Kate Bush was writing songs at 11, and Wuthering Heights she wrote, which went to number one in Britain when she was 19. Kate Bush is incredibly talented, I am 58 now, and I see her as the one of the greatest British artists of my generation and am glad that younger generations are getting to hear her through excellent reviews such as this channel.

Wuthering Heights is the name of the house in the book of the same name. It was written by Emily Brontë. This was Kate's first release and came out in 1978. At the time, she was the youngest female artiste to reach number 1 in the charts. When she wrote the lyrics to "Wuthering Heights" she hadn't actually read the book. She's still going, writes all her own songs and very much like Prince used to, plays all the instruments herself. I've been a fan of hers since I first heard "Wuthering Heights" when it was first released when I was 8. She's an absolute musical living legend. I recommend you listening/reacting to "Experiment IV" (that's 4, not IV. It's not about hospital drips😁) and "Moments of Pleasure", with the videos. Each of her songs is a story in itself and you really have to listen to the lyrics to appreciate what she's singing about. Thankyou for this video - I love that you're listening to and appreciate Kate's work - and yes, she's a trained dancer as well. 🙂👍

And please consider that this was from 1979, the very first beginning of her career and her first single. She even evolved after that. One of the greatest performers of all time, I'm so happy for her that Stranger Things finally achieved that she not only got recognized in the US as well as the great artist she is, but also that people all around the world now pay tribute to her the way it should have been for decades. Kate Bush to me is like a female David Bowie, a complete artist who can do it all: write, sing, dance and perform on the highest level, versatile and artistic to the bone. That is how it's done, gentlemen. I love Kate Bush and so should you.

wuthering heights the book is set in Yorkshire, England and wuthering is part of the local dialect for windswept. The book is a famous love story between Catherine and Heathcliff . spoiler alert Cathy dies and come back as a ghost , haunting Heathcliff for the rest of his life. Moors are a type of British landsacpe whci is like a hilly wilderness. This will help you make sense of the lyrics. Kate Bush was the first female singer song writer to have a number one song in the UK with her own composition. She is also a trained dancer. There is now a worldwide movement called Wuthering heights days where people gather in public places dressed as Kate Bush and dance to wuthering heights. Mostly women but also the odd beardy bloke. they are common in Australia and New Zealand uk and Scandinavia but also in USA and are in solidarity against domestic violence. Try googling them! the track is from about 1977. Unique .

Great reaction! The live version is a tremendous performance. But if you get the chance, do check out the studio recording where the entire vocal was done on a single take, and the official video(s). I prefer what is known as the "white dress" version where you really can get the feel of the song and that in this song Kate is assuming the persona of the ghost of one of the characters from the book of the same name. She has come to the bedroom window of her still alive one time lover "Heathcliff" calling to him to let her in... but she has come to steal his soul away. If you are looking for another of her songs to react to, then I guess you could a lot worse than go directly to one of Kate's most iconic videos - "Babooshka" - weird (yes a little) but wonderful (absolutely)!

You guys nailed it. She studied interpretative dance at the beginning of her career, and choreographed this massive stage show herself that went on tour at the age of 18. It probably gets mentioned elsewhere in the comments, but the whole concept of the headset microphone for stage performance didn’t exist before 1978; her and her crew engineered it out of a coat hanger so she could sing while dancing. Edit: I can’t believe you asked if she writes her own lyrics. She does everything. She produces her own albums. Back in the 80’s she was dating a professional session bass player, and she had him play for the album she was working on. She wasn’t satisfied, so she re-recorded all the parts herself. She can do it all.

The studio version of this song with version 1 (white dress) video takes you even more outside the box, putting her high range affected vocal, dance and mime skills to full effect. What you might not have picked up on, not knowing that this was based on the Emily Brontë novel, is that Kate was singing in character as a ghost come back to haunt her lover Heathcliff.

She's really amazing. She probably wrote this when she was about 16. It's based on a part of the novel "Wuthering Heights", and the song is written from the point of view of Cathy's ghost, cold on the moors, knocking at the window asking to come in - a creepy and the most powerful scene in the book for me. A lot of people find this song weird. It's been one of my favourites since it came out.

Kate Bush is an absolute LEG. Others will comment on specifics of these vocals and performance but she has some amazing songs she sings more traditionally and beautifully. If you would like to explore more of Kate’s genius I would recommend both ‘Cloudbusting’ and ‘This Woman’s Work’ music videos to give you a taste of two other styles of her singing, songwriting and visual presentation. The Cloudbusting video is like a mini movie, with a big name actor of that time costarring with Kate.

She is the ghost of Catherine haunting her lover. Above the wind that howls across the moors at Wuthering Heights, he can hear her calling to him. She is dead before the novel proper even starts, but she dominates the story - A gothic tale written by a young woman scarcely much older than Kate Bush herself.

Never been so happy to see you guys react to a classic ancient tune. :) KB is fkin awesome, really glad you picked a live one because she has so much raw talent and there were no effects then, you hear every wobble and breath. Everything she does, notes and movements are all from her. Takes her years and years to write her music to get it exactly as she wants it to be. She wrote some dark dark shit. Try Breathing, the official video. It's dark as fuck when you get the subject matter. Timeless music. She smoked a lot, famously a lot of weed too. She cannot get those notes now, deep voice. Saw her live a few years back and it's a lovely rich deeper voice.

Some background on Wuthering Heights, which I hope that you will find interesting. A while before Wuthering Heights was written, a younger Kate managed to catch the tail end of a BBC adaptation of the Emily Bronte novel Wuthering Heights when the ghostly Cathy was outside a window of Heathcliff's house wanting to be let in. Kate shares the same Birthday as Emily Bronte and when she was young she was referred to as cathy. In order to get a feel for Cathy Kate read part of the book, interestingly when she did get round to reading all of it after finishing writing the song, Kate noticed certain phrases from parts that she hadn't initially read had ended up in the Lyrics anyway. Kate said that when she sung this song, she was Cathy, she was channelling the character. Kate's vocal performance is a single take with no edits. Kate had to fight her record company to get Wuthering Heights to be her debut single, EMI had chosen a completely different track "James and the Cold Gun" from her "The Kick Inside" album, in the end EMI released Wuthering Heights because they thought that it would fail and teach Kate a lesson, instead it became a worldwide smash hit. Hitting number 1 in Australia, Ireland, Italy, New Zealand, Portugal and the UK. It was at least a top 10 (or better) in nine other countries. A single chart performance that would only be surpassed in 2022 by "Running Up That Hill".. A common feature of Kate Bush songs is the use of unusual key changes and on occasion timing changes as well and Wuthering Heights is no different in that respect, Kate composes songs on the basis of what sounds good to her, such an approach ignoring musical convention and theory shouldn't work but it does! Between, the time Kate was signed by EMI when 16 and when starting work on "The Kick Inside" (which is a remarkable piece of work as a debut album), Kate took dance lessons including some from Lindsay Kemp who trained David Bowie. Oops, I should have added that Wuthering Heights was Kate's debut single and when it reached number 1 in the UK chart, Kate became the first female artist to have a self-written song reach the number 1 spot.

Wuthering is old Yorkshire dialect. Wuthering heights by Emily Bronte is a gothic novel from 1847 named after a house in the book up on the moors. The main protagonists of the book Heathcliffe and Kathy are in love but she spurns him for a richer suitor with more status. Heathcliffes obsession with Kathy grows even after she dies. One night Heathcliffe is beaconed on to the moors by Kathy’s ghost wrapping at the window. Kate bush is singing as Kathy’s ghost.

This was the closing number for her first concerts back in the late 70s, that's why her dance movements end up with her waving. I was at one of those concerts and remember seeing this tiny person leaping up and down waving like crazy at the audience. Her next concert tour was not for another 35 years and I was there again. This time the entire audience sang along to the chant at the end of the final encore track, Cloudbusting.

In answer to your question, I don't really think Kate is ballet trained - of course, I may well be wrong. But what I can tell you about her is that she had written her first ever album by the age of 14. And she has had some tutoring from a movement coach. Also her brother, was a friend of a guy who knew David Gilmour (Pink Floyd). Gilmour actually helped to get her started and has played guitar for her in the past.

The people who pulled the purse strings were insisting she make "Hammer Horror' the lead single to her initial release. She was in her teens still, and she insisted that Wuthering Heights be the standard bearer. Kate Bush became the first woman to have a #1 in Britain, and certainly the youngest.

@Trash Talkers later work, and not suggesting a "react" but give "The Sensual World" a go. Carries on with the Celtic feel from "Jig of Life" and slaps.

"What is Wuthering Heights?" OMG, I feel so old. Kids are not taught great literature in school anymore. Sigh.... Emily Brontë, who wrote Wuthering Heights, a classic, was British and that's why they use words like "moors". A moor is open, wild, grassy land, like what we'd call a swampy field but in England they are cold and dreary oftentimes. This song is about Catherine, who died, and came back as a ghost to Heathcliff, looking in his window and calling out to him "Heathcliff, it's me, I'm Cathy, I've come home now". That's why she has that flowing, ghostly look. And yes, she writes her own lyrics.

Have to say the only version of this song I'd previously heard was by Pat Benatar. Would check that one out, and just her music in general, she's badass.
