Rick Danko playing the violin while singing "That old time religion", is pure gold, he was stoned or hammered, but he still had the Danko raspy voice.

The Band was a Canadian band with drummer Levon Helm who was American. This video is taken from a documentary called The Last Waltz made by film maker Martin Scorsese. It was a concert for the final performance of The Band. They invited the Staples Family Gospel singers to join them to sing the song. The Last Waltz featured performers like Neil Young, Van Morrison, Joni Mitchell, Eric Clapton etc.R.I.P. Levon Helm, Rick Danko, Richard Manuel, Mavis and Pops Staples.

Listen to more of The Band, Robbie Robertson (the guy playing the double neck guitar) wrote the song, and most of the songs from The Band. They had 3 great singers Levon (also on drums) Richard (playing piano as well) and Rick Danko, (who played bass guitar and violin), they were unique that way. They were not a fusion band, The Staples Singer were a gospel group, that Robertson admired thus invited them to sing on The Weight. They started in Toronto with Ronnie Hawkins and the Hawk, who were a rockabilly band. Then they became the back up band for Boy Dylan, and then the went out on their own as The Band.

I use to like ZZ top, in the eighties, but got somewhat tired of them. I have liked The Band since 1969, and I like them more and more. So much about them to explore. I agree with CCR vibes. However, The Band is unique, hard to compare them. I love CCR as well. They were more of a commercial success, but I think The Band might have been more critical reclaimed. Frankly, I hate to compare music, nature, etc. Who is to say The Band is better than The Doors or vice versa, or Beethoven is better than Mozart. Who can say that mountains are more beautiful than rolling hills or the ocean, impossible to compare. Just enjoy.
