A big Smokey Robinson (who co-wrote it) hit in the mid-1960s age of Soul Music. She re-interpreted it and sang it from a woman's view. She made a huge hit of it again as pop-country-rock ballad. The 1970s was the era of woman auteur-singer, but Linda wasn't a song write. She's just the best female singer of the past 50 years!

Linda could literally sing anything. I saw her in concert in the late 1970s and she sounded great live. Other great songs that she recorded are "Long Long Time", "Someone to lay down beside me", "when will I be loved" and "Tumblin' Dice" by the Rolling Stones. She did a great cover of it.

Linda Ronstadt has an incredible, powerful voice. I don’t know if you have done a reaction to the original version by Smokey Robinson and The Miracles, if you haven’t - you should. Another version that is so good is Adam Lambert’s version when he was on American Idol. When Smokey Robinson writes a song, he tells a story and that is one of the things that I love about his music. So good…just so, so, so good!

Love Linda, she definitely moved to beat of her own drum. Loved her faith in herself in the face of her label telling her if she did something (Like make a Latin album, classical standards, which both went multi platinum, in fact the Latin album is the largest selling Latin music album in American History.) it would her career. Opera, she did it, Broadway, she did it. Just a legendary performer.

This is a prime example what you get when you take the genius of a Smokey song with voice and talent of Linda. The is also a recording that you have to listen to multiple times. The band's instumental back up is wonderfu. The harmonies blend in and come in at the right times. The arrangement is spot on. The latter you can really hear when she sings, "the smile is my make-up, ever since my break up". And, again, thank you Smokey for that rhyme.

I saw Linda in concert at Jones Beach. The Neville Brothers opened for her. An amazing memorable show. Ronstadt has released 24 studio albums and 15 compilation or greatest hits albums. She charted 38 US Billboard Hot 100 singles. Twenty-one of those singles reached the top 40, ten reached the top 10, and one reached number one ("You're No Good"). Ronstadt also charted in UK as two of her duets, "Somewhere Out There" with James Ingram and "Don't Know Much" with Aaron Neville, peaked at numbers 8 and 2 respectively and the single "Blue Bayou" reached number 35 on the UK Singles charts. She has charted 36 albums, ten top-10 albums, and three number 1 albums on the US Billboard Pop Album Chart.

Smokey Robinson both co-wrote and made it a hit originally; he does great with it for a guy; but Linda Ronstadt is the greatest female voice of the second half of the 20th century, perhaps outclassed only by Maria Callas from the first half of the century. Maybe. The male backup singer is likely Andrew Gold, who had two monster hits, the anthem-like "Lonely Boy" and monster hit "Thank You for Being a Friend."

Gorgeous important pipes especially Live. Powerful and tender surrounded by devoted talented players. Unadorned authentic heartbreak. Very rare songbird. Linda...sigh.
