There’s no such thing as “original satay” as every region in Indonesia has its own version of the skewered meat dish. Sate Madura is usually with peanut sauce, Sate Maranggi is served with sweet soy sauce, Sate Padang is with gravy, Sate Manis is eaten with no sauce, etc. And there’s no soy sauce in pempek.

"Every Street is a Market" 😂😜 love that! that's what I had missed while outside Indonesia. Sate in Indonesia is one of Barack Obama's favourite since his childhood in Indonesia. You should try the real real Rendang, Rendang Padang the best Food in the world from Sumatra :) Sate Padang originally from my Father's birth town and regency Pariaman of West Sumatra, the sauce is made of rice flour and curry spices (ginger, turmeric, and many spices that only grow in Sumatra) and the tenderloin beef satay are boiled in spices too hours to cool down before grilling that's why it's savory then served with "ketupat" rice cake wrapped in coconut leaves and dry fried shallots on top of the sauce (I still cannot stop admiring how talented the people are in villages weaving the coconut leaves becoming a cube to cook the "ketupat" rice cake with, really skillful craftsmanship, I always told them this is beyond fancy food preparation while it's just for daily consumption)

MSG is natural. Glutamates are basically the fifth taste called umami. Glutamates occur naturally in many many foods. I am a chef and have done my research .The myths about msg in North America come from a racist and xenophobic sentiment towards Chinese and other asian restaurants that were becoming popular in the 20th century. This still happens nowadays. Happy Travels

Goggled this Sate taichan is a variation of chicken satay grilled and served without peanut or ketchup seasoning unlike other satays. It is served with sambal and squeezed key lime, while the chicken meat used with this satay generally plain white in colour and only seasoned with salt, key lime, and a little chili. Wikipedia Place of origin: Indonesia Region or state: Jakarta, Nationwide

There's actually a lore to this, lol. A Japanese gentleman ordered Sate Ayam (Sate Ayam Madura) from one of the street vendors in Senayan, Central Jakarta, but ended up not liking the peanut sauce. He went back and asked for the vendor to make him another portion without the peanut sauce and asked him to just give a little bit of salt and small drips of keffir lime on it. When the Sate vendor asked the patron what kind of Sate it was, he only said 'Taichan'. The recipe later became popular amongst youngsters. Upgrades were then applied to marination and the accompanying sambal. The 'Sambal Taichan' became a thing of its own distinct from the Sambal served at Sate sites, and this also gave rise to variations of dishes (also targeting youngsters) that are not Sate but use the Taichan Sambal (then simply referred to as saus/bumbu Taichan).

Our sate/satai concept is any food that served on stick... it's called sate because it's served on stick. sate madura, the popular one, mostly people just say sate/satai... you can put fruits on stick, and it will called fruit sate, any food that served on stick will called as a sate. I know, this one would a TLDR comment, and you may not read this, but from the way you're enjoying the Sate-s in this video, I really can't help not to write it down. There are many iterations of Sate in Indonesia, and thus there actually isn't any 'Original' one. Probably what people would refer as an 'original' is the one they would find most common, especially in the capital/Jakarta. This Sate, like the one you ate in the last part of the video, actually hails from the Madura island (Sate Madura). This style of Sate uses chicken (Sate Ayam) by default, smothered in peanut sauce. Some establishments like the one in the end of the video, may offer mutton/goat meat one (Sate Kambing). If you've been eating Sate this whole time with peanut sauce, know that there is an alternative sauce composed of sweet soy sauce (kecap manis) added with diced tomatoes, shallots, and bird-eye chili cuts, which we usually just say as 'Bumbu Kecap' (sweet soy sauce seasoning). I can see in the video that you had a Sate Kambing with peanut sauce. Usually it's served with the Bumbu Kecap one. That being said, basically you can also try to order Sate Ayam but with Bumbu Kecap and experience something different. The first Sate you ate in this video, Sate Taichan, is indeed a modern recipe. People are not really sure of its origins, but some sources say that this is the brainchild of a Japanese expat who happened to order a Madura style Sate Ayam but ended up not liking the peanut sauce. So he went back to the seller and asked him to grill another portion without the sauce and add just a little bit of salt and tiny drips of keffir lime juice on top. When the seller asked what kind of Sate it was, the Japanese patron only said "Taichan". Later this became a trend of its own, with additional modifications such as use of MSG and garlic on the chicken skewers, upgraded sambals, etc. Some Taichan vendors would even offer non-satay dishes with 'Taichan sauce'. Padang-style Sate, or Sate Padang, the one you ate after the Taichan one hails from the city of Padang in West Sumatra. This is NOT a NEW style Satay, and if you go Padang city, this would be their ORIGINAL one, lol. The actual recipe is probably hundreds of years old. This Sate normally uses thin-sliced beef (and other parts of the cattle like tongue, lungs, etc) and a very different sauce which is made from a combination of chili, galangal, coriander, ginger, candlenut, anise, and garlic (Padangese folk, please correct me if I'm wrong). You can find this type of Sate in other cities as well. Having a spoon on your plate is because people would need it to scoop the sauce along with the rice cake.

Your comment was indeed long but I read it all. For the most part I was waiting for it to turn mean and call me a fool (very common on KZfaq), but you didn’t do that.. so kudos to you for that. So, some other people have mentioned the same thing - my idea of ‘satay asli’ is a bit off. That’s my mistake. I assumed peanut sauce was the original, because i’ve seen a lot, and the others never. My mistake! Anyway cheers to you for correcting me and not being a jerk 👍👍

I am triggered by so little information you have about Indonesian food. Despite so many similarities between Indonesia and Singapore and Malaysia, we have to remember that Indonesia has 17 thousand (although only around 14 thousand are 'real' islands), hence there are so many culture and food that are not known even for Indonesian Indonesian themselves. SATAY or meat skewers have soooooo many version in Indonesia. The one that you know, satay with peanut sauce, is only from ONE small island in Indonesia, Madura. It became so popular that it is even getting labelled as sate Indonesia. But there are so many more satay without peanut sauce and they are all ORIGINAL: sate padang (with sticky curry sauce) , sate ambal (with tempeh-based sauce) , sate Winong (satay with sweet soy sauce), sate lilit (fish-coconut skewers without sauce) sate maranggi, sate buntel, sate kere, etc. Sate taichan is a new version of sate and it was said to be inspired by the Japanese Yakitori version. The one you called MSG, is actually mushroom stock. That was because in Yakitori, you can also eat the chicken skewer with salt on the side. The fish cake I assume was empek empek from Palembang, and the sauce was not soy sauce. It was not even close to the taste of any soy sauce. It was vinegar or tamarind and palm sugar and garlic. Anyway, I know that you are not a food blogger, but I hope your knowledge will be expanded with your experience in Indonesia

Sate in Indonesia is one of Barack Obama's favourite since his childhood in Indonesia. You should try the real real Rendang, Rendang Padang too the best Food in the world from Sumatra :) Sate Padang originally from my Father's birth town and regency Pariaman of West Sumatra, the sauce is made of rice flour and curry spices (ginger, turmeric, and many spices that only grow in Sumatra) and the tenderloin beef satay are boiled in spices too hours to cool down before grilling that's why it's savory then served with "ketupat" rice cake wrapped in coconut leaves and dry fried shallots on top of the sauce (I still cannot stop admiring how talented the people are in villages weaving the coconut leaves becoming a cube to cook the "ketupat" rice cake with, really skillful craftsmanship, I always told them this is beyond fancy food preparation while it's just for daily consumption)

Lontong(indonesia)=nasi impit(malaysia). Martabak(indonesia)=apam balik(Malaysia). Sate in Malaysia = chicken/meat/lamb marinated with few things served with peanut sauce. Sate in Indonesia = just chicken/meat/lamb served in different styles identic to certain area.

not really Sir. Your Apam Balik is a sibling of our Martabak Manis, which some of us also call Martabak Terang Bulan, Kue (Kuih) Terang Bulan, Hok Lo Pan, Martabak Bangka, and Apam Pinang (in Kalimantan provinces). Despite the name, Martabak Manis is a completely different dish from Martabak Telur. The latter is relatively the same as your Murtabak. On the question of why Martabak Manis is called or even considered to be a 'Martabak'... well , one story suggests that in the old days it was sold together with the real Martabak/Murtabak, and thus the name stuck. Fellow Indonesians, please correct me if I'm wrong.

Apam balik and martabak manis is similar, but the consistensy, thickness, filling are different. You gotta try for yourself! Actually, the best martabak manis is usually found in Bandung, and the best shop is called “Martabak Canada”😅
