Wonderful reaction, Blessing! ❤ The Who is one of those legendary rock acts that completely shaped the industry. This is an epic track, but it's just one of multitudes they have delivered over the years. The group, which continues to deliver, is one year shy of their 60th anniversary! 😮

This song is even better if you’ve listened to the rest of the album, but at least to the personality-integration song that immediately precedes this one. It brings the 4 themes together in an amazing way.

Symphonic! "Love, Reign o'er Me" was the second single from The Who's sixth studio album, the double record rock opera, Quadrophenia, released in 1973. It was adapted to film in 1979, helping to inspire the mod revival movement of the early eighties. A few other choice cuts from that album include "5:15" (Five Fifteen), "The Real Me", "The Punk And The Godfather", "I'm One", and "Sea and Sand" among many others. Quadrophenia is a great album.

Quadrophenia arguably represents the zenith of the THE WHO, its finest hour as reflected in a rock opera/concept album. The band members were at the height of the their respective capabilities. In order to fully appreciate the album, its needs to be listened to in its entirety and the story of Jimmy, the wannabe Mod, understood. "Reign O'er Me" is Jimmy's swan song.

I want to say this song was popular around the time I was in early grade school and I heard it a ton. They were well loved. I really enjoyed your improvised harmonies there. That was great. I think the song might be in the key of D but either way you were kind of singing on the 5th which would be an A, and you then slightly augmented it like in the direction of a B flat but then right back down and it was perfect for it, and then you also brought in vibrato at the last second. Love it.

Greatest album of all time. Rain on me and love reign (like a king) over (o'er) me...genius. Townshend wrote everything and laid down all of the musical tracks by himself then presented the whole album to the band and said, "this is our next album".

1973 was a very good year, I remember saving up in anticipation of the release of this album buying it on release day and then playing it non-stop till I had learned every word by heart (about a week). 50 years later I still listen to it regularly. Absolute rock classic and a true rock opera.

This is just one masterpiece song off their Rock Opera concept double album Quadrophenia..It's worth listening to whole album for context...It's a story of "Jimmy" involved in a UK subculture Chronicling his dissatisfaction with life,work,love,home and family

Very nice reaction. The Quadrophenia album was a signature piece by The Who. It was engineered to be played in quadrophonic sound, the supposed next step up from stereophonic (or stereo), but as a sound concept, it never quite caught on (until surround-sound). Love (Reign O'er Me). The "O'er," as others have pointed out, is a contraction of "over" and is commonly used in verse. (You can hear it in The Star Spangled Banner - "... o'er the ramparts we watched..." "Reign" is a beautiful rendered pun, because the character wants to be ruled by love, and a prevailing theme of the song is rain, i.e., love raining over him. This is in my Top Five Rock songs of all time, and I can't rank those 1 through 5, because any of them, including this one, could be my No. 1 at any given time. It's just so flawless, as you point out. The construction, the theatrical presentation, the symphonics of it, the grittiness, the wonderful vocals, the commanding drums, the expressive guitar, and bringing all its discrete parts together into a true rock masterpiece. Thank you for your reaction. You combination of appreciation, enjoyment, and analysis is a rare thing and most welcome.

They use “o’er me” to reduce the number of syllables compared to “over me.” This is common in things like songs and poetry. Read the lyrics some time - they switch between “reign” and “rain” quite a bit. “Love, reign o’er me” is something like “love rule over me.” And of course it goes back and forth between Reign over me and Rain over me.

O'er is an old-timey English spelling, of 'over.' But the line is apparently 'rain on me' occasionally. My parents sat me down with this entire album when I was 10, since the band was about to tour with it and they wanted me to have the context in my head before we went. The whole album is FANTASTIC, and this closes it out - it has an even bigger punch with all that context before it (not to mention the melody finally getting its time to shine after being a leitmotif throughout the album).

When you see an apostrophe in the middle of a word, it takes the place of a letter, in this case the letter "V", so, the word is "Over".

This song was the finale of a 2 album concept lp... I think he commits suicide there on the beach after failing to get the girl, rejected by the mods, fired from his job, and being kicked out of his parents home! Heavy shit. I love Qdadraphenia lp, even more than the other major concept lp, Tommy. AND, it was made into a feature length movie, featuring Sting (from the Police), in a pivotal role as the dude our main character tried to emulate! Thanx to you Patreons, and you for covering this Blessing!!!
@SuperGForce01
@SuperGForce01 Жыл бұрын
He didn't commit suicide, just sent the scooter off the cliff. He'd become disillusioned and then discovering The Ace Face was merely a bellboy totally blew his mind. It was actually The Ace Face's scooter which he'd sent over. Bizarre as it sounds, the film begins with the ending. Jimmy walking at the start is after his meltdown on the cliffs. The movie then tells the story of what occurred leading up to his mad finale.

This song comes at a climactic point in the Rock Opera Quadrophenia. The main character Jimmy Cooper is at the point of suicide but he cries out for some kind of deliverance from his meaningless existence. It starts to rain and he feels like it’s a blessing from God that will give him the strength to go back and face his problems. The rain representing God’s love is from Meher Baba’s (Baba O’Riley) teachings. He was Pete Townshend’s spiritual guide. I think Roger (singer) relates to it as coming home to his family and farm after a long stint of touring. Just some ideas.
