First time trying DHIDO. Traditional Nepali food 🇳🇵

Today I tried Dhido for the first time. And as recommended by many of the comments on my last vlog about Dal Bhat I used my hands to eat it.
Dhido is considered to be part of the traditional Nepali cuisine. Before rice was common in Nepal, most people ate Dhido instead.

I remember my parents used to cook Dhido for them because we siblings used to throw tantrums after seeing it. Now I am in Germany away from home and I miss gundruk, dhido, rayoko saag 😭

I used to help my mom make dhido, holding the karai strong while she was just turning it around and stuff. I used to hate when dhido was for dinner but my mom always made sure we also had rice as well so thatbme and my brother wouldnt starve lol. Now I wanna try dhido with local kukhura ko masu and spicy achar so bad.. Hope you are having a good time in Germany. Best wishes from a fellow Nepali from US.

Ok Nepal always had Rice and Nepal also always had Millet ( Dhido) but due to lack of transportation and people less travelling to different places long time ago ( may be 100 years and before) people did not have a need to eat the staple that did not grow locally. It also became expensive to transport grains between different regions. So in a way it might have looked like Dhido was cheaper and was for poorer but Rice was for affluent people in the past. Now people have realized the potential of Dhido as millet has been categorized as a super food. Millet has evolved the same way quinoa has in Africa. Transformed from poor mans food to rich mans food. I think dhido was named poor mans food for no reason other than stupidity even in the past. They ate what grew locally and due to transportation and people movement goods that were abundant locally was cheap and goods that were imported from outside were expensive.

Rice 🍚 was so rare food in the olden era that’s so true! We had to wait until we have guests so could eat rice at home ! In the 80s , I guess even now in rural area people eat dhido! More
