"He decided he stopped loving her." You guys are usually really good at picking up on the meaning behind songs, but you missed it this time, Jordan. The very first line of the song tells you everything you need to know about it: "He said, 'I'll love you till I die.'" In other words, when the song says, "he stopped loving her today," it's saying that he has died. This is supported by the fact that "they placed a wreath upon his door" and "soon they'll carry him away." The guy the song is talking about never gave up on or stopped loving the woman the song refers to through all the years. And yes, Amber, that was a harmonica. Now my recommendation is my second favorite country song of all time, performed by Tammy Wynette when she and George Jones split up: "D-I-V-O-R-C-E." It'll be a great one for a Female Friday. You need to do a lyric video for that one, and bring some tissues.

This is considered by many as the greatest country song of all time..and George the greatest country singer. I think he has a lot of great songs. If you want something similar to this maybe The Grand Tour...something a little more upbeat maybe White Lightning or The One I Loved Back Then.

This was my dads funeral song. He loved my mother until his death. She left him for his best friend. She sat behind me at the funeral. Everyone was silent, but her. She sobbed. She knew. He finally got the last word. I was glad I could help him. Thanks to George.

This is one of my husband’s favorite songs, he didn’t know he had died either . Way back when in the south we would put a black wreath on the home of the person who passed. I only know that because my Granny told me about the tradition

George Jones. The finest country singer America has ever had. Period. All country singers would love to be able to even approach George's singing ability. You either have that voice or you don't. You cannot train yourself to get this good. It is a gift. Pure and simple. George pulls you into his song with such an emotional pull and soaring voice that is impossible to forget. RIP George Jones.

You guys missed the point of the song. You should have played with lyrics. The reason he stopped loving her is because he is dead. They placed a wreath upon his door and soon they will carry him away he stopped loving her today. This is probably the best country song ever made but you have to listen to lyrics. You guys need to react to the song again and please listen to lyrics. It will put tears in your eyes. Many country artist consider this song the best country song of all time. I was hoping that you would get it. George Jones made a mistake in the live version and he flubbed the lines. This song is too great for you to miss please listen to the song again

@@sheilamatthews7349 I think they also miss the context of it, because in a lot of ways people don't put funeral wreaths on the doors in many places in the country anymore. So it's really not something that their generation grew up with or has been exposed to. They said they're not familiar with country, so they didn't grow up and what will be considered the deep South. That's where this would have been a regular thing for someone like maybe their grandparent to have done. So they would have had the exposure then through an older family member. I'm a New Yorker, but I'm also a GenXer who is raised with parents who were 40 years older than me. So I was exposed to this because of the fact that my parents were much older than my friends. I was born in Brooklyn and raised out on Long Island. BUT it was something we did when my grandfather died. We drove out there and put a wreath on the front of his apartment door in NYC. I think also that they like the music for its quality of how the instruments are played and how they come together. But in some ways they missed it with the content and how literal it actually was. They've really just listen to other songs that weren't as straightforward as this, and none that had to do death. So I think that's kind of why this one through them off a bit.

Yep... they thought she went to his house and then he was finally over her. Missed what happened. I have a personal attachment to this song. My moms boyfriend called our home after they broke up and spoke to me and asked me to tell my mom to please listen to this song. He had a massive heart attack at work that night and sadly passed away. It was as if he knew..... Love you possum.

@@misstlc7136 Honey... I truly believe that he knew. People who are together for a long time even though they break up. They still have a connection, it's almost like they have a psychic bond. Trust me, I'm speaking from my own life experience. I always seem to get a feeling within myself when my ex-fiance who I pretty much known forever is in trouble. We met at 13, started dating at 15, and we're together on and off for almost 20 years. It's just something in your heart, when you get a strange feeling that you know, then you just know~if that makes sense. I really do believe that in his heart, he felt that he needed to square up everything with her & and clear the record about where he stood with everything between them. ❤️❤️❤️

"They placed a wreath upon his door". It used to be tradition to put a wreath of black flowers on the door of a home where a family member had died. "And soon they'll carry him away" the pall-bearers will carry him in his casket.

Funeral homes still put a wreath on your door in South Carolina...but it's a wreath of white flowers, and always "Quiet Zone" signs a few houses away each direction, that's to slow and tone it down out of respect, so then you always look to see who has a wreath on the door. White is symbolic in the South of having passed. At my great-grandmothers for Mother's Day, all the women wore a red rose corsage if their mom was still alive, and a white rose corsage if deceased. And IDK if this is done everywhere, but if you're going down the road and a funeral procession of cars start to pass, we always pull to the shoulder and stop until all of the cars pass...they always have their lights on so you know it's ended. To this day we still do those things here.

In my family, the body is returned home the night before service and burial. There is a wake, a black wreath is on the front door. Today people think it's creepy, but it's actually comforting and provides closure. She came to see him in the casket.

Or, possibly, they're just listening to a new song for the first time ever in front of an audience (probably after being up all night with the new baby) and happened to miss those lines. They didn't comment on the guy being "carried away" either and that's not at all generational. I think they just didn't catch the second half of the hook and that minimized their context for the rest of the song. For a lot of my favorite bands, I could sing you their entire catalog, front to back, in my sleep, standing on my head, with one lip tied behind my back NOW but the first handful of times that I heard songs from them, I guarantee you I only picked up ~45% of the words.

Add to that, I hate to say it, lack of appreciation of different demographics... and that runs both ways. I remember long before I retired, we co-workers discussed the previous night's TV shows. The black folks not only had never seen Seinfeld (then the #1 hit show), but had never heard of him. That's just one example. Country music is more diverse now. Certainly not enough, though.

Yeah, “he said I’ll love you til I die…” and he only stopped loving her because he died...”they placed a wreath upon his door”, and “soon they’ll carry him away”. She came back for his wake/funeral - the narrator wondered if she would, and hoped that he finally got over her, because he died. It’s a song about how steadfast love can be, even if it’s one-sided, although she came back when he passed, so she probably felt something for him - but she left him alone for a long time, yet he loved her until he died. It’s incredibly sad and poignant.

I attended the 1980 Grammy Awards Show. With my very own ears, I heard the most GORGEOUS, multi-layered/ complex male voice that I ever hear live! George Jones' voice fascinated Vocal Coaches and Music Experts. He possessed amazing range, incredible power. He more often than not, HAD TO HOLD BACK. Jones did not have to strain to eke out a note......I don't beg anyone to believe me; I HEARD GEORGE JONES IN PERSON WITH MY OWN EARS......

It's really a shame that you didn't catch WHY he stopped loving her. THAT'S why there wasn't a dry eye in the crowd. This song reminds me of my dad. My mom divorced him after 37 years and it really tore him up. A couple of years later, he developed cancer and he was in the hospital where mom worked. She saw him every day and even took care of him when he was discharged up until he passed 9 months later. He never got over her until that last day. I'm 50 years old and this song still gets to me every time. Please re-listen to this song (album version, preferably) with the knowledge of it's true story he was telling. And by the way, you just played the best country song of all time. Congrats!

There is nobody left that can still bring "REAL" country music back to it's roots. All the current "so-called" country performers are reusing old 70's and 80'd rock rifts with a fake twang in their voice. None of them know what real country music is all about. Yeah, there is that Goosebump moment in the song when you realize he's talking about his old friend died and then it moves on to the funeral setting but it's just so poignant. It's a story of unrequited love. As far as its popularity, when he was married to Tammy Wynette, who is someone else you should really really really check out, they were regarded as the king and queen of country music.

As a widower, this song hits hard. I couldn’t listen to it for a couple of years after my wife died. I think it’s one of the most beautiful country songs ever. That an old violin from Johnny Paycheck.

@@jsjazz12 I didn't mean to imply that you didn't. I just see so many young reactors miss things like the guy in this song dieing that it can sometimes bother me. Dirt Road Anthem is a big part of that because I get so aggravated with the swerving like I'm George Jones line being treated like a through away line, and there are a plethora of other things. The man was so much a part of building the genre but so many miss all of who he was influenceing his music. That comment wasn't aimed at you so much as your comment was a good one to leave the reply too. I'm sorry I made you feel like I was singling you out.

George Jones is among the country music royalty going back to the 50s. His nick name was The Possum. The gist of the song is that he promised to love her until he died. She left him. He stopped loving her because he died, which is the reason for putting a wreath on his door and carrying him away.

To answer their question, he was one of the top country artist of all time, I think he charted songs in six decades. This was a #1 among many but probably the one most remembered and considered one of the best country songs ever. Not sure you realized he was singing about a guy dying and that's what made the song so emotional.

Lol Jordan asks, “Was George Jones super popular??” Not only was George Jones popular even other country singers list him at the top of their list as one of, if not, the best country singer ever. Someone asked Johnny Cash who his favorite singer was and he replied “You mean besides George Jones?” Waylon Jennings once said “If we could all sound like who we wanted to, we would all sound like George Jones.” And the list goes on and on with all the fans including other singers who consider George Jones one of, if not, the greatest country singer of all time. He had a bumpy career due to alcohol and drug abuse but nothing could keep the fans away. He even made fun of himself with a song called “No Show Jones” because he was bad about not showing up to shows due to being drunk. Something that would cause most fans to never want to see other artists. But the love fans had for him could never be stopped by anything. His career lasted from 1953 up till the year he died in 2013. Y’all haven’t seen anything yet. Look up duets of him and ex-wife Tammy Wynette. Look up the songs “The Grand Tour”, “The Window Up Above”, “She Thinks I Still Care”, “The Door”, and so many I can’t list them all. The man was an amazing singer.

Please go back and listen again-even report to us again that you understand what the true meaning is in the song WIDELY CONSIDERED TO BE THE GREATEST COUNTRY SONG EVER WRITTEN. A WREATH UPON HIS DOOR-it was the custom to place a wreath on the door of the recently deceased, at least through calling hours and the funeral!

Oh my goodness. I'll never forget Vince Gill and Patty Loveless performing Go Rest High on That Mountain at George's funeral. Poor Vince cried through most of it. George was so loved.

I saw Vince Gill with Brian white couple weeks after his wife asked for a divorce. He cried to most of that concert, but it was obviously uncontrollable during I still believe in you. Been 17 years since my divorce and I still can't listen to country music.

I can't believe you guys missed the entire point of the song. I love you guys but what part of "They put a wreath upon his door" did you not understand? He died and that is why he stopped loving her. And for the record, that song is generally considered to be the greatest song Country song of all time and Jones is considered by many to be the greatest Country vocalist of all-time.

This is one you need to hear the studio version… the part where you find out he died, there are studio strings that sounds like the old man’s heart flying up to heaven. It’s heart wrenching. George Jones was amazing. RIP.
