They had to change the name since Motown owned the Jackson 5. Jermaine actually stayed with Motown being that he married the CEO's daughter. Berry Gordy's daughter Hazel. I believe the youngest Jackson Randy was a part of the group here.

This was such an amazing and prolific period for MJ, when he was still making soulful old school r’n’b before becoming a pop star with Thriller. You can make the most incredible mix just with the best songs from Destiny, Off The Wall and Triumph. My favourite period of his career, without a doubt.

You can add the their first album called “The Jackson’s” after they left Motown. It had “Enjoy Yourself” , Good Times, and Show You the Way to Go on it

MJ was a smooth criminal on this track. I could be wrong, but I believe this album was when they started doing a lot of their own production?

Yes, they went from The Jackson 5 to The Jacksons because Jermaine was loyal to Motown, so he went solo and the group moved to CBS/Epic...they also added their youngest brother Randy to the group.

This album was produced by The Jacksons. Prior to this they were always a product of the "house" production of their lords and masters at Motown and then for a few years under Gamble & Huff. They did 2 or 3 (albums) themselves (before Mike finally went solo), after having learned their production chops from an army of studio masters. (Production values a Motown and at Philadelphia Records were always top flight; across the board.) Funny you draw the Minnie Ripperton production comparison. I believe your ear is attuned to the lush and heavy string arrangements you hear dominating this song, which is probably done by Clare Fisher; a composer who was writing unbelievable string charts for lots of R&B artists in the 80s and 90s. When you get to some deep cuts on "Ask Rufus" and "Street Player" albums by Rufus and Chaka Kahn you'll hear some of the same thing. Especially on a cut called (pure coincidence) "Destiny" (on the Street Player album) and "Egyptian Song" (from Ask Rufus). (And may have worked on Minnie Ripperton's library but I never had enough of her material to confirm - wouldn't surprise me one bit.)

Motown owned the rights to the name "Jackson 5" so when the group changed record labels they could no longer use the name.

This has always been my all time favorite album from this group I have it on cd, vinyl, and cassette. I’m 22 and they were given to me by my father. This was the first time they wrote and produced all but one of the songs on the album. This was 1978 and they were never allowed to write or produce anything and they had been making albums for almost a full decade and released over 10 albums and were given the opportunity. They recorded this album in their home studio in Encino, CA. Fun fact: Minnie Riperton did a song together on her album a couple years after this.

Once they left Motown and added Randy to the group to replace Jermaine who stayed at Motown they changed the name to the Jacksons. I believe it was because Motown owned the name Jackson 5

Wow. As a young man, I always thought this was one of the great and underrated performances of Michael Jackson. I think the Jacksons produced this when they broke away from the great Gamble and Huff. Glad you reacted to it.

Another fave. I love any song that incorporates strings in the background. Clare Fisher arranged strings for a lot of R&B artists in the 70s, like Rufus & Chaka Khan, but I don't know if he did this one.

Strings can be beautiful indeed, but think of all the great R&B songs without them.
