If you liked the base player in this one, watch a few more live performances of theirs and you'll see him get up ontop of the double bass and ride it while playing like a madman. The balance and skill is insane. They were a staple of the Aussie rock scene for so long. Still hold the record for most consecutive years getting a song in the Triple J Hottest 100.

The Big Day Out was legendary. Dave Grohl said it was the best tour he had ever done. It was six shows in three weeks. So the bands started calling it 'The Big Day Off'. Metallica played one of the last festivals, and they had a whole mini-city built at every location. It was Metallica-World. So one night Lars Ulrich emerged went out and touched base with all the other bands, introducing himself and inviting them to a big party at their compound. So that night all the bands, excited as hell to be going to a Metallica party, assembled and made their way to Metallica-World. They got to the entrance and were swiftly turned away by the security goons. They heard the next day that Lars was sitting there by himself, wondering why nobody had come to his party.

Chris Cheney is an incredible guitar player. I have no doubt he was one of those kids who grew up honing his chops with heavy metal, but changed to ska-punk when metal stopped being cool. The Living End were part of that amazing wave of Aussie rock bands that exploded in the late 90s.

Scott Owen is the double bass player for The Living End, I have seen him live get up on that monster of an instrument and start bouncing on it like it is a pogo stick whilst still playing perfectly in time. They are all freaks of nature and Chris Cheney (the lead singer, guitarist) is a true gentleman. I met him at a gig years ago and have ran into him many times since and he is always humble, has remembered me each time we bumped into each other and was always down for a quick chat. Truly as down to earth a person as you can find!

Apparently, the living end were a big influence on the American band green day, who even mention them in one of their songs. First time I heard these guys in the 90's, I had long given up on the Aussie rock scene, believing it to be long gone and dead, so I was absolutely thrilled to hear them.

I saw Soundgarden at the 97 Melbourne BDO.1st time i saw living end was at a 3 day camp out music festival called The Falls which takes place over the NYE weekend. Iggy Pop headlined that one & he ushered in the new year performing I wanna be your dog. 19,000 punters camped out & out under the stars on a hot summer night. We used to have all kinds of music festivals back then. At Easter time we used to go to another one called Offshore, again a 3 day camp out with constant bands from both here & overseas, but the price of admission would get you entry into the festival grounds & entry into the Rip Curl Pro at Bells Beach. This brings back many cherished memories & i thank you both for that. Nice vid btw.

I worked at a Rock Above The Falls show late 90’s and around 4PM Regurgitator stopped a song and said “wtf is that !?” pointing to behind the crowd up the hill. It looked like smoke from a massive fire was coming towards the concert but it turned out to be fog. In the next 20 mins, the entire audience and stage was covered in fog and nobody could see farther than 4metres. The sun disappeared early and the temp dropped to psycho. It was one of the most uncomfortable gigs I’ve ever done. Freezing humidity. I hid on stage behind Janet’s bass amp during Spiderbait, to keep warm.

Yes Big Day Out is just like the Warped tour…. We had a Warped tour here also but not as big as the Big Day Out ( BDO ) I went to my first BDO in 1996 The last one I went to was 2014…. It had the best bands from Australia, but also had many international acts also which included bands such as Red hot chilli peppers, Pearl Jam, Foo Fighters, Nirvana, Metallica, Muse, Hole, Marilyn Manson, Blink 182, Violet Femmes, Tool….. and many others. It toured all capital cities in January every year. It folded after the original organisers went there separate ways. Since the finish of the BDO there hasn’t really been a Music Festival in Australia that really packs a punch…. There are some Festivals still but nothing compared to such a great Event.
