It was just before the Soviet fall, an effort to allow a little Western stuff in for those other than the Party elite and hold power a bit longer. It was a kind of Monsters of Metal, Metallica being 1 of 4 bands to play. The helicopters flying back and forth were trying to stir up the air as there was worry the people in the middle would not get enough oxygen - there were several deaths reported, in fact, but none officially chalked up to asphyxiation.

After they run the tickets out, the rest of people that show-up got in for free, at this rock/metal monster concert not just Metallica played also AC/DC, Black Panther & The Crows among other.. 54 people were reported death (not sure how many injuries), helicopters were trying to cool the heat from so many fans & people side by side, imagine you are in the middle of such crowd and need to go to toilet.. the army soldiers were overwhelmed and eventually as we seen on the clip some of them took of caskets & clothes to flag them above the crowd.. But this is only the 5 or 6 position of biggest live concerts, the biggest was Rod Stewart who was performing to a 4,6 millions of people and 2,3 & 4 positions Jean Michele Jare live concerts..

No way! A thunderbirds flyby at low altitude would blank out all the concert noise! That being the case, the Richter scale would be going off all the time. Anyway, the Richter scale measures earthquakes (earthly vibrations) with hundreds of millions of tons of pressure sending vibrations significantly more powerful than a stage full of speakers creating a meager 126 decibels!

This concert was the monsters of rock. The first concert after the fall of the Soviet Union, and it was free. 1.6 million people. 50+ deaths were said to have happened during the concert which I would say is a shame, but there were no reasons said as to what those deaths were from. Either way, to see a crowd that big, just amazes everyone.

That black kite shaped guitar the lead singer is using is his trademark guitar. He has it in cream/white and silver I think aswell. Info on this concert. 1.6million people, 53 people died. This was set at the Russian Airfield, they used helicopters overhead to create draft for all the people, as you imagine the heat 1.6million people would create. This was a gift to the people by the government this concert, right after the Iron Curtain came down on USSR /the Soviet union. In reality, western music wasn't allowed to be listened to, if you were caught with any you'd be hung, shot or jailed for it. Very intensely strict regime. Most hadn't seen or heard of western or other music apart from classical before this. The soldiers are the soldiers from the regime, who were there to crowd control, but most were like "no way, were with them and gonna enjoy ourselves."

Supposed to be the first open-air rock concert to register on the Richter Scale. Not because they (may) have outdone 'The Who' Guinnes Book of World Records at 126 decibels. Apparently they just stopped counting at 1.6 million said "Nyet" and just opened the gates. So, ~2 million people, all jumping, is 150,000 tons. That's roughly one thousand blue whales. (Cue Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy references "Ground, wonder if it will be friends with me..")

You might check out Metallica's S&M album. Which actually stands for Symphony & Metal. The band was joined by the San Francisco Symphony - and no, Metallica did not go unplugged. If you like the driving bass drum intro for Enter Sandman, you will love hearing the bass drum kick joined by timpani, kettledrums. When they did this live, orchestra members were scared half to death by the waiting crowd roaring at them - not the reaction their regular audiences give them. The joint collaboration was the idea of the symphony conductor, who wrote the music for how his people would join into Metallica's songs.

Supposedly the helicopters flying over were used as giant fans to help keep people from heat stroking. Also did you notice the towers in the distance? They were speaker towers that had to be set up with a delay because the sound would get so distorted at those distances. I went to many general admission concerts in the late 80's through when they went to all reserved seating. General admission concerts were awesome

If I remember correctly, this was the monsters of rock concert that happened just after the fall of the Soviet Union. It was the first concert where bands from outside of the country were allowed to play. This concert was in the top 5 largest concerts in the world, coming in at 2.6 million people. The military had to bring their choppers in and hover over the people to stop them from getting heat stroke. There were over 50 people that died at that concert from heat stroke, or being trampled. James Hatfield the lead vocalist for Metallica said that the energy there was like getting struck by a lightning bolt.

This part of the Monsters of Rock shows where many more acts took to that stage. A quick search provided a bit of info. "Organizers estimated that the festival actually drew an audience of more than 700,000 people. To oversee the event, there were 11,000 soldiers, police officers, hired security guards, and riot police." "According to Moscow City Police records, 51 individuals were hospitalized during the festival, 49 were detained for disturbing the peace, and about 100 were sent to the drunk tank. Exact figures on the total number of injuries at the concert are not available."

This was free and the only place large enough was a military airfield. Those military helicopters flying overhead were armed and were there to protect the stage and would have fired on the crowd if they got out of hand. This was a truly historic event (this video is in the Library of Congress) as this was the end of the Cold War (Berlin Wall had just been torn down 2 years earlier) the end of the Soviet Union and this was the 1st time western bands were allowed to play in the USSR. They say there were 1.6 million people - but they don't mention they stopped counting at 1.6 million. During the next song Creeping Death that entire crowd jumped simultaneously yelling Die! Die! Die! to the USSR (and they meant it!) and set off seismometers miles away!

That guitar you love, it's a Gibson Explorer. I had one way back in the 90s. Black with a white pick guard. Loved that thing

metallica is a rabbit hole to go into ... my favourite song is the version of creeping death done at that concert.. having 1.6 million russians yelling "die die die" is insane... but really .. a lot of their early works pre-90s are great. some stuff later is good, but different. their 80's stuff was on another level.

There was a couple in Russia that did an interview last week on the news. They were the last people out of the gates and had just gotten home from the concert and couldn't believe to hear that the bass player quit the band and they had a new bassist.

The biggest crowd I've been in was like 110,000 in over 100 degree heat at Ozzfest and it was insane. They had firehoses spraying into the crowd and security handing out water bottles. I can't even imagine a crowd that size!

This concert was amazing; they were playing in Moscow, the first time a group of western bands had been allowed to play in the former Soviet Union (this is why you see the soldiers and the helicopters, the authorities still believed that this would taint their population with 'western influence'.) The fact that some of the troops placed there to keep the crowd cowed and under control were also just vibing with the music shows how much western soft power (good music, jeans, freedom in general) had to do with the end of the Cold War going our way. (I know this stuff first hand, while this show was happening I was stationed in Korea facing off the North, who still haven't given up on the Cold War).

Yes, I remember that gig, which was a big deal in Moscow. I was a freshman student at the time. A couple of guys from my group in the university were at the gig and told legends. I remembered that some people were throwing empty bear bottles (made of glass) in the crowd, and this was dangerous. And the police (militsia) acted quite toughly.

I've seen Metallica live 4 times in my life. The first time I was 15 years old I think. It is indeed a very intense experience even if there isn't a million people there (biggest one I was at was about 60.000 from what I have heard).

Its that level of energy that gets generated from the crowds as a collective that scares the powers that be....this is why they worked to stop these types of concerts from happening. Its a reminder of how powerful ancient people were as societies before the current manipulations we see now. Music caught them off-guard now they have worked overtime to dumb it back down with smaller crowds.

It ubruptly ended because if was followed by a different song. A song which is faster and heavier than that. For people new to Metal, i always suggest to start reacting to songs that are in their commercial album(Black Album) And then slowly vet to the faster stuffcalled (Thrash Album). Or Live Performances. Coz Metal is great live. 1. Fade To Black( Live in Moscow) 2. Sad but True.(Music Video) 3. Nothing Else Matters(Music Video) 4. One(Music Video) 5. Master of Puppets(Live in SD)
