Hi all welcome back to another video Dereck Reacts back at it again! This time around we take a look at a first time reaction made possible via PATREON with Alain Chamfort and his song Manuréva. Partnering up with Claude Francois and Serge Gainsbourg, this song is an absolute stunner! See my bananas go wild!

@@MegaLink888 Yes! I was a teen at that time. This sudden disappearance strongly hit people's mind then. Alain Colas was a superstar in French sailing during the 1970's. He had won several competitions. The fact he died on the high seas without any single piece of his boat "Manureva" floating anywhere at the surface of water created the legend instantly. "Manureva" probably sank in a whole in the depths of ocean. So, this song is a beautiful tribute to a man who was truly a winner having such persistence in his aims. It was a true reflection of what Colas had been in his life: it quickly became a smash hit in French-speaking Europe & Canada. It stayed at the top of charts for several weeks in winter 1979-80. As Derek said in his video the extended version that was on the album is quite interesting to listen to.

Hi Dereck, for you : Manureva is a Tahitian word meaning "the bird of the journey". It is the name of the highest point of Rurutu Island in French Polynesia. It can be used according to the following uses: Manureva is a 1960 short film directed by Claude Pinoteau This name was used by Alain Colas who named his trimaran (ex-Pen Duick IV). It was on board this boat that he disappeared on November 16, 1978 during the Route du Rhum. This drama inspired Serge Gainsbourg who wrote the lyrics of the song Manureva in 1979 for Alain Chamfort. In 2007, this track was "remixed "by Art Meson under the title manureva 2007.

Hello Dereck, In fact, it's Jacques Dutronc who has discover Alain Chamfort. Claude François and Gainsbourg then helped him to make a name for himself. Initially the song was called "Adieu California" (Farewell California). But Chamfort asked Gainsbourg to rework his text because Alain found that these lyrics were too similar to other titles released at the same time such as "So far away from L.A." by Nicolas Peyrac or "I love America" by Patrick Juvet. Besides, when I listen to "Manuréva", I can't help drawing a parallel with Patrick Juvet, of which I offered you a reaction there a long time ago on "Où sont les femmes" (Where are the women) and "I Love America" (the latter title ranked in American hit parade at the time and was a worldwide disco success). So, you should try Patrick Juvet if you want play this banana jingle again! :))) In all case, thank you for this new epic reaction ...

On YT you can find the original (just look for «Alain Chamfort - Bambou») and the remix «Alain Chamfort - Bambou (Pilooski/Jayvich Reprise)». Chamfort also wrote a very beautiful and touching song about his young daughter (she was 3 at the time). It’s titled «Géant» (Giant), listening to it often brings tears to my eyes.

Hi Dereck! So you've gotten around to reacting to my favorite French male singer, Alain Chamfort (his real name is Alain Legovic). I met him a few years ago in Nîmes, my home town in Southern France near the Mediterranean at a book-signing salon and it was a very moving, emotional moment for me, as I'd been listening to his songs for some 40 years. We had a lovely, friendly conversation during which I told him his songs had been the very soundtrack of my life, especially "Souris Puisque C'Est Grave" and "Traces de Toi", and also "Paradis", "Rendez-Vous", "L'Ennemi Dans La Glace", "L'Amour Samplé", "Qu'est-ce que t'as fait de mes idées noires?", and countless others to this very day. He's still singing and has never stopped his career. He's a real dandy and gentleman, elegant and extremely humble and shy. A great composer and singer. A true artist. Keep up the good work and take care, Dereck.

Minimalist song about the lost ship Manureva, that can resonate to an other minimalist and last words from Louis the 17th (Louis XVII) last words before his death were also asking if people had news about "La Pérouse" sailor and navigator equivalent of James Cook. Concerning La pérouse, the French scientist expedition did find out centuries after in 2008 what happened to the ships from La pérouse sank on an Island actually not far from Nouméa. Before getting massacred by local inhabitants. ( For the record, English navigator Captain Edwards did pass to the Islands 200 years ago, "on 13 August 1791, he observed smoke signals rising from the island. Edwards, single-minded in his search for and convinced that mutineers fearful of discovery would not be advertising their whereabouts, ignored the smoke signals and sailed on" (wikipedia) So who knows, perhaps we will know one day what happened to Manureva as well. There is something tragic, historic, hope, despair and sense of travel in these songs.

Great song with a nice synth arrangement. With a bit of sadness due to the string machine. I was sure you will notice the bass, typical disco bassline. The album "Poses" includes other good songs, especially 2 ballads "Géant" and "Palais royal".

But... This music is not from Gainsbourg... it's from Alain Chamfort himself. Gainsbourg only wrote the lyrics. And "Mon légionnaire" is not from Gainsbourg. He just made a cover. 😉

Hello Dereck, Alain Chanfort is a superb artist of great gentleness and kindness who has produced very beautiful songs that I let you discover. Also to discover, Murray Head "one night in bangckok" vevo version, there is a lot of synth. Also Jean-Michel Jarre the king of electro music of the 80s and Cerrone also the king of the french touch, electro disco which inspired and launched this style of music, kiss from France

I like Alain Chamfort a lot. He's a discreet person, not as flashy as other performers. But his work is always impeccable, just like him. I particularly like "Bambou" and "Chasseur d'ivoire"(both from the same album as Manureva), "La fievre dans le sang", "Traces de Toi" (great video), "Le temps qui court" (this one is an adaptation of the Barry Manilow song "Could it be magic", later reprised by Donna Summer). Happy listenings!

Other singers got great songs composed by Serge Gainsbourg : "Pull marine", sung by Isabelle Adjani, "Quoi" sung by Jane Birkin. And by the way, "Message personnel" sung by Françoise Hardy, composed by Michel Berger may by reacted to also.

Once again, I love you Dereck... Oh my god, I love this song and when I was a child, I was in love with Alain Chamfort... And he's still a beautiful man... He composed the music (I'm not sure, but he usually composes his songs) but the one who wrote the first lyrics on it was not right for him, he didn't like it... Then he asked to Serge Gainsbourg, a great great artist I regret, to help him to write new lyrics... Manureva , a lost boat... This song was a very big success in our country, always on the radio, I remember... Thanks Dereck, a big surprise for me, love you 😘
