Every time when I listen to that song I've got tears in my eyes. I am sorry Derek that you do not understand Polish but the lyrics are timeless and still ... actual. Czesław Niemen is one of the greatest ICONS of Polish Music. Please, believe me, if not the Iron Curtain, the charts would've looked totally different worldwide. I am pretty sure that Czesław Niemen would be many many many times on the top of them. Thank you for your reaction.

Určite teba vedieť viac, kto bol Niemen,! To, bol spevák, ktorý otváral oči, dušu mladým ľuďom. Spieval po svojom (ako dnes Dimash), no nemal štúdium, a podporu rodiny- veď boli 70- roky v socializme. Dodnes ho mám rada (50 rokov) ako skladateľa, hudobníka- varhany, a speváka. Česť jeho pamiatke.

From what my father told me, the first recording of this song was at a live music festival, and the mic was constantly peaking there because literally no one expected him to sing like that (the audio engineers included) At that time, he was just a random dude that barely anyone knew, so when he just bolted with such a powerful and amazing voice, everyone was stunned, to the point that the audio team didn't even react for the full performance to change the settings.

Czeslav Niemen is the author of the lyrics, the composer of the music and he is also the singer himself performing this song. It was presented and performed in 1967 at the Music Festival in Sopot / Poland. In 1962 the Cuban Crisis showed for the first time that humanity reached the level of destroying a whole world, with one weapon (nuclear). Czeslaw Niemen died in 2004 in Warsaw for stomach cancer after fighting the disease for decades. Here is the link u can watch him singing the song at the festival in 1967 (he wears stylised as old traditional Polish peasant clothes as a symbolic act). Dziwny jest ten świat ("Strange is this World") is Czesław Niemen's first solo album, released in 1967. At 20 December 1968, as first album in Poland, "Dziwny jest ten świat" was awarded with Golden record (160 000 copies sold).

Maybe we seem cold to Westerners. sad. closed. backward and, unfortunately, in your imagination we are only poor, drunks, thieves and racists. But to get to know who we really are, we need to get to know our culture and history through art in which we open our hearts, such as the beautiful music we call sung poetry. You should also listen to "Jaskółka uwięziona("Swallow trapped")" of Stan Borys. It't the same level as "Dziwny jest ten świat "- an emotional, strong voice, graphic and such a poetic, moving lyrics, immortality...You'll be impressed...

You probably translated it, found the text, However, you must remember one thing if you are interested in music, it was our greatest voice of POLAND, there will never be another like him, his voice and song lyrics were the greatest and touched our hearts. No one could compare with him, even at that time, no Russian or anyone from any other country, even to this day, none of the modern singers has or will have such a voice, pure and wonderful, if you really know how to sing and not scream like some singers do nowadays.

In answering your question - yes, he played multiple instruments. He was also a composer, producer, poet as well as a talented painter and sculptor. Dabbled with carpentry at home. Great personality and a genius. I not only had been to many of his concerts in Poland but was lucky enough to meet him in person backstage on a few occasions and shook his hand. Exceptional person indeed. He was very humble. Glory to Czeslaw Niemen! RIP.

Yes, he played the piano, and organ and guitar, composed all his songs, wrote lyrics and sang in 7 languages in different styles. He even designed covers of his albums. He passed away 20 years ago. Adding my translation (sadly not poetic enough): Strange is this world, still full of so much evil. And strange is that for so many years one human despises another. Strange is this world the world of human affairs; Sometimes just shameful to admit. Still how often is that somebody with a bad word kills as if with a knife. But there are more good people and I strongly believe that this world will never die thanks to them. No! No! No! It's about time, the high time, to destroy hatred in ourselves. This song immediately makes me think of Zegarmistrz światła (Watchmaker of light) in the classic but not in the "we're all drunkingly singing after a country wedding" way category lol It's probably because of the philosophical tone. I'd recommend it (but not the official English translation which I personally find abysmal.)

This song is really a testimony of freedom because of the iron curtain times unfortunately he did the song to show people that there are good people in the world that will make things happen and evil will not prevail gave people hope and basically was like a diss to Soviet Union 😂

Niemen was born in Belarus, not far from Ukraine. He fled Soviet Union at 19. Imagine being an immigrant in 1960s poland. That Niemen.
