It's absolutely an OST song. You literally play through this in the second game as backstory presentation for the first one. The main character is as confused by it as you are, which is part of the charm :P - he suddenly gets put into a musical retelling of his life within a late night talk show working on dream logic. The level is basically set up as an elaborate stage with parts of the live action footage playing on LCD screens, with the performers giving you directions and so on. It's incredibly creative.

I've seen a few comment of context below, but I'll try to compile this a bit more. Alan Wake 2 is Survival Horror game set in the "Remedy Verse" (think MCU for Remedy games). The band "Old Gods of Asgard" is a fictional band in the world of Alan Wake, that plays a rather big role in both Alan Wake 1 and 2. At one point during the gameplay of Alan Wake 2, the character Alan Wake gets thrown into a weird musical like "live" performance of this song, that essentially recaps the the story of Alan Wake 1, while the player has to fight his is way through enemies. The performance is hosted by a character called "Warlin Door" On stage is the (real) band "Poets of the Fall". They are essentially the in-game band Old Gods of Asgard (they create the music and play the younger versions). The actor performing the "dance" in the middle is Ilkka Villi, the actor for the face (not the voice) of Alan Wake. The two people singing at the front are David Harewood the actor for the character "Warlin Door" and Matthew Porretta the voice actor for Alan Wake (his singing is supposed to be Alan singing, which is why you can see Ilkka mouthing the words.) At some point during the performance (6:28), Sam Lake, the creative director for Remedy Games joins the dance performance on stage. In general, Sam Lake loves to take an active role in his games (He is the face for Max Payne for example). He is also an all around goofball when it comes to his games, and just want's to have fun, so him joining the dance like this is completely on point for him. Sam Lake is also the reason why we even got to see this spectacle of a performance (both in-game and live), cause he was the one who pushed for it to be kept in the game, after the brass of remedy wanted to remove it. Edit: Btw, at first glance it might not look like it (not at all actually xD), but the musical is actually weirdly fitting for the overall theme and story of the game. It makes a lot of sense.

Remedy games tend to be very serious storylines with very silly moments. For example, early in Alan Wake II, you go to a diner to interview witnesses to a murder. When you walk in, you can stop to watch an in game universe ad for a local tour company. During the ad, one of the characters says “But Ilmo, wasn’t that area blocked off by the government?” “Yes Jakko, but here, we have a special saying: F**k the government, we have bolt cutters!” It’s fantastic.

Watching the official music video will give a bit more context but it is a whole section in game and is an overview of events in the first game from what I hear. I spoiled myself watching some gameplay of this as I had no idea how this would fit into the game, but only saw a little. I will get round to playing this one day. Another one you should check out is "Take Control" by Old Gods of Asgard from the astray maze in the game Control, which is in the same universe as Alan Wake.

The happy one that looks like he's living a dream near the end is the Director of the game. Seeing him there was the highlight of the game awards for me.

regarding whether or not alan wake 2 is a good game, it did win 3 awards at the game awards 2023 for best direction, best art direction and best narrative and overall it has had stellar reception and reviews. haven't played it myself but considering that i think it might be pretty good. no clue if you would like it though

In the course of the game, Alan Wake is stuck in "The Dark Place", and while trying to write his way out of the Dark Place he ends up in a talk show, and during one of the segments Warlin Door presents "Herald of Darkness", written and performed by the house band, The Old Gods of Asgard. The entire song, which is about 14 minutes long, recaps the first game. One thing to note, the mo-cap actor and voice actor for Alan Wake are different people, which is why the guy in the lineup in lip-syncing the guy standing to the side. Matthew Porretta, the voice actor, played Will Scarlet O'Hara in "Robin Hood: Men in Tights" and went on the play Robin Hood in a TV series.

The question of "is Alan Wake 2 a good game", can be answered with a simple yes. Just look at the Game Awards. Even though Baldur's Gate 3 dominated, Alan Wake 2 won 3 awards. Best Narative, Best Game Direction and Best Art Direction. And just to state my opinion, Alan Wake 2 is my personal Game of the Year 2023. I haven't had as much fun with a game in ~10 years. It's an absolutely phenomenal game. That is, if you are into games with weird and convoluted stories. The story, as well as the theory crafting for the story was incredibly fun to me. Alan Wake 1 is not a must if you want to play the game, though if you wanna get into the theory crafting, you'd have to do a bit of research on story elements. That's what I did. I neither played control, nor Alan Wake 1 and instead decided to let the game guide me to questions, and try to find an answer myself through searching for information on the other games.

When the in-game sequence happened where this plays, I was stunned and honestly couldn't sleep after, best part of a game I've ever played.

The Alan Wake games are psychological horror games. This is a chapter in Alan Wake II called "We Sing". Without too many spoilers it's a rock opera that sums up the 1st Alan Wake game while Alan is trying to escape an alternate realty called "The dark place". Alan is a writer whos writing becomes reality. Alan Wake is part of the RemedyVerse which includes Alan Wake I and II, Control and Quantum Break. The blond guy dancing at the end is Sam Lake. He is the creative director of Remedy games and also the motion capture model of Max Payne. He also played a parody character of Max Payne in the game named Alex Casey. They do not have the rights to Max Payne to use him anymore. The band is Poets of the Fall playing their in game personas of The Old Gods Of Asgard. They have provided music for many Remedyverse games including Control and Quantum Break. The guy that started the performance is David Harewood playing Mr. Door. He is a person that can travel between realities. David Harewood also played Martian Manhunter if you're familiar. The other guy singing with him is Matthew Porretta. He is the voice actor for Alan Wake and also the voice actor for Doctor Darling in Control. He was also in Robinhood: Men in tights as Will Scarlet Ohara. He shares the role of Alan wake with Ilkka Villi. The guy on stage is Ilkka Villi who is the motion capture model for Alan Wake. He shares this role with Matthew Porretta. The entire thing is a shortened version of what happens in game. The in game chapter can take about 30 minutes to play through and it's an interactive rock opera concert with live action gameplay and they also released a music video for all the musical segments that shows them doing the dance better that is 9 1/2 minutes long. This live concert is actually only the 1st and 2nd parts of "We Sing". Also a little backstory: When everyone played this part in the game it was a very well recieved surprise. It was refreshing and fun and the music is amazing. Many call it the best video game moment they've ever witnessed. I'm among them. They released the video for Herald of Darkness shortly after the game came out and the views on it skyrocketed instantly. People in the comments began hoping/wishing/praying that they would play this at the Game Awards and that Sam Lake would get on stage and do the HoD dance as well. A short time before the awards, Poets of the Fall announced they were coming to America from Finland to perform at the game awards. Everyone took this as they were going to perform Herald of darkness. Then it happened and Sam Lake got on stage as well. It was literally a dream come true for Alan Wake II fans. Alan Wake wrote himself into the game awards! Sam Lake is an example of what game companies and game developers should be like. He loves his creations and his fans so much that they made this happen for the fans. The entire chapter of "We Sing" was a labor of love as it was in constant threat of being cut from the final game. Sam Lake fought to keep it in the game and made this happen for the fans. You can literally see his unbridled joy and happiness to be on stage with the actors of his creation. It's so amazing.

At 6:59, YES. Everything you thought was right. But every Remedy game has one level, always connected to the Old Gods of Asgard, that is just a straight up heavy metal rock video. As for the two people on the side. The guy in the middle is the model for Alan Wake. But everyone at Remedy is EXTREMELY FINISH. When you react to "Take Control" from the Control game, I suggest you also react to "Control - Dr. Darling - Dynamite" . The song is less than 90 seconds long, so it would be a fun addendum. While "Take Control" is a song by "Old Gods of Asgard" or, in real life, "Poets of the Fall"; "Dynamite" is played by "Dr.Darling" an in-world weird and positive character. Why am I suggesting you watch it? Because the actor playing "Dr. Darling" is "Matthew Porretta, the "white host-looking guy" . While the face of Alan Wake is "Ilkka Villi", Matthew Porretta is his voice in the series. In Control, however, he gives both face and voice to Dr. Darling.

Nobody makes a game like Remedy Studios. They mix horror with the uncanny with a heavy dose of ridiculous. It just makes for an epic experience. The point this song appears in the Alan Wake 2 is probably one of the coolest moments I've had in a game. It's bonkers and I adore that Alan is just as confused as the player when it happens. As for the two men in suits that were singing the one on the left is an in game character that is a talkshow host and the one on the right is the voice actor for Alan Wake. You should watch the in game scene of this song. it's just epic. And if you want to see another similar scene Dynamite from Control was a precursor to Harold of Darkness.

The fact that this game and the Herald if Darkness pop bang emerged so close to the Girls Frontline Slow Shock Event which delves into a beloved characters past amidst captivity was so serene. A lot of named people died in that event on both sides and the one in question is up in the air before the twin towers over an uninhabitable radiation void to even high end mechanized units got bombed during the op. Point is im not sure Mica team could animate the absolute horror of what they describe in a vn setting if they had the Hoyoverse budget. But considering Girls Frontline 2 Exilium is making fully CG cutscenes im tempted to see how far they are willing to push by comparison considering how far and inhumane the original was and is willing to go to show the attrocities of war and actions to attain victory. Including a child bubbling and melting in your arms from collapse radiation. Anymore i see Herald of Darkness as a coping mechanism of scarred as fuck badass mommy wofe Ange being Nytofied and sharing a brain with the traitor doll RPK16 here on out cause at this point both english and every other server to my knowledge is caught up and awaiting recompense.

Overall the game has a really interesting selection of diegetic music ranging from classic rock to Finnish slow schlager, as well as varied styles in end-chapter music, on top of some super cool, more traditional orchestratic pieces. It is a trip, and a very underrated ost overall given the wild variety of genres and pieces in it.

Great choice. Like others said before, the original music video is something you should watch for a complete reaction. The whole OST is pretty good, so feel free to check the other songs. Those who know the Remedy universe know how special this live performance is. Many planets had to align for us to see something so "meta". 😄

I know you haven't played the game, but the humor here is that Alan (who was trapped in The Dark Place for 13 years) was thought to have escaped back into the real world relatively early on in the game, but he woke up still in The Dark Place. He even says something along the lines of "I know the rules now. No more tricks...." and then, sure enough, The Dark Place fucks with him by trapping him in a musical with even the beginning of the segment having Alan surprised saying "What the hell?!?" in a "dafuuuuuuuq?!?" kind of manner.... watch the IGN playthrough of this "Musical" segment to see how it all plays out

Remedy makes "weird games," and I mean this in the best sense possible. You're in for a novel time playing their games.

Alan Wake is about a bestselling writer oon a holiday to cure his writing block, it all goes wrong when he begins finding pages of a book he doesn't remember writing, and they're beeginning to come true, he fights against monsters made of darkness, using the light to fight them off. The second game continued the story and dwelved much deeper in the lore (Which, the devs have made spinoffs set in the same universe with tie ins to Alan Wake). THis song is from a scene where Alan is thrown into a musical recap of his life, fighting off these darkness monsters while the music video plays, it's so weird but so amazing.

Since I haven't seen it anywhere: The Keanu Reeves looking guy in the centre is the body model for Alan Wake, the guy on the side with the host is his voice (which is why he sings and the guy in the centre just lip syncs). :D

So the big thing to note here: You watched the wrong version for sure. Ignore the live version, and look up the official version. The sound quality is better, you get the slight story leak behind of what is going on, but with as little Spoilers as possible. You also get the full song: they didn't play the full song live due to time restrictions. But it's meant to be listened to as a story, not a song. The lyrics matter more than the song, because the lyrics are full backgrounds on Alan's history as a character. Remedy is the only game company that does live action to this degree. They are the only company who in their games mixes in purely live action into their game worlds. And even ties it all together. The Old Gods of Asgard is not a real band, they were a game band in Alan Wake's world in Bright Falls, the city of Alan Wake. The band playing the song is called Poets of the Fall, and Poets of the Fall is through all new remedy games. Old Gods of Asgard has 3 great songs, being Children of the Elder God which you should totally listen to, then The Poet and the Muse, and now Herald of Darkness, the Story of Alan Wake: The Musical. Poets of the Fall then ties in their other songs like War, My Dark Disquiet, and so many others to the OST's. Alan Wake is very much like Evil Within in the psychological aspect, but it's not as heavy on Horror UNTIL two. Alan Wake II is much more survival horror and fear driven, and it's a masterpiece. It deserved game of the year. Sam Lake is a masterful maker of his games, ever since Max Payne where he was the face of the protagonist, Max, but now, he's even starring in games as a side character.

Even though Alan Wake 2 includes a musical, a concept album and a short movie, plus it's actually pretty fun at times, it's still one of the best psychological / survival horror games thx to story & storytelling (also won Best Narrative at TGA 2023) which usually sucks in horror games/movies

Alan Wake 2 is VERY good and i find it so fucking scary, and i don't get scared. You don't need to play the first one to play the second. The games are indeed very dark, but all Remedy games have hilarious parts in them. They know when to bring some levity inn to let the player chill for a moment.

Baldur's Gate 3 is great too, don't get me wrong, But AW2 is clearly better in my eyes, the way it really builds on the first game, and also ties to other Remedy Games, either directly or indirectly (because of IP ownership)

But a brief description of Alan Wake is basically his reality is "made of dreams", like the lyric's say. It's about an entity (darkness) that takes over and starts warping reality and is using him to do it. So imagine this musical scene in the game as a nightmare that Alan can't escape from. Can you imagine anything more terrifying? Trapped in a musical about your life? XD that's an over simplification of it, to be sure, but if you enjoy horror, "zombies", and heavy storytelling, I think you'd like the game. Old Gods of Asgard is the alter ego, or in game personas played by the real band, Poets of the Fall! So if you liked that song, please look into more of their work! Poets of the Fall is my favorite band and I'd love to see you react to more of their music.

You should probably play alan wake in your spare time. At the very least, look up stuff about Alan Wake 1 and an in-between game, CONTROL, and then play Alan Wake 2. The song will make MUCH more sense.

You should play the game for yourself. It's really good.

Have you thought about buying a good mic? Or at least adjust the audio in a program. Every time you yell, which is mostly what you do, I have to turn the volume down. Then to hear the video you are referencing I then have to turn up the volume. I just think your videos would be better with better audio.

Alan Wake 2 is a Survival Horror game, released in 2023, the original was released 13 years ago and was a cult classic. The song appears in the game at a certain point. A fun fact: The white guy doing some of the vocals(not the guitarist) is the creative director of Remedy games(the developers of Alan Wake 2) and many people will recognize him as the original face of Max Payne from the game Max Payne. Alan Wake is part of a larger universe in the Remedy games universe along side "Control". There's so much passion in their games. The 3 games(Alan Wake 1, Control, and Alan Wake 2) are phenomonal, Control is a much more action based 3rd person shooter that's based on the SCP concept.
