Interestingly, while they are almost unheard of in the U.S., they are huge in Japan, much better known than Band-maid, Babymetal or Lovebites. Yes, you are right, US and UK may have invented rock and metal, but we have largely given up on doing anything new in a long time. The creative fire is in Japan, Eastern Europe and Scandinavia now.

OK, so let's go a bit deeper. Waggaki is a 8 pieces band. All of them are masters of their respective instrument (and some can play other instruments). Suzuhana Yuko: singer, pianist, also trained in japanese sword dance (she does it on several live performances). She's one of the trio who created this band together with Daisuke and Kiyoshi. Machiya: lead guitar, backing vocals. He's a well known and talented studio player, known for his fast playing. Nearly all title where he's playing with a mask were written for his solo project. Asa: bass guitar, also a well known vocaloid composer. Wasabi: battery Ninagawa Beni: tsugaru shamisen, that's the 3 string instrument with a banjo-like sound. Legen is saying that after the initial shamisen player left she went to see them on a rehearsal and said "I'm the new band member". Seems she wasn't wrong as that was more than 7 years ago. Yeah, the song is basically a callback to WWII Japan. The old retired men trying to appeal to the younger generation at the time with honor and the glory they could find in the battlefield. Throughout the war the propaganda remained firm and unchanging despite the massive losses they were suffering and just throwing more young bodies into the war. The song basically repeats the propaganda and calls out that the reality was very different and all that awaited them is death. All the hopes and dreams that were promised were not found basically.

For the metal heads they might not seem heavy enough, but this band is melting the hearts of fans of every genre. They want to present the world some Japanese traditions, also make those popular again in the young Japanese generation. Their first album consists of vocaloid covers only. "Senbonzakura" is in it, obviously their most popular song, but from there on they make original work only. I wont repeat the suggestions of others, as i agree with them, but i will add more. I know it's been a year since you did this, and you've probably figured this out by now, but "wagakki" isn't a specific instrument. It's a general term that refers to the group of instruments associated with traditional Japanese music, or Japanese folk music.

It looks like Utaku Ryukko is becoming the Anne / Gabriel (The Nightwish army's official heralds) unofficial-official messenger for Wagakki Band. Every time I go to unload a WB knowledge bomb on a reactor, I see UR has already been and done, and Hiawatha is not far behind. I would add some different songs to the list, but I have to agree that: - the live shows are even better than the official music videos, which are generally beautiful pieces of visual and auditory art. - Symphonic Night Vol 2 is a great view with high quality visuals and sound, and great performances with a full orchestra backing. - Amy still has some chops, but Yuko outshone her in the Evanescence duet / cover, and their 'Sakura Rising' duet is surprisingly good and uplifting (and I love Amy and Evanescence, so the Amyphiles can save their breath - not listening). - My pick from the recent albums, however, would have to be 'Ignite', but I'm an old punk. I recently found a video of Machiya and Asa singing an acoustic duet and I had that deja vu feeling that everyone has when they realised that Marco from Nightwish (and Troy) are both amazing vocalists as well as Floor. It was the same with Machiya and Asa. They were awesome, and easily put on an outstanding performance without Yuko (and Wasabi played a wooden box, and hit a baby cymbal and chime with his bare hands. Kiyoshi did Kiyoshi things.) I'm not saying Yuko isn't amazing, because she is, but the guys are great singers too, especially that display from Machiya - respect. This band are fast becming a superpower and it's been criminal that their old record company has not made it easy for them to be 'discovered' outside of Japan. They could be superstars everywhere by now, and we could all be painting kanji on our backs and faces and wearing kimonos to work (if you don't already). Australian division out.
