Gorillaz is a British virtual cartoon band that has four fictional animated members, 2D, Noodle, Murdoc Niccals and Russel Hobbs. The orchestra is formed by singer and songwriter Damon Albarn and artist Jamie Hewlett. Following Gorillaz is as much following the 4 animated members. They are a story in themselves. It's not just the musical experience here - although it is a pleasure in itself They hold concerts. I have been to 2 here in Denmark. One in the Royal Arena and a few years ago where they performed at the Roskilde Festival

Simply, Damon Albarn is giant of creativity. From Blur, to Gorillaz, to The Good, the Bad and the Queen, to his solo work and collaborations to his opera of Journey to the West. He is a hard working genius.

All the characters in the submarines are the artists featuring on the album Plastic Beach. I,e. Dela sole, snoop dog, lou reed and more. Damon Albarn who is the creator of Gorillaz (mainly know as front man in Blur. Song 2 most famous song in US) also has various other projects. For me Ren is the new Damon Albarn!

This track is so chill, smart and creative. It’s about feeling deflated and a little defeated by the progress of your life and landing on ‘Plastic Beach’ a no-man’s land of plastic thrown into the sea which is a place in which you can contemplate being lost and seeking to do and be better, and reach a high subconscious place in the mind. It was a collaborative project, with the people in the submarine being those who were the collaborators on the album the track is from. Btw Gorillaz are the most amazing visually animated band lead by Damon Albarn (from the britpop 90s band Blur) and Jamie Hewlett under his graphic design company Zombie Flesh Eaters (British comic book creator whose most famous work is probably ‘Tank Girl’ which he co-created with Alan Martin). Gorillaz are a collaborative project consisting of four main animated characters, inviting in other artists to perform with Albarn on the tracks. The band puts out tracks featuring an array of sounds and musical styles from electronica, trip hop, world music, hip hop, rap, reggae, punk, and Afro/alternative/synth pop. They concentrate on spreading an environmentalist message and journeys through the mind.

Damon A|barn was (and is again) the frontman of Blur, kind of the archenemy of Oasis at the heights of Brit Pop in the 90s. Gorillaz is a set of creative projects with a whole range of amazing artists as collaborators, under the umbrella of the animated band. Some members, like co-founder Albarn, are permanent. I love the creativity and flexibility that the concept provides. And the music is usually awesome. There is a video where the characters make it into our world, in Humility, with Jack Black.

This video documents the band escaping to a manmade island, 'Plastic Beach' (also the album name) with several other groups and people they planned to collab with on the album. Long story short, Gorillaz has a long lore thing going on that forms the story of the band's whirlwind rise to fame and then subsequent fall from grace... and somewhat return to fame? They consistently have a theme for each album and phase of the band. Usually also tied to something supernatural in their lives with music videos tending to act as snapshots of what's going on. 2D has the blue hair and his eyes were damaged by Murdoc. Murdoc is a selfish jerk who is also unscrupulous, provided it's on his own terms. Noodle is the asian girl who is a badass. and Russel is their drummer from NYC. Gorillaz was their premier album, about their start in the small Kong Studios, a former mad science lab in a graveyard. Demon Dayz had the theme of 'Reject False Idols', about their sudden rise to fame and being claimed by capitalism and loss of innocence. It ends with the death of Noodle as they try to escape this life. Plastic Beach, which Melancholy Hill is based on, is them escaping from the capitalistic world to produce music on their own terms, but plagued by the mysterious shadow being (who it turns out is the 5th Horseman of the Apocalypse) chasing down Murdoc for his soul. The Fall takes place in America as they pick up their lives after Plastic Beach. Humanz isn't much of anything besides a few good songs and doesn't fit into their lore much. The Now Now was the band living without Murdoc, leaving their bassist replaced for this album. Song Machine was all about them moving back to London and experiencing a new set of supernatural occurances. Cracker Island, the current album, is focused on a cult-like atmosphere that Murdoc's created. All of them have quite a few great songs. Suggestions of mine, purely for the music videos: Clint Eastwood Rock the House Feel Good Inc El Manana (Sequel to Feel Good Inc) Dirty Harry Happy Landfill Rhinestone Eyes Stylo (prequel to this video) Saturnz Barz The Valley of the Pagans The Lost Chord Pac-Man Cracker Island

You are right Snoop Dogg is in one of the subs. The other subs are crowded by outher guest artists who appear on the Plastic Beach album. Such as Lou Reed, DeLa Soul, Paul Simon on, 2 Many Djs and Mick Jones. To understand the Gorillaz you just need to take a deep dive into their music and videos

My personal interpretation for Melancholy hill is that the song itself is about unrequited love. Someone not going anywhere and reminiscing about a partner they lost, just wanting them back. The plastic tree on melancholy hill being a metaphor settling for a fake relationship, something that exists only in function and is otherwise sad because of how unrealistic it is. How dream-like the days were when they were together and missing that. Where they were unable to provide for their partner sufficiently, but they had each other. Visually it's both a continuation to the Gorillaz 'narrative' and also meta commentary on the music industry. Feeling blue [under the ocean] whilst surrounded by other creators all headed in the same direction. The manatee being a reference to the fat cats at the top, being massaged and coddled by the industry at the expense of the individual artists. Obfuscating what lies ahead of them in the industry. They fight back, attacking the industry, but the industry remains unchanged and steals away the coddled fat cats. It's only when the corporations and fat cats are out of the way that they can really see their what lies ahead of them at the end of the road. In this case it's a plastic island where everything is fake and manufactured. Which to a creative person might as well be a death sentence, which is why there is a bell toll at the end. It's the end of the road and end of their career as they produce lucrative, but mediocre and creatively unfulfilling work.

Youve probably gotten the answer already, but the albums are stories. The music videos make sense if you get an idea of the world these characters are in. Still sort of abstract but this album (Plastic Beach) has a lot to do with consumerism and clean earth messages. And Snoop Dogg is on the album, but earlier. The collaborations on Gorillaz songs are always great, i recommend if possible watch the videos in order, if not, please do so in your own time, just to get an understanding of what they do. For years there was talks about a TV show with these characters because of how deep the storylines go.

Not surprised by the confusion. It's like opening a novel and reading a random paragraph from the middle of the book, starting here. You might enjoy the style and artistry, but without the context it's bound to be difficult to get what's going on. A little explanation on why that might be could be helpful. Keeping with the analogy, if you consider the beginning of the band's concept in 1997 until now as a book, there have been 7 "chapters", called Phases. Each album release represents a new Phase in Gorillaz' story(except for The Fall, which was kind of a bonus album release recorded while Gorillaz were on tour with Plastic Beach. Plastic Beach and The Fall are both considered Phase 3). Point being, this whole project, Gorillaz, is essentially a story progression of the band itself. This song here, On Melancholy Hill, is from the 3rd Phase, represented by the Plastic Beach album. So yeah, confusion about the video seen it's own, the 10th track on the 3rd album, would be expected. It's a huge convoluted story, man. Anyway, enjoyed your reaction. I'm not sure how deep into this story you'd want to go, but if you want a quick breakdown just to get the idea of it, just do a youtube search on 'Gorillaz Phases explained'. There are a few youtubers who've done their best trying to relate the entire thing. Good luck, and Enjoy!

Gorillaz albums are always very feature-heavy, this music video had plenty of the guests appearing, like Snoop, De La Soul, Lou Reed, the guitarist and bassist from The Clash, and others, who all have tracks on this album, Plastic Beach.
