The Guess Who are a Canadian band - worth taking a deep dive. Randy Bachman was their lead guitar player and co songwiter along with Burton Cummings. Randy went on to start BTO (Bachman Turner Overdrive)

All great artists. Had never heard the Jerry Harrison tune, it was good. About time we got into some INXS (in excess). That KICK album is one of the best from the 80's. Thank You, Scott. Good discussion Nick.

Thanks Nick for the reaction some loaded content here. Nice comments it’s a tough topic, and I think it’s safe to say that with Gun ownership comes responsibility. I’m not a gun owner myself and some of these songs made an impression on me when I was young, I see these songs as about being more aware of how quick a gun can change everything. I thought you would like the Jerry Harrison track the lyrics are fun to decipher. The INXS, band is pronounced in excess, I have always interpreted the song Guns in The Sky as being about governments and the dangers of weaponizing space. That Lynyrd Skynyrd Guitar tone is so great. I loved seeing your face crinkle up To that great sound. As I recall the band was named after their shop teacher. Some of the original lineup for Skynyrd died in a tragic plane crash on October 20 1977. I was a senior in high school and was pretty shook up for a while. Bonnie is always a welcome addition. Sorry it never occurred to me that the later Doobie Brothers were not still on Warner Brothers. Nice catch thanks for your thoughts and reactions. Bravo. 👏

Great choices, Scott! That was a deep cut by Guess Who, never heard it before. And you know I love all things related to Talking Heads! I think the most powerful song with this theme is The Gun by Lou Reed. Great job, Nick!

Great piece! I travelled all through Europe in the fall of 1988 listening to this on my Walkman. Brings back fantastic images in my head I forgot about. I remember I was walking down the street in Nice listening to it with my headphones on and a guy came up to me and asked what I was listening to as I was really getting into it. I took off my head phones and let him listen and he loved it. I haven't heard it for decades. It was great to hear it again. The whole disc is very good.

Lynryd Skynryd is from Jacksonville, Florida. Named as a spoof on the gym teacher at Robert E. Lee high school, Leonard Skinner, who ragged on them about their long hair. Plane crash killed Ronnie, Steve and Cassie along with others. All original member have since passed away. 😢 Such a great band. Go down that rabbit hole ASAP!

Great marathon Scott! When I saw the theme, and then saw Jerry Harrison my heart soared. I love 'Man With A Gun'. The Casual Gods album confirms that Talking Heads were always more than just David Byrne and a great rhythm section. And then you chose INXS! The first concert I took my daughter to (age 10) was INXS in Johannesburg 1997, a few months before Michael Hutchence died. What a great band, there are many great songs available to make up a few INXS marathons. It was great to hear both The Guess Who and Lynyrd Skynyrd again after quite a while and you can always include Bonnie as far as I'm concerned Nick. Wonderful music, thanks to you both.

Nick it’s pronounced INXS “In excess” but I digress. I’m here for Skynyrd. How’s it going? Been a while. Honorable mention for “guns” from LS. “Gimme back my bullets” . Great tune! Saturday Night Specials are cheap ass thug guns common among criminals back in the day. The spoof is on that in the lyrics.

Check out the 1981 Jerry Harrison album The Red And The Black for some good Adrian Belew guitar. They had played together when Belew recorded and toured with Talking Heads, and just toured together recently revisiting some of that material. The Guess Who song here was from after guitarist Randy Bachman had left the group in 1970. For a Guess Who song with jazz influence, try "Undun" from 1969. The jazzy chords reflect the times when guitarist Randy Bachman used to skip highschool classes in Winnipeg to take lessons from jazz guitarist Lenny Breau (who was on a Feb./23 marathon).

The Guess Who! My hometown boys from Winnipeg, Canada 🇨🇦 The first line American hunter coming north. We get a lot of Americans coming up to Canada to hunt and fish. Sometimes they are respectful and sometimes they are not. That also applies to Canadian hunters as well. The Guess Who' most well known song is American Woman. They would be a good band to check out. Share the land Undun Albert Flasher Sour Suite Also, Randy Bachman who was in the Guess Who left the band and started BTO (Bachman Turner Overdrive) Two excellent bands to check out Cheers

And . . . _In 1969, Van Zant (the vocalist) sought a new name after growing tired of taunts from audiences that the band had "one percent talent". At Burns' suggestion, the group settled on Leonard Skinnerd, which was in part a reference to a character named "Leonard Skinner" in Allan Sherman's novelty song "Hello Muddah, Hello Fadduh" and in part a mocking tribute to P.E. teacher Leonard Skinner at Robert E. Lee High School. Skinner was notorious for strictly enforcing the school's policy against boys having long hair. Rossington dropped out of school, tired of being hassled about his hair. The more distinctive spelling "Lynyrd Skynyrd" was adopted at least as early as 1970._ That's pretty funny, I KNOW that song "Hello Muddah, Hello Faddua" from the 70's/80's Radio show "Dr. Demento" that featured novelty/comedy songs and comedians. You should listen to it, its pretty funny (Allan Sherman had a lot of funny songs). The "Saturday Night Special" was a 38.cal Revolver (Where the Southern Rock band "38 Special" gets their name). Cops used to kid around saying the caliber was so small "The bullets would bounce off windshields". That's why "Dirty Harry" jokes about having a more powerful .44 Magnum in the 1st film. It was a cheap gun that criminals used to buy quickly from the 1950's to early 70's (Pawn Shops carried lots of cheap guns back in the day).

Hey Scott, for a Sequel; "Toto" - Gift with a Golden Gun, "Adrian Belew" (w/ David Bowie) - Gunman, "UK" - Danger Money, "Deep Purple" - Under the Gun (which I've added to a playlist called "!!!WAR!!!"). I know there are more, but they evade me at the moment, BUT . . . As it goes in the theme of "Westerns", you may enjoy this: kzfaq.info/sun/PL2DU3TBNutEcX5R0FtiSFaOvwwbyfaVfv - Love the Themed Marathon, I only knew the "Lynyrd Skynyrd" track (which is an AOR/FM Radio staple. Hey Nick, Speaking of PAIN . . . Had a stupid Bike Accident in front of my local Super Market. Over a speed bump and I think my left hand was off the handle, all the sudden I hit the ground HARD and screwed-up both my "wrists" (and are just healing) and my right Thigh was bruised where my "keys" were in my pocket, but I hit the tarmac so dang hard, the back wheel came off! 2 days before Christmas too 🎄☃ YAYYY!!!! FUN! 😵🤕 So I hope you guys are healing and getting better.
