I've always known the name Stevie Ray Vaughan because of his incredible skill at the guitar. Today, however, I'm hearing his vocals for the first time. Here he's performing Pride and Joy with Double Trouble LIVE at Montreux.

When I saw him open for Dire Straits in 85 he walked on stage and plugged in his guitar. Didn't say a word, but absolutely killed it for about an hour straight. Unplugged his guitar and walked off. It was one of the best performances I have ever seen.

Weird, most guitars are a single use and usually you need to leave it connected forever where you first plugged it

Texas Flood live at the El Mocambo in Toronto 1983. It's killer. In fact, the whole live performance is one of the best blues/rock live performances ever recorded. Stevie was on fire and channeling whatever you want to call it. It was an amazing live tour de force from a virtuoso in his prime and nailing it.

SRV was so connected to both his instruments that I don't think he makes conscious decisions, it just flows out of him. That's what makes him so good, he just emotes, and the audience feels it.

Really enjoyed your appreciation for SRV! Living in Austin i was fortunate to see him live several times back in the day. I worked in the concert business for 23 years, and was fortunate to meet him backstage at Prince's Purple Rain tour show in Austin in 1985. He was very gracious. SRV fans would definitely recommend you checking his performances of "Voodoo Child" and " Tightrope" from the Austin City Limits show in 1989, and "Texas Flood" live from El Mocambo. Again, enjoyed your reaction!!

Hi! OMG I can’t begin to explain how happy it makes me to watch your reaction to my pal, Stevie. I don’t know if you’re aware, but he was self taught ( with an assist from his big brother, Jimmie Vaughan) and could not read music at all. He flunked Music Theory… everything was from listening, watching, and practice. For a time he thought one guitar was playing both lead and rhythm, so that’s how he taught himself to play. It took him a while to confident in his singing voice and worked really hard on it. I can’t help but believe that he is up in Heaven watching every reaction to his work and being so thrilled to hear vocalists making such positive and in depth remarks about his vocals. Stevie was such a kind, gentle man who was as humble as he was talented. I’m so excited to watch you fall in love him! If you thought this vocal was something special, check out this deep Blues tune with Stevie Ray and a guest performance by his friend and fellow Texas Bluesman, Johnny Copeland. So good. Thank you for your kind words about Stevie❤Donna G kzfaq.info/get/bejne/d62Aq5CW0Ne-daM.html

He changed my life as a guitar player. I was an 80’s shredder guy. A co-worker was playing his tapes and I was blown away at the purity of his blues. I found out about the blues and the building blocks of rock and roll through Stevie Ray Vaughan. Thank you Stevie.
@Benevolar
@Benevolar 6 ай бұрын
80's shredder was neoclassical minor chord arpeggios. You'd be surprised how you can incorportate such arpegios skipping notes, with some tasteful linear scales for a few notes, to create some wonderful emotional movement. So long live crazy (super hard) note skipping arpeggios! Think how you can combine Tony Macalpine with SRV!!!! OMG!!!

Not forgetting the integral talents of Tommy and Chris, and later Reese. As a young guitar player in the 1980s how do you put into words how one man changed your whole life???? I can't. Thank you. What you're getting during that guitar solo is the fact that Stevie was able to speak thru the instrument and, when he did, he had so much to say... and he did it in a way that no one, before him or since, had ever done. Listen to the instrumental, "Riviera Paradise" and you'll hear/see what I mean.

I feel privileged to live in an era that allows me to watch performances of this man and his amazing band via KZfaq, since I sadly never heard of them until Stevie Ray tragically died in 1990. Luckily my local music store had all his albums on cd, which I then bought. And I've been a fan ever since. You picked a wonderful video to be able to highlight his vocals, and the full story behind this particular night is very cool. He and the band were the very first unsigned act to play at the montreuax festival in Europe, and all of the acts prior to them (according to the drummer Chris Layton) were acoustic bands and played at lower volumes. The band came out (with Stevie smoking a cigarette) and proceeded to blast the audience with their music. This was the second song of the set (the first with vocals) and at the end of their roughly 45 minute set, they were actually booed off the stage. However, from this performance, David Bowie asked Stevie to record on his song Let’s Dance and musician Jackson Browne offered the band free time at his personal studio. Over about 2 days, the band recorded what would go on to be the landmark Texas Flood album and the rest is history.

The best performance I've ever seen. I've seen Eric Clapton, Joe Bonamassa, Eddie Van Halen, Derek Trucks, Steve Lukather, Tommy Emmanuel, and many other guitar greats performing live. They were all jaw-droppingly fantastic. But none of them touched that performance by SRV.

Loved your reaction video on the artist Stevie Ray Vaughan. He was truly at the apex of blues musicians & your focus on his vocals makes this video unique from other reaction videos on THE GOAT. WELL DONE !!!!

The GOAT. I was a small kid in Texas in the 90s and my father is a guitar player, a good one at that. Needless to say he was played daily in our house. Despite him dying in 1990 people in Texas spoke of him as if he was still alive. I honestly didn't know he was dead until I was a teenager.

You need to see Stevie do his song Texas Flood, Live At El Mocambo 1983. It is the Blues Classic of all time.

Glad you mentioned his cool and aura. I had the honor of seeing him live and from the moment he strapped on his guitar, you could feel that is where he was meant to be. On stage, making his guitar roar and wail and cry. There are some musicians who are truly one with their instrument and take it to a much higher level. SRV is a perfect example. His guitar was the extension of his soul. He didn't play it. He felt it, lived it. I think the term legendary is overused...but if the boot fits, baby...SRV deserves it.

Stevie played VERY loud! The fact that he could always get his vocals out amazed me. Music fans lost a treasure when he died. Stop thinking about learning guitar and go get one. Now! I waited until I was 58. Thanks to Rick Beato's video on you're never too old to start playing guitar I bought an Epiphone Les Paul. With the help of KZfaqrs putting up lessons I've been steadily getting better. I now own a total of 4 guitars and need to buy one more to get the kind of sounds that you can only get from a guitar with a Floyd Rose on it.

I've been bingeing srv reaction videos so I'm sure that's how the algorithm brought me this video lol but I wanted to say this is one of the best ones. I love srv and his guitar playing so it's awesome to hear a knowledgeable person shine new insights about him. He is my favorite artist by far and I'm glad others can appreciate his musicianship. I'd give up anything to see him live if he was still alive rip if you liked listening to him, check out his bootlegs. You can hear him develop throughout his early career. His '78 unreleased album is one of my favorites. You also hear Lou Ann Barton, which is a ride. I also love Harling's upstairs and San Marcos shows. This one here, Montreux '82, was his big break. Honestly, he seemed a bit nervous in this performance. He's played a ton but he was booed at this show. The Montreux festival was a jazz festival. The attendees were used to softer sounds so when srv came up with his thunderous sound, some weren't big fans. El Mocambo, which I bought the performance video for, was in 1983. He ended up playing on David Bowie's album as well. Which funny enough, David discovered him at this show (Montreux '82)!

I was fortunate to meet Stevie Ray Vaughan back in 1989 on his In-Step tour. He was such a humble man and to this day, my favourite Blues musician. Thank you for this review. ❤️
