later songs that I highly recommend, but actually suggest holding it for a bit until you hear some more of the various Country masters. The Ride would be a great next song and is often overlooked. You're the Reason the Kids are Ugly is a hit. Really just about anything by George Jones is great.

A good reaction, many miss the point of the song. I'm glad you caught it. George had a rough life and many of his songs communicate the pain that he himself experienced. He also did some lighter songs and some that are just reflective. This song is often listed as the best country music song of all time. So you are right in saying it has that typical country song. Some others by him that are worth a listen: "White Lightning" "The Grand Tour" "If Drinkin' Don't Kill Me." And of course many many more.
