Every nasi lemak will be different. The MOST IMPORTANT ingredient is the sambal. No two sambals are the same. So keep trying it at different places until you find one that you like best. ❤

Hai guys... I forget to mention, the art of eating Malaysian food is actually to mix most of the ingredients served... Like when you taste Nasi Kerabu, you have to mix the rice with the coconut gravy and the vegetable plus the keropok and try to scoop it in one spoon (since you used fork and spoon... Because most Malaysian will eat using hands so ni problem with mixing those in one bite). Same goes when you try "Cendol" or "ABC"... You have to mix all the ingredients then only you can feel the real taste ...

Someone else already commented on what a basic nasi lemak should be. imo nasi lemak with huge additional protein sides (rendang, fried chicken etc) eaten as a main meal at all hours of the day is mainly a KL thing. In other states the common nasi lemak is the basic nasi lemak wrapped in banana leaf usually sold only for breakfast. If there's any side dish the portion is tiny because you're not meant to gorge yourself on it. For me trying nasi lemak with huge protein sides as your first nasi lemak experience complicates it a bit when you should focus on the rice and sambal. There are nasi lemak variants based on who makes it. Wanjo is Malay nasi lemak, Village Park is Chinese nasi lemak. What anyone likes is based on their palate. If you're sticking to the KL city center I wouldn't suggest going all the way to the PJ suburbs for Village Park unless you plan a whole one-day itinerary in PJ (a food haven in its own right but it's just a place where people live). Kampung Baru has all the Malay food you need, and they actually have more nasi kerabu than nasi lemak (it's basically a concentration of Kelantanese Malay food). If you do want Chinese nasi lemak in the KL city center, in Chow Kit wet market there's a Chinese nasi lemak stall called "Taste Legendary" selling nasi lemak with pork belly, just a few minutes walking from Kampung Baru. But be warned that Chinese folks don't make good rendang (and vice versa Malays aren't able to cook good Chinese food in general). I wouldn't recommend visiting the suburbs outside of KL city center unless you're a hardcore foodie vlogger with a lot of time. KL city is sufficient if you want to sample basic Malaysian food. Kampung Baru has all the Malay food, but the Chow Kit area itself is known for good nasi kandar, Chinese food (mainly bak kut teh and dry chilli pan mee which was created by Kin Kin which still operates there), Indonesian food, and Pakistani food. On Saturdays there's a street market on Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman in Masjid Jamek area selling mainly Malay food. For Indian food in Masjid Jamek go to Lebuh Ampang and Jalan Tun HS Lee, also Little India in Brickfields but make sure you explore the back streets too other than the main walking street as the hidden gems are the shops in the residential area (mainly Jalan Berhala which is a lush street with historical places of worship, and they have a night market on Thursdays). For Chinese food in KL city, I'd recommend Pudu over any other place, and you'll be surprised to see that it's a sleepy suburb just behind Bukit Bintang. Can't stress enough on how the best food is in the residential areas, but even in KL city itself there are residential suburbs and you don't need to go as far as PJ or other suburbs to eat good affordable food. Sorry for the long essay. Happy travels!

@@ChovyTravel I gotta add. Some of these places aren't easy to be in (Chow Kit and Pudu generally). As urban sprawl happened most Malaysians moved to the suburbs, and economic migrants moved in to fill the spaces (just a matter of fact, not saying it's good or bad). 90% of people who work in KL city live outside the city, and the center of entertainment and shopping is now very concentrated in the Golden Triangle with Bukit Bintang being the focal point. So the other places in KL lose their crowd. I still go because I'm used to them, but if I weren't I'd probably have found them unsafe. So while I did recommend them, I wouldn't advise going without a guide or a local friend. I'd have said bring me, but I don't live in KL anymore. 😂
@mezamereba
@mezamereba 6 күн бұрын
@@ChovyTravel Can't believe that I forgot mentioning this; I'm actually from a place that does do a different nasi lemak variant. In Alor Setar, nasi lemak is made with ghee or butter instead of coconut milk so the rice is yellow and it's served with curries instead of sambal. It's more like a hybrid of nasi lemak with nasi kandar and nowadays we just call it nasi kandar. We do have conventional coconut milk nasi lemak with sambal but it's mainly just breakfast food whereas nasi kandar is sold throughout the night. But because of the history, some restaurants still brand themselves "nasi lemak", so people from out of town often feel deceived because they're expecting conventional nasi lemak. If you do know you're getting a nasi kandar experience though, I think it's pretty solid because we use flavored rice vs white rice used for nasi kandar at other places. Also, one of the distinguishing factors of Alor Setar nasi kandar is the addition of sweet black beef curry which balances the flavors. If you haven't had nasi kandar, I'd suggest trying Restoran Kudu in Chow Kit, and if you want the Alor Setar variant in KL you can find Nasi Lemak Royale (Mamak palate), Nasi Lemak Ong (Chinese palate), or Nasi Lan Kedah (Malay palate). If you see anything weird displayed, just ask them because they'd have sides that you don't see at other restaurants. Personally I can't eat nasi kandar without squid eggs ("telur sotong") usually cooked in turmeric. 😂

Go try nasi lemak at Nasi Lemak Burung Hantu at TTDI (Taman Tun Dr Ismail). I am Malaysian but Wanjo nasi lemak no longer fits my taste - too sweet! Everything at Wanjo is too sweet - the sambal, the rendang, the curry etc. That is not how you make nasi lemak side dishes. These dishes should have a balanced sweet, sour, salty & spicy taste. Nasi Lemak Burung Hantu is better, with balancing tastes for the side dishes..

Nasi lemak originally has coconut rice, sambal, boiled egg, and ground nuts. Sometimes cucumber. While the rest are extras. Sambal nasi lemak mainly divided by two type. One is salty and the other is sweet. Salty from the amount anchovies and sweet is from the gula melaka(local brown sugar). But every house and region has their own recipe. Even the rice has preference. Some rice style is just so much better eaten hot. Some folded in banana leaf which will soak the aroma while it cools down.

Guys… Wanjoe is severely overrated! The reality is that most places (not all) that have nasi lemak do it well… but they all have their own special dishes that accompany the nasi lema. The key is the sambal.. some make it tastier than others… some are just all out spicy but less tasty.. In fact there’s at least 2 different kinds of nasi lemak- 1) traditional Malay 2) Chinese style (less spicy typically and slightly different taste) . I know a place that beats Wanjoe in terms of flavour.. just message me if you’d like to know more… hehe
