Everybody Wants Some, Romeo Delight, Take Your Whiskey Home-all off Women And Children First. If you like the bass player(Michael Anthony), he’s all over this record. And for lack of a better way to say it, the whole album just sounds HUGE. I think you’ll dig it.

The way Roth talked about it when asked why VH was so likeable to so many people, did they plan it that way? And he said hell yeah they did, they played hundreds of shows in SoCal before they ever got a record deal, playing for all kinds of audiences; high schools, bar mitzvahs, weddings, the VFW, the biker bars, the chicano bars, anywhere & and played all kinds of music covers, so they learned to have an ear for cool, fun, catchy riffs, hooks and lyrics. They wanted to entertain any crowd, they never wanted to be known as just a heavy metal band or a hard rock party band.

3:50 So about the panning; that was a choice by their producer at the time, Ted Templeman. He wanted to take advantage of stereo panning and mimic a "live" sound as much as possible, so he panned Eddie way the hell to the right and just had his slapback echo on the left. The problem though is that he didn't bring the bass up enough in the left channel to compensate, so it sounds somewhat empty on headphones. This kind of stuff drove Eddie crazy, so when Sammy Hagar came on, he settled on a more balanced mix so you could hear guitar and bass just fine in both channels.

That's a great explanation. I always thought the songs were of top quality on II, but the production hurt it a bit. Still a killer album. Light up the Sky, DOA, Bottoms Up, and Somebody get Me a Doctor absolutely rip.
@lucasberglund2620
@lucasberglund2620 3 жыл бұрын
Also something to note why most bands panned the guitar to the left side was because clapton always panned his guitar to the left.
@kdm71291
@kdm71291 3 жыл бұрын
I’m hearing more Eddie on the left....and I’m using my iPhone in-ear headphones which can only go in one way, so I know I don’t have them in backwards....perhaps this presentation is channel-flipped, IDK....but it seems to be the opposite of what you are saying.
@lucasberglund2620
@lucasberglund2620 3 жыл бұрын
@@kdm71291 it is panned on the left. all early records they panned it on left side due to clapton did it and it would sound like it did on live shows due to eddie standing on the left side of the stage. It was Ted the producer who recommended that. Eddie thought it was stupid so when Sammy joined the band he went sterio.

I'm new checking out your channel. I was listening to D.O.A with headphones and thought I'd look up a reaction. Your's was the first that came up! I love your enthusiasm. I'm 63. I started attending The Mighty Van Halen concerts in 1979. I went to 9 shows in 40 years. I attended their final tour in 2015. They looked old as did I, but they still knocked your socks off with their excitement and the pure fun they were having living their music. I miss Ed. I cried the day he passed and jammed on my guitar to old Van Halen albums the rest of the day. I really like your attention to detail. Ed's really singular rhythm playing on this song catches your ears because the double muted "rake" Ed does in on the 3,and 4 beat in the main riff. As trash as Ed makes it sound, it is fucking catchy because of that minor harmonic fast up-down. Van Halen makes your eyes smiles which shows your feeling that groove. Thanks for the open eye and ear observation. ✌️ and joy brother. GT

"Eruption" Caught our ear. "You Really Got Me" had us thinking "okay cool". 'D.O.A." came out the speakers of my brothers stereo and me and all my buddies went "This here is our shit now." Then 'Atomic Punk' made us say "Keep the old dogs, we got a monster here."

As much as Eddie was hailed the G.O.A.T. as far as guitar playing went, but I really don't think Alex gets as much credit for his hardcore beats. Seriously, the man is ALWAYS on fire with those drums. Like I've told everyone, Eddie and Alex had an agreement a long time ago: 'Alex, just keep the beats coming and I'll keep the riffs coming.'

Van Halen I and II are two badass mufukin kickass albums!! The first? You just can't touch it in the history of Rock. But, the second album was incredible too! What's great about the second album is that it had a really great single, in "Dance The Night Away". You had to hand it to this amazing Hard Rock band to pull off a sweet little radio-friendly gem like that! But, lest you think they were letting their Heavy-Cred slide, all you have to do is listen to just about every one of the other songs on the album. Great, great music!

I don't think there is a downer of a VH song. Even those that are a bit more serious still have an upbeat sound. It's a gift because I don't think every artist can straddle that line so consistently. Atomic Punk has a very cool riff, shoot they all do. Drop Dead Legs, Top Jimmy. But there is a bit of a softer side too. Im not even talking about Van Hagar. Give a listen to Secrets, Cathedral and Little Guitars. That isn't really "soft" but it has an acoustic intro and it's straight up 🔥

No, it didn't have to be recorded to one ear. How is it, that the equipment back then, was so inferior, but the music is some of the best ever made? The reason they put sounds in one ear or the other was that was the purpose of stereo. Separation of sounds. So, they used it. To great affect, in my opinion.

No, they mixed it that way on purpose, but not all bands were recorded well back then. Van Halen was recorded well, but tastes and styles were just different back then, so the mix sounds unusual to your young ears. Eddie wanted all his guitar notes to stand out -- not get lost in a mushy wall of sound. There's so much detail to his playing. Rock drums were not quite as heavily emphasized back then like they are now -- maybe with the exception on Led Zeppelin's John Bonham. Bonham's drumming was captured so well, especially on a song like When The Levee Breaks, which is why that beat has been sampled several times by rappers.
