Yes Kate is truly gorgeous, a natural beauty -- and she is also a beautiful person. A fearless performer, but shy and down to earth in person. I have watched, listened to, and read every interview, article, and fan story about her that I could get my hands on since I became a fan after seeing her on Saturday Night Live in 1978. It is a general consensus from critics, fans, interviewers, journalists, fellow musicians, and everyone who has worked with her or had an encounter with her that Kate is one of the most humble, sweet, gracious, kind, witty, polite, caring, classy, and lovely human beings alive.

This was Kate's first release and went to no.1 in the UK and stayed there for 4 weeks. I remember being at school and everyone trying to mimic her voice...and failing. Tomorrow, 30th July, is the birthday of Kate Bush and Emily Bronte (author of Wuthering Heights). I am American like you, but growing I happened to like a lot of Uk bands, I literally used to think that when people sing we all somehow sing with an American accent, until I fear an interview with Kate Bush and she was taking about how she doesn’t lose her accent when she sings. I had no idea that many UK bands purposely sing with an American accent to court the American market. I was blown away. Kate is so real that she wouldn’t change who she was just for commercial purposes. I respect her so much. Would love to see you review the Sensual World song.

I remember crushing on Kate as a kid. Not everyone was into Kate but I did she is rather alternative but she is very talented musically both playing piano and in writing of music and vocally including her ability to express her emotions in her singing and visually with her dancing skills. Thanks to Kate I continued down that alternative road and found many other bands the latest being Nightwish. Kate will always be the first female singer who truly touched both my heart and soul.

The first song I heard of hers, and I was spellbound. Her sound was haunting, I had no idea who Kate Bush was... but this song really got under my skin. I adore her, I think she is a genius and favorite artist of all time. From her storytelling and lyrics, to the musicality and layers -- I watch her live performances and I am in awe. Kate's first album, The Kick Inside, was ready to be recorded when one night, under a full moon, she decided to write a song about a book she just read called Wuthering heights.

I think you're seeing how a whole generation of young men fell in love with Kate Bush when this came out. Also Wuthering heights was on the curriculum the year previous. So we all knew the novel. The pivotal gothic bit is Cathy appearing as a ghost in the window.

I think a good way to appreciate the song is through its inspiration. It was written from the perspective of the ghost of Cathy in "Wuthering Heights". When KB was very young, I think about 10, she caught just a few minutes of the quite frightening ghostly scene of an early adaption for tv and it stuck in her mind. "Wuthering Heights" is a favourite of the UK and gets a re-adaption every 10 or so years, just before she wrote this a newer tv version was broadcast, perhaps this new version or catching again the earlier one re-triggered the memory and spawned this great song. You can see what is maybe the original black & white tv clip of this if you search for "Wuthering Heights window scene comparisons" on youtube, it's only a 1 min 45s or so but the spectral, other-worldly look of the pale white ghostly blur of the early version really does 'explain' the setting for this clever dance view.

She took some dance lessons with Lindsay Kemp, the pantomime and choreographer of David Bowie (Ziggy Stardust) in the 70s, because she liked his wordless expressions. The first song on the first album ("Moving" from "The Kick Inside") was written for him, about moving on a stage. He was also guest star in her 1994 short film "The Line, The Cross & The Curve". For her 1979 "Tour Of Life", she took dance lessons as well, there was a female and a male teacher, just forgot their names, sorry...

Thank you for another great reaction, I remember seeing this version of the video on the BBC and initially thinking what the hell is this?! But then the song and Kate's performance just grew on me and I was hooked. As others have mentioned it's inspired by Emily Bronte novel of the same name, a while prior to writing the song Kate had seen the tail end of a 1967 BBC adaptation of the novel when the ghost of Cathy who was haunting Heathcliff was outside his window wanting to come in, this stuck with Kate and led directly to the song, which she wrote at night under the light of a full moon on the 5th of March 1977. In order to relate to Catherine's character Kate read a few pages from the book, but not the whole book, the strange thing is that Kate wrote lines in the song that she only noticed that also appeared in the book when she read through it in full after writing the lyrics. Other interesting facts were that she shares the same birthday as Emily Bronte (30th of July - it will be Kate's birthday on Saturday) and when she was younger she was called Cathy, when Kate sings she does effectively become the character in the song, so when she sung Wuthering Heights she was Cathy. For this song Kate deliberately pushed her voice to high register since Cathy is a ghost. Regarding this music video Kate wanted the choreography to look interesting to reflect the persona of Cathy, as for the style of dancing Kate was influenced by the training she had received by Lindsay Kemp. Now EMI wanted to release a completely different song as Kate's debut single "James And The Cold Gun" but Kate disagree she wanted "Wuthering Heights" to be the debut single because she felt that she needed to make an immediate impact, in the end EMI executives only agreed because they thought that song would be a flop and its failure would teach Kate a lesson. The original release date was intended to be November 1977, but that date was missed because Kate rejected the original cover of the single since she felt that the photograph used concentrated too much on her body. Now this was very fortunate because the Paul McCartney song "Mull of Kintyre" released in November 1977 became an absolutely huge UK hit, becoming the Christmas number 1 single. Anyway after a new cover was created which Kate agreed with "Wuthering Heights" was released on the 20th of January 1978, entered the top 40 at number 27 on the 18th of February, reaching number 1 three weeks later (staying there at number 1 for four weeks), it knocked the ABBA song "Take a Chance on Me" off the top spot. By reaching number 1 in the UK singles chart Kate became the 1st female artist to have a self written song get to number 1. Wuthering Heights was a huge worldwide hit, into the top 20 in 17 countries, at least top 10 in 15 and number 1 in six (including the UK). Wuthering Heights was so unlike anything else in the charts at the time, it made precisely the massive impact that Kate had predicted. Love ur Kate Bush journey. Please do ‘Moments of Pleasure’ (1993) or ‘Sunset’ next. Sunset is not a single but definitely a fan fave from her brillant 2005 comeback album Aerial. It would be nice if you here her more recent vocals as well. They’re a bit lower of couse, but have so much more warmth and richness to it I even prefer it over her younger vocals.

Version 2 is worth a look at too, it's the same dance, but she does it on a 'wuthering height' (basically barren, windy moorland in the North of England, where the original Bronte novel is set) This song is an imagined song from a character in the 19th Century novel, it's basically a ghost story, and she's the ghost coming back for her lover, because she's out in the cold... it's heartbreaking)

If you know the story, Kathy and Heathcliff were lovers and this is her ghost coming back for her lover who was still alive and pining for her.

Whole look and choreographic is to resemble the ghost of Catherine that come to hunt Heatcliff. In the novel that this songs is built up on Heatcliff and Catherine grow up on the the manson Wuthering Heights as kids and grow a complicated relationship. Catherine married another man for other reasons than love and dies when she gives birth to a child. After that it goes south with Heatcliff mental and later physical health and he dies too after been tormented by what he thinks is the ghost of Catherine, wanting to get into his window.

Kate wrote this song at 18. Some of her early songs, like "Man With the Child in His Eyes" were written when she was much younger. Kate also helped create the wireless head mic that we all know and love today. She wanted a mic that she could use while dancing. EMI signed Kate when she was 15 - based on demos and input from David Gilmour from Pink Floyd. They then gave her 3 years to develop artistically before she cut her debut album. This type of patronage is virtually unheard of today, and speaks to how special of a talent they felt that she was. It was a DVD compilation of 80's music videos The song was "Cloudbusting" (1985) off her "Hounds of Love" album (same one that has "Running up that Hill (A Deal with God" on it). From then on became one of my favorite artists. Kate is definitely in a league of her own who inspired many artists who came after her (Tori Amos, Bjork, Lorde to name a few). Kate is every bit of a theatrical/visual performer/storyteller as she is a musical genius/writer/artist and her extensive/legendary discography proves it. Man, in the late 70's early 80's Kate Bush was legit one of the most beautiful woman in the industry. It was humanly impossible for a hetero guy at the time not to fall in love with her.

Unlike some people, I don't mind pauses during reaction videos - after all, I already know the songs very well, so that's not a problem. Also, what you have to say is always interesting and pertinent. And yeah, the chord sequence in this song is extraordinary. I would make a couple of observations about pausing: firstly, I would *not* pause after literally five seconds of the video! Man, give it a chance to breathe first. Secondly, it might be an idea not to do a pause too soon after the last pause, especially if the previous one has been quite a long one - it disrupts the rhythm maybe a little too much. Oh, and pausing the video purely to say how cute she is? Dude... 😳

The time signature is complicated. So are the key changes. That is 100% Kate. To my knowledge the choreography is 100% Kate. There is not much more to this video (aside from double-cameras and the effects) than Kate expressing herself, interpreting (channeling?) the spirit of Cathy (her namesake).

I have little musical talent and I'm tone deaf more or less, but there's one thing I might consider easy - perceiving changes in keys. Every key changes sound very strange and obvious to me. Yes, now imagine seeing this video at 5 years old - with the tune now heading to No.1 in the UK - both of which happened in 1978. People were pretty evenly divided over her and some ridicule did descend. But time vindicated her talent, simply because nobody else could do it. And they still can't.
