It wasn't just the Rolling Stones, it was also Deep Purple that asked him to replace Ritchie Blackmore after he left and formed Rainbow. No band was good enough for him, Rory was an unleashed hurricane that couldn't be contained in a regular type of a band. He was his own act, and what an act! The best ever to pick-up a guitar and melt your face with his playing and presence. A 100% certified legend!

Back in 1973, in Southern California, my high school buddies and I bought tickets to see Deep Purple at the old San Bernardino Swing Auditorium. We saw the opening act of some dude from Ireland named Rory Gallagher. We were all so blown away and he came back for 2 more encores. Rory inadvertently stole the show. (No disrespect for DP, but it was just fact) we all went home and bought a bunch of Rory Gallagher albums and became Rory Heads.

You just witnessed Rock's greatest guitar player - - -and great singer! Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Slash and others were all huge Rory fans !! Popular legend has it that one time Hendrix was asked: 'What does it feel like to be the world's greatest guitar player..?' Jimi replied: 'I don't know, you should go ask Rory Gallagher'.

Rory passed away almost 24 years ago now. If he knew how much he was still revered now by his fans and those who'd never heard of him during his lifetime, I think he would be humbled as he was a very humble man - you should watch the whole of the Rock Goes to College gig or the Bullforg Blues encore on the Old Grey Whistle Test (or the whole show) to understand how humble he was. He lived for his music and, yes, he was not commecial although he was pressured to release one single 'Philby' which was also included as a single with his Top Priority album. Lots and lots of his gigs are on KZfaq and I could recommend countless - or all - of them. I was going to suggest some but there are too many and all versions of the same song are different. OK, Laundromat live at Montreux (1975) has a nice jazzy feel to it and the Souped Up Ford encore live at Volkshaus Zurich 1980 is an out and out rocker. And sooooooooo many more.

Great Reaction. Even though Rory never released a single, he sold over 30 MILLION albums. He was a GIANT in Europe, but had a much smaller, but very dedicated following in the US. Somehow he never fit into the US "branding style" so wasn't really marketed much. Oh, and since he is from Ireland the second "g" in his name is silent - GAL - A - HER.

Anyone who has dealt with rock blues or music in general must come across Rory at some point. I suspect that it is simply a different generation that is now encountering Rory. Can’t believe people never heard of Rory Gallagher. He’s a legend. To appreciate this track you should familiarise yourself with the studio version. Even with an out of tune guitar here the guy still wipes the floor.

On creativity, Rory played each gig according to how he felt at the time, and the band had to follow. No two versions of a song the same.

Funny you mention Hendrix, when asked by a reporter at Woodstock what it felt like to be the greatest guitarist in the world, he answered "Ask Rory Gallagher" That's respect. Nice reaction. R.I.P. Rory.

Saw Rory in 73 opening up for Deep Purple when they were peaking . he blew the roof off the place and after his set he did an encore and we were standing on our chairs screaming for another encore which he did but we wanted more..Rory made it very difficult for Deep Purple that night to come on after him.

I was at that gig, at Middlesex Polytechnic in Hendon, London UK, January 1979. It was filmed for a BBC tv series called Rock Goes To College. Rory Gallagher was a guitar genius and is a total legend. It's fantastic to see this again and it's great that you like it so much too!

Thank you for taking my suggestion! And your observations about Rory playing second fiddle to Mick & Keith is spot on. Rory also didn't play to an audience, he played with his audience, pulling them into the performance in a way most performers couldn't. Rory didn't use a setlist and played whatever he felt the mood of the moment required. His band had quite a job keeping up with him. He was a fan of Dylan and a contempoary of Hendrix, influenced by many of the same blues players as Jimi. Please do check out more of his performances!

Hope you dig deeper, with 11 studio and 3 live albums plus many many live videos like this one, there's plenty to choose from. A self taught multi instrumentalist (he played electric, slide and acoustic guitar, mandolin, harmonica, and even saxophone in the early years), singer and songwriter, Rory left us a huge and diverse body of work, as well as blues and rock, his music also draws from folk, jazz, funk, and even a bit of country. Rory didn't want to release singles or music videos (the videos on YT are from televised live performances) as he saw that as more geared toward the pop scene and he had no interest in becoming a celebrity pop-star, and didn't indulge in a rock-star lifestyle. As he said "The industry doesn't know how to categorise me - I think like a folk artist, get my energy from rock, but my soul's in the blues!" He is also widely acknowledged to have been one of the nicest people you could ever meet. Actually, Rory did release a single - Same Old Story/ Born on the Wrong Side of Town- in March 1969 when he was in the band Taste. I know, because I bought it. Hi guys, I saw Rory many times and he gave everything every concert. Try and review Shadow Play live and you will see what an entertainer he really was.

I saw him in late ‘72, small stage, small college gig I was right at the front, best gig of my life (but I never got to see Pink Floyd) you could see in face how much he loved playing, went well over his allotted time. The Stones wanted to sign him to their label and Jagger wanted him to join the band. Apparently Deep Purple had him as a supporting band for their US tour he got a standing ovation- a bit awkward that. I could go on, there’s so much to tell and it’s fun finding out.

Listen to his live version of the song, Philby. He plays an electric Coral sitar that he rented from Townsend. Rory played mandolin, harmonica, and saxophone as well, and his acoustic sets were unreal. He lived to play for the people, and off stage, he was a soft spoken, gentile, kind man, who was always willing to talk with his fans.

Bob Geldof remarked in a documentary, that Rory was a priest, and his Church was the Blues..love it.

May I also recommend Hawkwind's 'Space Is Deep' from their 1973 live Space Ritual album (with Lemmy on bass). Different from Rory's music but also bloody incredible. The whole album is incredible and really needs to be heard in its entirety to experience the, er... experience. Or try Silver Machine, their 1972 single, for a concentrated version of Hawkwind.

It's a well-publicized fact that the Stones offered the post of lead-guitar to Rory. Only recently did I hear the account of why he did not join. He was not even going to go to the 'audition', but his brother/manager kind of forced or persuaded him to go. When Rory went to London, he was supposed to meet Keith Richards, but because of Richard being in a drugged-state of being non-disposed, Rory, realizing that he had a gig to play with his own band did not hang around and left to play his gig. This is the only detailed account of this I have heard. The great Roy Buchanan was later also offered the job and made up a temporary excuse at the time, but admitted years later that the real reason he turned them down was that he had been told by other musicians that they were indeed responsible for Brian Jones's death. Eric Clapton was offered the job a few times, but has stated that he felt they did not need as much guitar as he would bring. This aligns with your comment that Rory/w his guitar was a show all his own. Many believe that Mick Taylor was the best guitarist the Stones ever had, but has recently recounted the he left because of the recurring drug busts, he having to be around heavy drug use with which he had a problem himself, along with the fact that Mick Jagger promised him some songwriting credits for his input into some songs and never followed through.

Rory auditioned for the Stones but Keith was drugged and absent and probably wouldn’t have wanted Rory anyway. Ronnie Wood was an obvious and safe choice. Looks like a Stone, plays like a Stone, partys like a Stone.

Rory was too good for the Stones, he was a frontman, he wouldn't have been happy being subservient to Jagger.
